This is the last part of the journey for these quilts. From discovering these unfinished quilts tops in a red suitcase, those my Mum didn't have time to finish before she died, to the backing choices, the trips to Cath The Longer Quilter, (cumbrianlongarmquilting.co.uk) once to take them, once to collect them, and now finally, the bindings are all done. So, it's the end of this journey, but not quite! They have to be delivered to their new homes next!
It has been quite a journey for these seven quilts!
Soon, we will get back to Anna's Quilt, but not for a few weeks, this is going to take a while, Anna works full time and there are always so many things to do!
Thank you for joining me here at The Last Homely House.
I have a little shop where you can find the things I create here in my cottage in Northumberland, plus some treasures from my creative friends.
New in the shop this weekend are the Aprons and Tea Towels I use every day plus some cards from the 2022 calendar images - some corners of my home.
The monthly newsletter will keep you informed of shop updates, the charity donation I make each month with your Ad Revenue, plus the prize draw details where one person on the mailing list will win a gift from the shop. So when you pop over to see the website, be sure to sign up to the mailing list!

I create extra content for my Patrons and you can check that out here. This last week, I dusted off my spinning wheel and had a lovely evening relaxing with some bright yellow fibre!

My cousin recently told me that her mom made a quilt that she never got to finish. My aunt has been gone for 19 years now. I offered to help my cousin finish the quilt so that her kids can have a quilty hug from their grandma.

My dear sister died in 2011 at the age of 68. She left 12 unfinished quilts behind. I finished 5 of them, and her quilting girlfriends finished the rest. Watching this video made me teary, truly a work of love.

After my father passed, there was lumber and different saws he used in wood working. My mother wanted to sell certain pieces and get the lumber out to someone who’d use it. So we found a buyer. A father was setting up a shop for his son. After the oak and cherry planks were loaded, the young man sat beside the lumber and ran his hand across it. I knew then dad was happy! Someone would love this as much as he did. Your mother is smiling🥰 Cheryl

Oh my , your comment about your beloved Mum talking over your shoulder , made me shiver . I had exactly the same after my Mum passed away . I’d watched her for decades when she used to sew daily but never really sewed myself . I inherited her janome machine . I only used it about a year after her loss ,just to make something to pass the time . I opened the carry case and immediately my Mums smell hit me , she had bits of fabric I remembered ,I started to thread the machine , not sure I was doing it correctly , and I heard her , do it like that , don’t do it that way . And when I commenced sewing she urged me on , and still does if I hit something difficult to sew through , Go on Hill she says , and it’s a comfort . hearing you say the same made me tingle and had to comment . How special , she’s on my shoulder urging me on even now , I’m 70 now and love it still . X

This has really gotten to my heart. The love you have put into your Mums quilts are so special and to give to your family. So much love and warmth in these quilts. I just wish I had all your energy for all you do. I have in my mind all these things I want fo do, but my body doesn’t agree with my mind. I’m 81 and in good health except for 3 shoulder surgeries and one was a total shoulder replacement and possible another coming soon. The shoulder and arm keeps me from accomplishing all these things in my mind. This as been a depressing 3 years. This is why I love your Your KZfaq.. you keep me inspired. You made me cry when you talked about your Mum was looking over your shoulder.

Watching this series encouraged me to dig out 11 panels of red work embroidered cats that my late mother stitched for my then toddler daughter 35 years ago. My mom didn't sew so she expected me to do the quilting all along. By the time she had finished the 11th panel, my daughter Emily was born and our lives were turned upside down by her devastating diagnosis and eventual death 2 years later. The 12th panel and the original quilt were never finished. I kept those cats for all these years and this series brought them to life. My mom died in 2019 and the cats became a memory project for me. I felt my mother's presence as I stitched those 11 cats (plus some smaller panels I made for balance) into 2 lap quilts - one for the original intended recipient and the second for her younger sister. Thank you for this series of posts, they spurred me into action and a lovely memory project.

That is a real accomplishment. I also enjoy the quiet, meditative activity of sewing down a binding by hand. I have quilts my great-grandmother made (well, mostly tops). The story is that one Christmas she brought them all out and let her grandchildren choose which one they wanted. After my grandmother passed away - she got the completed crazy quilt - the siblings drew lots for that gem. It has eventually made it's way to me. 😊

Lovely to see these memories completed in one way, and soon starting to make new ones! I just sent 3 to my son, partner and my youngest grandson. Was able to FaceTime to see their reactions as they opened the box and unwrapped them. The baby loved them ALL and quickly made a lovely fort to crawl in. My son is an artist, so was enthralled with my design and freemotion stitching. His partner was sooo happy, since she’s never had a handmade blanket. Great memories!

Stitching the binding is my favorite part of making a quilt. I love to take that time and reflect on what I did right on the quilt, mistakes I made, maybe a new skill or trick I learned during the process. For some reason stitching the binding makes me feel connected to others who have come before me who made quilts and I hope that somehow their skills and knowledge will become part of me as well. I know it sounds corny, but that's how it is for me.

It's a dear task to complete a project for a loved one who has left us behind. My Mam passed away in 1981 and as she was a seamstress and crafter there were several incomplete items that I found and finished myself. Yes! "She's always looking over my shoulder, giving an opinion." I lost my Mom a year and a half ago. She left many, many unfinished quilts. So far I have finished 2, have another 2 almost done, and have donated another top to be finished for a cause my mom supported. I have 2 more that have to be finished for the youngest graduating grandchildren. I always hear my Mom when working on them. I feel so much closer to her then.
