From Steve Morris article If we have to add weight, we don’t simply add on metal or weld pieces on - that’s a lower-end way of doing things. What we always do is we simulate what weight needs to be added to the crank using a bolt at first.” When adding weight to the crankshaft, you use what is called mallory metal, which is quite a bit heavier than the steel of the counterweights. When adding mallory, you should always press it into the side of the crankshaft counterweight rather than the top.  “Pressing it into the side makes it impossible for any weight to come out as the crankshaft is rotating around,” Morris says. “If someone were to weld mallory into a hole on the top of the counterweight, a lot times what can happen is it can fly off the crank and shoot through your oil pan, causing oil to drain onto the track and likely sending you into the wall. That’s why if you need to add weight, we always add mallory metal into the side. We even add a little bit of weld to ensure that it will never slide back and forth.”

A lot of the old school guys I hang out with complain about all the no-prep racers, but let me say I have never seen more stand-up people than your family and now Mr. BeaterBomb has gained a new fan as well. You will bounce back better.

Seeing this was heartbreaking, yet it was also one of the nicest moments I have seen . When Joey aka ( Beater Bomb) came to commiserate Billy not only did he just say how bad he felt about the crash but he provided us with yet another demonstration of how humble that man is by him handing Billy his winnings. This shows us all that there's some absolute giants in the racing game of which he is outstanding in his moral compass others need to take note of Joey. Hopefully Billy will be back real soon providing us fankids old and young with much more entertainment keep kicking huge goals guys much respect to all the SRC critters .

Billy I've been racing for a long time and I sent this video to my old engine builder and he said that no engine builder worth their salt would never balance a crank like that and it's criminal because that could have turned out bad for you. I'm glade your ok.

That is why you TIG weld in the Mallory metal, instead of pressing it in. Balanced a lot of cranks and always welded them in, fail safe.

I've been building racings motors for more than 30 years. When I balance a crank, put Mallory in it, I always tig weld them in on both sides, so this does not happen, in short you need to find a new engine builder.

The counter weight problem could have been avoided by some welding by the engine builder. They obviously didn't do a quality check before building the engine

Glad you didn't get hurt Billy! Mallory flying off of crankshafts has been a problem for years with folks that don't know how to properly install it. Kind of knew something was fishy when the car was running after the crash and it still sounded good. I wonder if you could find a reputable frame shop and get a base line check for the car. They could pull the horns back in shape. Can't wait to see that Nova back, its one bad Hot rod. You both need to get some roll bar padding in your cars! Hans device or a horse collar. And get those seatbelts pulled tight....Tommy was pretty loose in that seat! We can replace racecars...... ❤

I was thinking what the hell when you said it blew up because I've seen endless numbers of engines blown on a dragstrip and there is always massive engine noise or the engine is locked up, and the Nova had none of that, It sounded fine the entire time, and then you shut it down. So seeing what really happened made better sense. What a massive screw-up! So glad that whatever Beater Bomb did happened because at that point y'all would have most likely been side by side and that wouldn't have been good! Glad nobody was hurt due to whoever screwed up balancing that crank.

Amazing Video! I spent 5 years building my 69 nova, I always worried about wrecking it at the track. It was a sbc nitrous car. I recently sold it. I’m living my dream thru your family now. Keep on racing, never give up!

For the highest performance engines have the Mallory put into the side. Or have the crank lathe balanced, much more precise, and you won't have to worry about crank Mallory issues.
