Today I am making a leatherbound spellbook, journal, tome, whatever you want to call it. Here I am using the sewing method that uses cords in the spine to create the awesome looking ridges on the back. The leather is vegetable tanned goatskin, tooled and stained. And of course I had to add some LEDs to the 3D print that decorates the front: Geralt's Medallion! Because this epic tome was inspired by the new series The Witcher, and the game "The Wild Hunt".
All links below marked with * at the front are affiliation links that helps us out and supports the channel. Thanks!

I do leather working, and you are correct. Shape and carve, then stain/dye the leather. If you stained then carved you would get un-dyed leather showing in the lines of the carving. As well, since you need to wet the leather for carving, you would also get colour bleeding.

Who wants more book projects? 🙋🏻‍♀️ I actually really wanna see how far books can be pushed in regards of tools, materials and special effects. Please keep them going! Maybe something from GoT, LotR, the Hobbit, Eragon, Harry potter, Skyrim, Dragon Age, Diablo, (more the Witcher), the legend of Zelda. Just a few which might inspire you ✨

Love your hair. I will say that while you technically "can" dye your leather before carving (I've seen it used to case the leather pre carving) it's generally not the best way and usually makes it more difficult to see your scratch lines for carving. Loved this video

On other channels they seem to be trying so hard to seem professional that it almost makes them seem indifferent and usually you won’t get more than a “I’m really happy about this” and a smile out of them. this is what i think you can do, attach the leather to the spine and then, use the book to mark all you need to know where all is going to be placed, next, open the leather to one side, work on it (carving, tooling...etc), change the side and repeat, last dye the leather as you want and then glue. I am a leather artisan, that is most likely how i would do it. Sorry if my grammar is not good, i am spanish but i did my best to comment this because i like the things you make and want to help you a little with the leather part. i hope you carry on making all this beautiful things, its really relaxing to see how you do it, thanks for all the hard work ^_^

Wow. I haven't looked at any of your bookbuilding projects until now. It brought up memories of Print Shop class in High School in the 1960s (yes, I'm old). Have you looked into "marbling" the edges of your books' pages? It's really easy and looks so cool. Beautiful job. I have a suggestion for your "I don't have three hands" problem. You can buy "third hand" tools, alligator clips on little jointed stands to hold components for soldering but they're rally only good for that one thing. You can also buy surgical instruments like hemostats and Kelly clamps- they're like fine-duty locking pliers (one has smooth jaws, the other has really fine teeth) and they come in different sizes. You clamp the part to be soldered in one of them and another to the first one to hold it up off your work surface. You can use them for lots and lots of things- they are seriously indispensable for craft work.

So, as someone who works with leather, I can tell you that you can indeed dye the leather first then carve/stamp; in fact, you can use the moisture from the dye in place of water to case your leather in preparation for carving/stamping. In the case of carving, your most likely going to have to go over any carved details with a bit of dye just to touch up afterwards. It really just depends on what order of steps you feel most comfortable with and if tooling and dyeing the leather after its on the book is what works best for you then stick with it.

you CAN stain first and then carve ... BUT you will get uneven colouring in the carved portions ... and can get very heavy darker colouring in the compressed areas ... The carving after does make for a nice contrast to the stain ... and is a good highlight for very dark coloured books ... . also ... if you carve after and are applying a fill like gold leaf or silk thread paired with gold and silver threads ... then the fill will cover any miscolouring pretty well ... if you DONT fill in the carved area you can use a q tip or similar applicator (brush) ... and add a light touch of the stain to the carved portions that are showing that you dont want to show ... . think of it like this ... the people who carve pumpkins and use different thicknesses of the actual pumpkin to allow or block more or less light through them ... it is the same idea except the light comes from outside not inside ... so you tend to remove the dark to make the light ... instead of keeping the dark to block the light
