Even without IR, that piano sounds so gorgeous. Especially hearing it binaurally from the players position. I wish all piano recordings could make me feel like I’m in the seat like that.

That's very interesting. I get so many differing preferences on imaging. For pure spatial recording, it seems having the microphone beside the piano is best. But yes, as a pianist, it is quite special to have the microphone in the players position.

Wonderful sound as usual! I'm a big fan of reverb to dampen the dryness. Your playing is so wonderful, and I just can't say enough about your microphone. In fact, you scared the hell out of me at the end as I thought it was over. then you spoke and I actually looked over my right shoulder. Amazing!!

Really good to hear your comments. Since much of this recording is experimental, your feedback helps me acquire the confidence to continue investing time and money into this process. Listen carefully, the conventional near-field microphoned version of the piano is actually more realistic sounding than the version with binaurally microphoned room reverberation added to the near-field microphoned track. The reason for this is that the reverb component is much higher than what would be normally heard in most listening environments. Reduce it by about 6db and you will confirm that the overall near-field to far-field balance will be more realistic. Having said that, the near-field microphoned version sounds remarkably good, I assume by virtue of careful mic placements.

This piano recording sounds amazing. What a pleasure. I guess turing back can not be a best idea, you can grab more from your room and limit the fr in some freq. But test and see how this sounds.

***** It seems the main wish for turning away is to keep the low notes on the left. But actually, NOT turning away is how the audience is intended to hear a piano. So I think I"ll pass on that... and also for the reasons you mention. :)

Matthew Lien BTW, I played your recording on my home loudspeakers system and although I have not adopted my room, nor I have a best sounding system in the word, spacing is very well noticable and located in proper places. Headphones are really not that necessary.

Great job and demonstration of the process! One question though - is this result of editing or something technical or was the sweep really divided in two parts @ 03:02 - 03:03? Why not a continuous one from low end to high? Thanks!
@MatthewLienMusic
@MatthewLienMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. It is in fact, one continuous tone from low to high. I edited it for length. There is a tone "blip" which you hear at the end, which contains data the software uses regarding the sample and bit rates, and the length of the tone. The tones are create by Audio Ease for Altiverb. There is another demonstration on more spaces if you search for "Matthew Lien Audio Reality".

From 4:50 to 5:10 did you have binaural mic + impulse response or just binaural microphone? Because the 3d effect was amazing. Thought you were sitting next to me.
@MatthewLienMusic
@MatthewLienMusic 7 жыл бұрын
4:50 to 5:10 is the binaural microphone only (dry), no added impulse response reverb. Cool, right? It's super-realistic, although the dry effect does not often lend itself well to music production.

Some years ago I had same idea but don't has resources. My idea was a bit different (and in my opinion more interesting). Don't know if you know holophinics, it is some steps forward than binaural, you can search on youtube for holophinic Barber Shop to have an example, it is a technology designed by a crazy South American guy on 70 or 80s and it was used to record a Pink Floyd disk... Well his history is another theme. I wanted to record an Impulse with this holophinic microphone on a control room recording studio and some clubs, cinema, etc. And use these impulses to simulate room acoustics for mixing/post production porpoises when using headphones. It is very important to know how will sound the song you are mixing in different environments. And have the opportunity to listen as if you are in a club/cinema/studio but being in your home it is an incredible thing! So maybe you can do it, I think no company offers that Greetings!

this is so cool! i have a question - can IRs that were recorded binaurally be applied to music that was not recorded binaurally?
@MatthewLienMusic

Thanks for the comment. Yes, binaural impulse responses sound extra spacious compared to typical reverb, even on non-binural recordings.

Matthew Lien But would it be real-time? Or does it take some time to apply the impulse response?
@gurdermoller
@gurdermoller 8 жыл бұрын
+DaveK183 Long reverbs = long impulse responses = long convolutions that has to be applied in real time. It will be very demanding to do in real time but todays computers are so powerful it should be doable
@DaveK183
@DaveK183 8 жыл бұрын
Sigurd Møller Yeah, but the games themselfs are already demanding you know. I think that for example Battlefield already uses some kind of ''echo sample''. Just look at the map metro in Battlefield 3. It really just sounds like they let explode a grenade in that environment. (sorry for my english)
@gurdermoller
@gurdermoller 8 жыл бұрын
without knowing about game sound processing I doubt that long echo/reverb effects are computed in real time. There would not be any need to compute that in real time because it could proberly be computed before that happens.

Hi, one important question: does the IR softare that you used to capture the reverb support the binaural microphone and stereo imaging? does it support stereo mics? could you tell what software did you use? before this video I was familiar with ir recording with just one mic. I have used IR for many years but this is totally new! thanks a lot
@MatthewLienMusic
@MatthewLienMusic 7 жыл бұрын
I am using Altiverb. It supports stereo IR recording, which is all that is needed for binaural IR recording.
@jasonrasquinha3245
@jasonrasquinha3245 7 жыл бұрын
Hi! Wouldn't shoulder/torso reflections account for some influence on the impulse response recorded at the ear mics thus improving the captured response?
@MatthewLienMusic
@MatthewLienMusic 7 жыл бұрын
It has been said that upper body structure is helpful, as well as hair. But my testing, for example, with the Kemar system complete with upper body, I found less pleasing results than working purely with the KU-100. But I encourage you to experiment, as well.

What does the impulse response sound like on the stereo pair dpa mics? And what does the stereo reverb sound like on the binaural mic signal?
@MatthewLienMusic
@MatthewLienMusic 8 жыл бұрын
+noreaction Binaural IR reverb on normal stereo material is not my interest and so is not tested, but I have found that normal reverbs cause binaural recordings to collapse in on the listener the way typical stereo music does.

What about creating a plugin that can be used by sound engineers through their favorites Audio Software?
@MatthewLienMusic
@MatthewLienMusic 9 жыл бұрын
Well, I am actually using Altiverb for this. After I record the IR file, I import that into the Altiverb plugin which then creates the convolution reverb, but in a binaural context.

PoundSound Thanks! I was also really pleased with the Digilog IR. I am also finding these binaurally recorded impulses meld extremely well with binaurally recorded pianos. The good quality transferring to speakers is partly the result of this specific Neumann, as unlike other binaural mics, it functions as an excellent stereo mic for typical speaker playback (most of the nature sounds in my new album "Headwaters" were recorded with the KU-100 (www.matthewlien.com/headwaters). I have some new ideas of how to optimize the IR capture to suit the intended stereo imaging of the binaural recording , so hopefully this can become even better. But I agree, great results so far!
