On June 25, 2016 a collection of trail and ultra runners toed the line at the historic Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run running from Squaw Valley to Auburn. Among the 350+ were 4 women vying for the win and a coveted top 10 finish which is recognized annually at this prestigious event:
Magdalena Boulet, a HOKA ONE ONE and GU ENERGY LABS athlete is the returning champion and a mother of one who lives and trains in the East Bay of Northern California. She has an incredible road background including earning a trip to the Olympics in 2008 by placing 2nd at the Olympic Trials. (www.magdaboule... | @RunBoulet)
Devon Yanko is also a HOKA ONE ONE athlete and has excelled in many different ultra distances. This is her 2nd attempt at the Western States 100 Mile Race with her 1st resulting in a DNF, or Did Not Finish. She is the co-owner of MH Bread & Butter in San Anselmo, CA along with her husband Nathan. (www.devonyanko.... | @fast_foodie)
Kaci Lickteig placed 2nd in the 2015 running of the Western States 100 is among the favorites to win it. She hails from Omaha, Nebraska where she works as an in-patient physical therapist. (pixieninjarunni... | @ultrarunnerkc)
Anna Mae Flynn of Lake Tahoe, CA is going for her 1st 100 mile attempt after gaining entry via a golden ticket slot at the Lake Sonoma 50 Mile Race in 2016. She is a teacher and a recent ultra athlete. ( / flynnannamae | @annamaeflynn on Instagram, @amflynnrunner on Twitter)
This is a story of their 100 mile journey of which the great Ann Trason compares to living a "life in a day".

I first watched this film about 7 years ago, trying to rebuild myself after cancer. Last weekend, I completed my first 100 miler, at the age of 60. I won my age group (as the only 60 year old woman to finish!). I thought it would be fitting to rewatch 'Life in a Day' to bring the circle together. Doing so, with a lump in my throat, I realise how important was the telling of each story, and how each woman's achievements and paths before and after honour the sport, and the matter of being human. Thank you.

I love that this film wasn't tagged as 'female runners' or the 'women of western states' because... 1) it was an awesome surprise and 2) It supports the idea that it is simply a film about awesome runners. Thanks so much Billy

My gf and I just completed this endurance hike a few days ago. We did it in 5 days carrying 30-45 lbs. We don’t understand how this run is possible in 24 hours. We were in a lot of pain and felt like we were hustling. We hiked all day every day and set up camp in the dark. It is simply incredible that humans are able to run this so quickly. It is hard to tell on film how gnarly the elevation gains are and even worse, the descents. Mad props to these runners!

Everyone who finishes 100 miles in 30 hours is a courageous athlete, not just for the race, but for all the thousands of training miles that came before. However to me, a man, there is something especially heroic about these women. This is a great film, and instantly one of my favorites.

I haven’t been moved by a film in a long time. As a resident of Auburn I only recently started running- I grew up horseback riding and never liked running. For whatever wild reason, I decided to start doing this thing I’ve always told myself I couldn’t do. I work in mental health and running does wonders. Thank you for this film and more importantly for awesome women who do it. ❤

SPOILERS. While each of these women are awe-inspiring, special props to Devon Yanko: dealt with the no-show by her crew at the first aid station, then powered through the pain and doubt to finish in third place. Plus there are the difficulties she's overcome in her life to get to the start line. Huge respect.

I'm not sure if considered rude to comment on a video that is over a year old but, horses do still run this race every year. The AERC hosts it. That is how I got into trail running. At 19, I didn't feel it was in my horse's best interest to keep pushing long trail rides (he's still happily being a pet and trotting around on trails for fun if anyone is curious) and I kept seeing videos about these incredible people doing the same distances. You can't watch this and not be impacted! I had no desire to build the bond and training with another horse so, I run. And I love it. Maybe one day, since I won't get to go down that trail with my horse, I'll make it on my feet.

This film is powerful. A story about more than the top finishing women at the 2016 Western States. Running is the vehicle but the spirit of the women in this film is truly inspiring. This is a film about determination, battling demons and finding joy while pushing one's body to the limits. This 100 mile race is not just physically immense but a spiritual journey of epic proportions and Billy Yang captures the essence of the race and the runners in a way that moves your heart.

People at their most vulnerable after grinding themselves down to nothing then finding out they have a lot more inside! You find who you are, I’ve been at that point after races and I find out something new every time I finish it’s the most beautiful and painful experience but you come out the other side better for it.

Can anyone believe this has gotten 15 thumbs down? What's wrong with people? Finally, a beautifully-done film about the top female field in ultrarunning, at WS no less. Bravo. It made me want to jump out of bed at 1am and drive up to squaw to finally run on the trails up there.. Will be re-watching this a good handful of times this week. Lovely work Billy!
