Billy Joel “New York State Of Mind" from Old Grey Whistle Test
Listen to Billy Joel: billyjoel.lnk....
Shortly after Billy Joel earned his first U.K. Top 40 hit with “Just The Way You Are,” he and his band travelled to England for an electrifying performance recorded for the hit BBC series The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ahead of his first headlining show in the country, Billy performed all the hits from The Stranger plus additional classics from his repertoire.

Lyrics:
Some folks like to get away,
Take a holiday from the neighborhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood
But I'm takin' a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
I'm in a New York state of mind
I've seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines
Been high in the Rockys under the evergreens
I know what I'm needin', and I don't want to waste more time
I'm in a New York state of mind
It was so easy livin' day by day
Out of touch with the rhythym and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, the Daily News
It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons
I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
Oh yeah
It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythym and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, the Daily News
Who, oh, oh whoa who
It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons
I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
I'm just taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
Cause I'm in a, I'm in a New York state of mind

I took my two sons to your concert in St. Louis back in the 80’s. I wanted them to experience a true musical artist, not just noise. After your concert, my oldest son was so excited he couldn’t sleep that night. They couldn’t stop talking about the concert. We went again to several years later when you were back in St. Louis. Thanks for all the great times.

Lifelong fan, as I'm in my last year of cancer, I'll share a moment of serendipity (google it). Took a bus tour to NYC on Gray Coach (Apr20-23/84) when I was 16. Awesome. At tour's end, our Greyhound bus was travelling up the Hudson river line as Manhattan was lit up like Paris. I was listening to my walkman when the radio played this song. An absolute highlight of my life and one I haven't shared til now (who would believe me?). Thank you, Mr Joel, for one of those moments of life that make life worth living.

Another thing about Billy that I admire, besides his unbelievable genius, is that he is a shining example of determination and motivation and confidence. What’s oftentimes more important than a college degree, or even a high school diploma, is simply going all out for whatever interest you have. For him to quit high school to follow his dream of playing music…..not knowing what degree of success lay ahead….gives me goosebumps! Doing what he loves…… what he has a passion for…. is something most people never achieve.

I was never a big Billy Joel fan back in the 70s. But this seriously impressed me. He's a better piano player than I remembered. Like, a serious player. It's funny when he really goes full on Ray Charles with his voice. I think it was his good friend Paul Simon who once said that Billy could imitate anyone, which could be a detriment because it made it harder for his natural voice to come out.

@@MrYoYoBoBoChaddyInsaneZhangII Amen. They're a godsend for finding and watching talent that is not yet well known. I also recommend the website "Song Exploder" for same, plus they get interviewed about how they built the featured song. There are some old songs and a focus on movie and TV themes that is also appealing, but mainly, it's acts with a growing following that are not yet big.

His one-handed runs at 4:30 to 5:00 are the reason I learnt to play piano. This classic OGWT episode is worthy of a release and one of the best gigs I have ever witnessed. His band were completely in sync and honed after a solid European tour. Probably the most capable that Billy ever was - just entered his peak period. Still had that elastic voice capable of hitting any notes.

Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" is an incredible masterpiece that showcases his exceptional talent as a musician, singer, and songwriter. The way he effortlessly blends soulful vocals with his piano skills is truly a gift from above. At my 32 years of age, I can attest that there's no one more original and iconic than Billy Joel. Even though I'm not from New York, this song, especially the sax solo, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Billy's music is like its own genre, and it's something we all cherish. His songs have the power to transport you to a time and place, a true testament to his amazing artistry. Long live the legend, Billy Joel! 🎹🗽🎵🔥

This is the definitive version of this song for me. He does piano riffs and licks here that I haven't seen in any other live video of NYSOM, be it from this era ('78-80) or modern performance. Love his Ray Charles vocal inflection too, it's perfect here. And Richie nails the solo here compared to the Live at Carnegie Hall performance.

I can almost breath in and exist in that time period right now. A sunny day in the fall, a cool night in the big city, a jack and coke, my solid state stereo system with tower speakers, I think I'm there man, no LCD screens, a weak TV signal on my new 24" TV, waiting for the right time to call my favorite girl, checking the phone to make sure it's on the hook, thinking about the next track to play on my turntable, just got the best diamond needle for it. I might even make a song list for a new cassette recording. I'll just grab my leather jacket, splash some Jovan Musk, grab a few quarters in case I decide to make a call, get in my metal car and head out, check out the scene, lower the windows and take in the night. Digital distraction free. All me and the world around me. Get back home in time for the Tonight Show and a TV Dinner.
