He wrote it in studio. Julian Lennon came in the studio with a friend who just turned 21. The friend told Billy" You guys had it easier than we do now." And then Billy wrote this right then and there as a response. LOVE Billy Joel. This song was always played by my teacher in the 6th grade. This song and the fall of the Berlin Wall always went together for me. I think of one and hear/remember the other.

Wikipedia at least claims that it was a friend of John Lennon's other son, Sean Lennon, who lamented how bad it was to be a 21 year old at that time. Joel then started asking this friend of Sean's if he had heard about various things that went on when Joel was 21 years old. And that's how the song began to take form.

Just The Way You Are. One of the most beautiful songs ever. And my wedding song ❤️

Yes, a lot of historical headlines in the span of 4 decades I think. Glad you gave it a reaction and you had the same reaction everyone else had when we first heard it! Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing more of your video reactions!

I actually like when you pause the videos. I already know the songs and enjoy seeing your reaction to a certain line, verse or maybe an instrumental solo. Stay safe. Stay happy.

Oh my gosh, Jamel, you got me thinking how old I am, and wondering how young you are. But you did say you remember some of this stuff. I remember too much of it, and can only despair at history repeating itself, often literally on fire. If you've ever watched one of Billy Joel's master classes, you would appreciate even more his astounding musicality.

One of the ongoing memes this year has been trying to write the 2020 verse of "We Didn't Start the Fire." Twitter is full of them.

How about the whole last 3 decades? Desert Storm, Grunge rock, Lewinsky, Y2K, social networks, 9/11, #MeToo, Covid-19, BLM... ...just for starters.

Wow I never noticed that Psycho music in the background. Jamel you always notice every detail in the music. I'm amazed at the new things I've discovered from you watching your reactions that I never paid attention to before.

This song moved my son when he was young. He identified with the chorus. I was amused, since it references so much that happened throughout my life, not his. So it was a bonding experience.

"We didn't start the fire, it's still been burnin' since the world's been turnin'. And it will still go on & on & on." For everyone who thinks the current state of the planet is something new and disastrous, should REALLY listen to this song! The topics sung are for JUST the 20th Century. As I keep quoting, "if we don't learn from history, then we are doomed to repeat it." And repeat, repeat, and repeat. Billy Joel slapped us all in the face with this one by saying "WAKE UP". Man I love Billy Joel!

Billy Joel wrote this when he turned forty- and he thought about what had happened in his life?

Some younger fan gave him crap about his generation doing nothing, so he wrote this as a response

Not really. The idea was sparked when he met Sean Lennon and during their conversation Sean said "nothing happened in the 50's." Billy Joel replied back "Wait a minute, didn't you hear of the Korean War or the Suez Canal Crisis?"

This song is so addicting. I love the history lesson it gives and how we can walk through the first 40 years of Billy Joel's life in about 4 minutes.
