This was like the Winwood/Traffic offering from Australia. As A Brit I can honestly say Thorpe sings every bit as well as Daltrey, Steve Marriott or Greg Lake. The world in the late-60's/early 70's simply wasn't ready for music like this from down under competing with the U.S./UK artists. What a conniving shame. As much as I love the early Bee Gees stuff. There simply is no comparison to the soulfulness and thorough musicality of what Thorpe was doing then.

It's just amazing to me that Billy wasn't a huge word star, his vocals and guitar skills were supreme.

Billy really shows his vocal powers here How basic were the shows back then with the cramped conditions The roadies did a great job That Melbourne town hall organ made a statement Billy at his best in 71

Talent like this is rarely seen these days, such a shame he was so unacknowledged by the rest of the world. RIP Billy.

I knew Billy back in the late 60s and early 70s when I used to hang around with Jerry Humphrys and Claire. I remember the time Billy took me home when I got dead drunk at Q Club and the sad day that someone stoile Lobby Loyde's Gibson guitar 'George'. I have Mama on the Live from the Melbourne Town Hall LP, the last album I bought two days before leaving Oz forever. I was there on the stage behind one of the speaker boxes making sure that those large plastic balloons kept inflated.

Loved Billy, never missed a gig in Sydney. Loved Jerry too, what a voice! Good times back then. I was at the Sydney Town Hall gig a week after this was filmed. Poor Pig wasn't allowed to play the Organ in Sydney, due to blowing the windows out in Melbourne at this gig. 😅 I so wanted to hear Pig play that organ too.

My favourite Aztecs song and one of the greatest rock vocals of all time IMHO. Sends shivers down my spine, every time I hear it and the opening feedback note from Billy's Les Paul on Time To Live is magic. RIP Billy.

Took my girlfriend to the concert, recall everyone standing on the seats causing a bit of damage. Great, great concert with multiple Aussie bands including Daddy Cool etc. Got on the tram outside and couldn't hear anything at all except a ringing in my ears for 2 days! Loudest concert I can remember. The AZTECS were at their peak at this time in my view. What a concert! What an experience then for, and now from my youth! What a memory to take to my grave! Real music...

Should be Australia's National Anthem. His voice is a killer. His hair in platts is crazy. The guitar weeps like a child. The guy is the epitome of what is a real Australian. Such power.

Best version of Time To Live. Bought The Dawn Song single just to get Time To Live. Of course got the Live At Melbourne Town hall a bit later. Killer song. Amazing harmonics in this version. Saw Aztecs as much as I could from around '74 to '76. Volume! Long Live Rock N Roll!

Billy Thorpe bassist , he’s legendary he set the bench mark for the idea of the bass player I am gonna be one day ... I play guitar I have always loved to see him playing his Fender Jazz Bass head banging his head on the beat ... that’s a legendary band indeed , great influence on me for sure and great influence in the Australian Rock’n’Roll that came after Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs , he did well in USA as well with his film work . When I hear a band that gives goosebumps on my legs and back I know they are something else .

I think you speak of John Robinson:, and there is a strong resemblance to Paul Wheeler, who I believe is playing bass here. Curiously there was also a later different Paul Wheeler played for Blackfeather, but he was a drummer. Thorpie had many fine bass players, not the least of whom is Gil Matthews (rat) who is playing drums here.

Now this is much better music from Thorpie and the boys. On 'Somebody Left Me Crying', Warren Morgan was able to utilize Melbourne Town Hall's pipe organ. Brilliant.

I've got the triple CD 'Lock Up Your Mothers" set with this on it. Don't think I've ever seen this video before, Pig Morgan's bum organ notes are edited out and it's a shorter version of Somebody. I met Billy about 10 years ago and told him this was my favourite Aztecs song and he was surprised, he expected me to say Most People I Know... RIP Billy, you were amazing.
