The Mk1 Fiesta 1.1 Ghia at 5:22 looks superb, the paint and chrome is gleaming, and the person who scrapped it should feel ashamed of himself, especially if he took the scrapage scheme bribe. It has a Ziebart sticker on the back window which explains the lack of rust, for all the good it did it now.

Those figures will be well off, Scrapyards were notorious for for not sending logbooks to the DVLA when cars were scrapped, Some of the cars I've scrapped are still listed on the DVLA websites. One of them was scrapped over 25 years ago (CVC 739Y silver 1.5 Talbot Alpine) and lay in the scrapyard for months with doors and windows missing.

I'm surprised there were as many as 27 original Datsun Cherries left in the UK in 2015. They were very decent little cars, but they could teach Italian cars a lot about going rotten. I started my career off working for a FIAT main dealer back in '89 and one of our local customers, carried over through multiple changes of franchise, had an early Cherry. It came in one day for its annual MoT and service (it was their town runaround so it did very few miles) we put it on the lift to get stuck in, the body shell went up and left the engine, gearbox and front and rear sub-frames on the ground. It didn't pass, and they bought a new FIAT Uno Formula to replace it. I expect that's long gone to the great scrap yard in the sky now too, though there's no shame in that, the pushrod poverty model Uno was truly horrible, both to drive and to work on, compared to the FIRE-engine models and the larger engines which started off life in the early '60s...

I don't know why, but i have always been curious to live in the 60s/70s/80s/90s. I was born late 90s, but life seemed much simpler and worry free in the early days. And i love old cars! I've owned 3 and my newest was 1990. To see old cars get scrapped i hate that.
@moyadapne9686 жыл бұрын
Tim, don't be deceived, the 'old' days were crap. Parents ruled, and had not much money to spend on you. Then, no portable phones, no cell phones, no internet, crappy TV, $2,500 for a video player, $25 for a tape. Crappy slow unreliable cars. (See above.) Then fuel shortages, service stations closed in the weekends, and 25% interest rates to buy a house. I lived through those times, and all I miss now is my youth, and my twenties/thirties. I spent more on gas in my Dodge in 1975 than I do today. ($40 per week.) My first computer cost $5,500 in 1996. 4GB. Too slow for video games. First printer cost $,1850, when my wages were $450 week. Still, the parties were good fun.
@triptechable6 жыл бұрын
The old days were more simple. No mobiles. No internet. Basic home computers. None of this gender fluid rubbish either lol Parents didn't have much money but enough to get us by. RIP dads capri and cortina. Fond memories. It was great growing up in the and 80s. People seemed a lot tougher then than now.
@Slim_Tim6 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you both, nowadays life is much easier. Although in the old days things were more simple, for example you would go to friends instead of texting them, Of course texting is an easy way to stay in contact, but these days everyone is on their phone instead of talking to each other. But anyway yeah some things are better now and some things were better then. And you shouldn't be living in the past.

That was a quick stroll down memory lane- thanks for the video. I had 2 Capris- both 1.6l GLs , so not exactly tarmac-rippers but I loved them- I'd have another if I had somewhere to keep it garaged. I had a Commer van (Post Office Telephones) and it got stuck in 1 inch of snow on level ground! ! had to get my (14 stone) colleague to stand on the back step and bounce up and down to get it off the driveway. Trouble was- he drove one as well and he was stuck in the same drive, so I had to return the favour (I was 9 stone, wet through!) Ah yes, the good old days. Now where did I put my rose-tinted spectacles....?

It is striking that I have a relationship with quite some cars in this video even though I'm not British! - Just before I passed my licence I was offered a Marina in beautiful marine blue and not too bad a condition, the price would have been ok but at the time I didn't have the space, tools and knowledge to fix her up, but I could still kick my own butt for letting her go. - My mom had a Cherry in bright yellow as her first car and I can still barely remember her as a very little boy. - My godfather had a Viva as his first car, he wasn't very lucky with her as she broke down a lot. I can't remember this car but I have seen her in photos. - I know a chap who restored a Dolomite Sprint just lately, it took him much longer than expected because just about everything that could go wrong went wrong. - When I was a language student in Cambridge I passed a purple Allegro every day on my way to school that was in pretty bad nick and had obviously been abandoned at the roadside. - My host mother there had an Orion. - My parents had a BX Break for about ten years and I learnt driving in her. I still think the road holding was second to no other car that size I've driven. - After I passed my amateur radio licence I got to know a chap thanks to whom I gained a foothold in the ham community and he had four Senators in a row of which I knew - and was given the occasional lift in - three. - My brother once was a Capri nut and still owns two, one of which a rare Turbo May. - Same brother once owned a 5, it was unbelievable how at some point all 5s have just vanished overnight. - My godfather had a Talbot, and I think it was a Sunbeam, after the Viva, and this one I remember. - I once owned a XR3i myself but unfortunately it was a bottomless pit in relation to the means I had at the time so was never able to finish her to roadworthiness. I like youngtimers but even me hasn't been able to keep most of the cars I would have liked to. Give me a huge barn and that will change from that moment on.

Was the scrappage scheme really worth it? If I recall correctly, on an old episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson said that it would actually cost less in the long run to keep an old car running rather than to scrap it and build a new one from scratch to replace it. Was it more to do with emissions or something?
@andrewhaines86033 жыл бұрын
No. It was a complete con by the government to supposedly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being produced by older cars by taking them off the road. Instead it's increased the toxins in the air being spewed out by all the diesel vehicles that people were made to believe were greener than petrol vehicles. I couldn't afford a new car even with the scrappage scheme so I'm currently running a 2005 car and will have to try and keep it going for at least a couple more years. I'd buy another once this has become uneconomic to repair, but I'm not going to be forced into buying something I can't afford! We've lost so many decent cars through this scheme and there are videos on KZfaq where people have visited sites full of the cars that were traded in.

I'm running a 1960 car, a 1981 car and a 2004 car. I'm afraid modern cars hold no interest for me. They are overly complicated and characterless. They do seem to be a bit more rust resistant though.

The problem with most if not all the cars in this list is they were built in a time before modern rust prebention. My dad got a brand new triumph 1500 front wheel drive in 1972 within 12 months it had started to rust. Dad's cousin baugt a 3.5 rover SD 1 Vanden Plas that started to rust after 8 months. My mate's dad had a Datson 180 after a year and a half the bottom 8 or so inches had roted completely away the Japanese made very reliable cars but like everyone else they had shit rust protection. One last thing the Lads became scarce when they were being snapped up by russians and were shipped home for eather use or spare parts. There was an artical on a news program showing hundreds of Ladas on the docks wating to be shipped home..
@garethifan10346 жыл бұрын
Same with a MK V Cortina my dad bought new in March 1981, failed its first MOT due to corrosion of chassis box sections..truly shocking! I had the car 3 years later and had to virtually rebuild the whole of the floor and chassis on it, even then it was off the road in approx 10 years. Now, cars hardly seem to rust at all..
@conkeroonee6 жыл бұрын
All new cars from the 1970s and 80s rotted. If your car lasted 10 years you were doing well. I had various Fiats and Fords and they all crumbled away. Every other weekend it was out with the car filler and spray paint, or replacing water pump or alternators etc.or fixing whatever went wrong. That's why old Cortinas and Escorts are worth so much now, they will have been rebuilt at huge cost, or be rare barn-finds. Engines were usually reliable though, if you changed the oil and filter every 6 months.
@markrl756 жыл бұрын
Yes modern cars have massively improved as regards corrosion however death now occurs due to some supremely expensive electronic module failing whose replacement would cost far more then the value of the car. You see surprisingly late models with no rust sitting in the dismantlers. Anything with a DSG or Powershift gearbox has got one foot in the grave the second the manufacturers warranty expires.
@MrSupercar556 жыл бұрын
Modern cars aren't much better with rust. Some of them, such as the Mazda MX -5 Mk2, have double skinned chassis components to improve safety if you have an accident. The downside is that over time, these trap moisture in, and this leads to chassis rust.

A year or two ago a well conserved FSO Polonez with vinyl roof was scrapped in UK... Only five existing cars of this version are known to be survived up to this day. Excellent reliable cars and I know other friends and family that owned Allegros and think the same. The SD1 was my favourite car when I was a kid. I hade a paper round for the local newsagent and he brought a brand new V8's, the green one with gold wheels, remember that one. Wow it was lovely. In around 1997 I got my first one. Found an ad in Loot magazine. Went to see the car at a private block of flats in a really swanky part of London. Met the lady and turned out the car was her husbands who had passed away. He was a pilot for BA. Went to see the car in the basement garage, and wow, time warp. Immaculate SD1 V8 Vitesse. Cant remember the mileage but it was nothing. Looked like it had just come off the line. I loved that car but in truth I couldn't afford to run it. Just to thirsty.

Busyboy 42 wow, forgot about the gold rim variant. Think that was officially classed as V8-S. I always remember getting depressed years later when u would see a vitesse badge on a Rover 200! 😅

In the february edition of Practical Performance Car magazine they mention a twin plenum Vitesse for sale in the Rover SD1 Club's magazine being up for sale at £21,000. It's a concours winning car with over 100,000 miles on the clock. They wonder if this means Sd1s are going to skyrocket in price, or 'is someone flying a kite?' They were nice cars back in their day. I had a much modified Mini that could spank the 2.6 SD1s and almost live with the 3.5. I miss my Minis...

I'm shocked too, my late father had a 1982 3500 SE from new in Australia - beautiful car, well made never rusted, only broke down twice. Was in the family for 12 years, they were nice but have long vanished here like all 80's cars.

Great video and so nostalgic. Feel a little guilt about low numbers of bx's left... I killed a fair few Gti's for the 16v engine that fitted straight into my many 205's! My Dimma has a bx lump in it!

sad state of affairs as to the numbers! they have dropped dramatically in the past 20 years! Banger races have a lot to answer for :(

It would be interesting to know how many of each make and model were made in order to contrast with how many remain. Interesting video, thanks for posting!

I was told Lada owners would take there cars to the port of Blyth in Northumberland in the early 90's where they were bought by Russian trawler crews , some were stripped for parts . My brother drive his Skoda to the Czech republic , Czech cops were always stopping it as never made a black with alloy wheels .

Always fancied a Talbot Rancho, virtually all gone now. I had an Orion, A98GLU, 1.6GL, red. One of the best cars I ever had but had the VV carb which was replaced with a webber and was a bit pokey after that.
@asthmaticgeriatric71476 жыл бұрын
Terry Was your orion a red one with a 1.6? Was it untaxed in December 1999? Coz DVLA gave these details.
