Dixie Lee was born Wilma Winifred Wyatt in Harriman, Tennessee on Novemeber 4, 1909. Her father's name was Evan Wyatt and her mother was Nora Scarborough. After her family moved to Chicago when she was still a teenager she attended and graduated from Senn High Schoool.
When she was in her late teens, she started singing and performing and won a talent contest put on by the city of Chicago. While in college she chose the stage name Dixie Lee and signed a contract with Fox in 1920.
1920 was a big year for her in more ways that one. Not only did she star in several films but that was also the same year that she met her husband-to-be Bing Crosby. Just a year later and they were married. Together they raised four children - all boys.
Unfortunately, between the two of them, only one of their careers was likely to take off. Bing's fame was quickly growing so Lee decided that it was best best for her and her family to stay at home as a homemaker to raise the kids.
Bing Crosby went on to become a superstar, but his work schedule and obligations prevented him from being around his family. While he was away, Dixie Lee drank herself into a stupor while their 4 sons were shipped off to boarding schools. Eventually Dixie contracted cancer and died at the age of 44.

Bing Crosby and Phil Harris used to come to Oxford, Maryland every Fall for hunting season..... For years and years... They rented the same place every year from my friend’s uncle. He said that he looked forward to seeing Phil Harris as he was friendly and always having a good time. My friend’s uncle said Crosby was one of the nastiest, self-centered and demanding individuals he had ever met....

There is a book written by Andy Devine's son. At one time Andy and Bing were close friends and lived either next door or across the street from each other. It's a very good book and you'll find out what Bing Crosby was like.

I heard that he knew his wife was dying, but he chose to go out playing golf. An arrogant and demanding customer to hotels and restaurants, he also threw his weight around in general, being very rude to fans, and yelling at film crew members who he considered beneath him.

@@annemariefleming This is the biggest load of BS I've read. His wife was ill yes....but the doctors informed Bing, who was due to make a movie in France, to go otherwise Dixie would be suspicious of him staying, as they didn't want her to know the longterm bad prognosis or the boys....he sheltered them from Dixie's condition. Dixie wanted him to go and after hesitating for a fair while Bing followed the doctors instructions. He attended and played in a CHARITY golf match that he had agreed to on route. Whilst on set he received word of her turn for the worse and immediately travelled back to her....where she met him after enduring blood transfusions in order to meet the love of her life...that is how much they loved each other....he took her home and carried her across the threshold like a newlywed. He then stayed by her bedside until she passed, but not before placing her original wedding band back on her finger...where a newer more expensive one had replaced the old. Beautiful story.

@@annemariefleming As well I have read he was probably one of the most generous and giving entertainers to his fans, read about his kindnesses to two sisters...his biggest fans, and how he assisted many others who wrote to him. So no I've never heard of him being rude to fans and I've read everything I can about him. And I've also read about his many supporting and kindnesses to people he knew or was acquainted with. Read about him hiring a lovely lady who was a fan after meeting her when she waited at the front gates to paramount. Read her interview about what a great boss and person he was and she worked for his office for something like thirteen years, part of her job being assisting his son Gary....interesting observations. Read about his brother Bob asking a bathroom attendant or shoe shine gentlemen if Bing ever tipped him, his response was he would never accept a tip from Bing as he, Bing, was putting his son through school. And apparently he never raised his voice to either his first wife or kids, and his way of getting a point across on a movie set was to simply leave and go golfing. He did this when he went into bat for his mate Louis Armstrong and I have never read of him berating, raising his voice or muscling anyone on his movie sets. In fact read the stories from kids and leading ladies and costars who say he was a favourite leading man and how nice and polite he treated everyone. So I don't know where you heard those stories from as I've never read anything resembling that.

Where I worked as a care giver, I got a acquainted with the house keeper of the Crosby's. They had a lake house up north that she had to get ready before they arrived. She wasn't fond of the second wife, bc she didn't treat the boys very nice. Sounds like those boys had a tough up bringing. All the way around.

Knowing so much more about human psychology today than we knew in the 1930's-40's, Bing Crosby's personality reflects his cultural/ethnic background. Being Irish/English Catholic, his culture was extremely reserved (even repressed). The fear of showing extreme emotions influenced how children were raised. The fear of showing anger, or expressing love is common in this culture. I speak from experience. The Irish and English are not as emotionally expressive as Italians or Latin cultures, for example. Hopefully this will help your understanding.

My father never told me he loved me. Neither did my mother. It was really a sign of weakness. Dad was always saying you have to take care of yourself and not depend on anyone. Children were seen but not heard. We were never old enough to have an opinion about anything. I never saw either of my parents growing up. It was how family was at that time.

In case you're interested, Bing Crosby's last public performance was the very day that Elvis Presley had passed away. Local news media had stopped by the Concord Pavilion, in Concord, CA., where Bing was rehearsing for an evening performance. When the reporter informed him of the passing of Elvis, it was apparent that he was extremely taken aback, by the sad news, and expressed his condolences to the family of Mr. Presley.

You don’t have to come from an “ Entertainment family” to never be told they love you. I believe it has to be the era that generation grow up it. My dad was born in 1915, my mom in 1922, they had my brother in 1941.... and me in 1953...when I was 13 yrs. old , my mother looked me in the eyes and said “ I never meant to have you!” Live with that, and a mother who never said she loved me. But as an adult I was my parents caregiver from the moment I was born, until their deaths, 2001, 2004.... I took care of all their funeral arrangements, etc.

You come through your parents but you do not "belong" to them. God loves you and you were meant to be. I am sorry for the hurtful words your mother said, but truth be told I bet most babies in those days were not " meant to be had". My father in law one thanksgiving, having had a libation or 3, sat and told my husband he was an "accident" and wasn't supposed to come along, his mom then said " well I meant to have him. A doctors wife in the 60's and not just a doctor but the head of the university department of medicine I. His field, he also traveled to Africa, Japan, Colorado to lecture and go to medical symposiums. I think my mother in law saw herself soon to be an empty nester and decided she did not want to return to nursing and thought, "well I was good at being a mother,...... hum, I wonder" You have your own soul. I don't know when your mom lived but so many people went through tremendous loss during the Spanish flu epidemic, then world war 1 and 2. I hope you nurture yourself and find joy in life every day. She does not define you, you are loved by God, you are precious and unique and one of a kind. Wishing you love and hope and happiness. Kate wrote this

Phillip carried a letter around with him with love dad written on it. And I read that when Bing said goodnight I love you to his youngest son from his first marriage, the boy thought it was heaven. I've also read that even the eldest and most critical son mentioned he could feel the unspoken love from his father. The children from his second marriage also mentioned he wasn't a demonstrative father but they knew that he loved them and they all adored him. So Bing wasn't able to express emotion well but it was obvious he adored all of his kids, as evidenced by the amount of time he spent worrying and assisting his older boys even after they were grown men. Kathryn wrote in her book about his concern about them...she had all the correspondence kept about it.

I agree. I never liked his arrogant attitude , his bub-bub-bub singing style or that he could really act. There is a KZfaq 25 Things about White Christmas... Number 24: After the final shot wrapped, the actors were told that they needed to redo the finale, Rosemary Clooney recalled in the DVD extras. The King and Queen of Greece were visiting the set and the producer hoped to "give them something to remember." So the entire scene was "reshot" - but without film in the camera or Bing Crosby, who had already left to play golf. He had a total of seven children, four with Dixie Lee and three children with Kathryn , Harry, Mary Frances, and Nathaniel together

@@charlesthompson3615 I remember reading that Crosby's first set of children, from his 1st marriage, also could NOT stand him. Lindsey, his youngest son, committed suicide, in 1989, at age 51. Ironically, Jerry Lewis was also accused of being an extremely physically abusive & absent father to his sons from his 1st marriage. Ironically, Lewis's youngest son, also committed suicide. Joseph was only 45, homeless, lived in homeless shelters, ate in "Soup Kitchens" & it was said when he died, he did not have a single penny in either his pockets or to his name. He O.D.ed on 24 Oct 2009, in Utah. Jerry Lewis refused to pay for his son's funeral or to help in any way.. As a matter of fact, in Lewis's Will, he clearly made it plain how he felt about his 1st set of children, "I have intentionally excluded Gary, Ronald, Anthony, Christopher, Scott & Joseph and any of their descendants as beneficiaries of my Estate, it being my intention that they receive NO benefits", and they did NOT !! Shockingly, a woman by the name of Susan, was proven to be his daughter by DNA. She is also homeless & on the streets. This is BEYOND belief, that this p**ck of a man ABSOLUTELY left NOT a cent to ANY of his biological children, yet left his $50 million Estate to his 2nd wife & adopted daughter & 50 million is on the conservative side. BTW, Susan is nearly his twin, even down to his clefted chin. Joseph was said to be his spitting image. My question is: WHY didn't the Media EVER make any of this public ?? It would, hopefully, have shamed this p**ck into helping his biological children. For the record, I ABSOLUTELY could not stand jerry lewis either. I have no desire to be famous or come from a famous family. Good thing because I an not. I can’t understand how people behave like that. My parents were born in 1923 & 1924. My mom’s mother died when she was 18 months old and wound up with a abusive step mother and my dad’s family didn’t show much love. My mom always made sure I knew she loved me, I did the same with our son and our new granddaughter. When I talk to my mom in law I always tell her I love her. My husband’s dad was a preacher, yet didn’t show much love towards him, the middle child and only son. I don’t doubt they loved him, but you need to hear it.

Obviously you didn't read correctly. Mary Crosby spoke about her and her father's relationship openly and honestly but never in tough terms. She spoke about the misinformation that she moved in with her boyfriend straight after Bing's passing and against his wishes. She said it never happened that quickly and despite Bing being strict about living together she thought they would have worked it out because of their great love for one another. She has been a huge vocal supporter of her much loved father.

Sadly, a lot of the men of that generation, like my Grandfather, grew up in tough circumstances- he was one of 10- most of them didn't have much formal education- they were self made, working hard to make a living- no time for sentimental things like love, crying, holding your kids- it was their upbringing- not manly to do all that - "real men" didn't express themselves that way- they provided for their families- that was their form of love- marriage was functional- sex, kids- traditional roles- those men felt"i'm out working, providing for you"- you(wife, kids) should be happy with that- you have a good life"- but as we can see from the videos, there was no love- you can have a lot of money, but is no substitute for being there for your family, and letting them know you love them- and you can see the tragic consequences in these stories, and in our own lives- my family as well- it has nothing to do with fame- it has to do with the people and their issues already there before they became rich and famous

This is just one opinion of Bing. He was also beloved by many people back in his time but it hasnt been talked about here. Back in Bing's time it wasn't totally common to tell your kids you loved them. My Father never, ever told me he loved me which sounds bad but would you think again if you knew that after my husband and I moved to a place miles away he wrote to me regularly. I still have his and my letters together in a photo album. How did I get my letters? After he died and our family got together to sort through his things I found he'd kept every single one of my letters. He was a single parent after Mum died and he raised all four of us. We all have happy memories of our childhood and didn't need him to tell us in words that he loved us. We felt it everyday.

I remember when I was growing up the Bing Crosby Christmas special every year. Other than that, I really never saw his movies. Whenever I saw him on talk shows of that time, I always thought he was somewhat of a jerk. I was never really impressed with him. Now, the only thing I can say that was surprising, was the beautiful home he built in the early 30’s. I would never had thought he would live in such an elegant home. Then to lose it all in a fire. Why didn’t he just rebuild it and continue to live there. Then the awful way he treated his first wife and sons, it all seems such a shame.

I can understand why Gary wrote that tell all. He and his brothers were abused mentally, physically and emotionally, while his dad was made out to be a saint. Living your life under the magnifying glass of Hollywood and never being good enough to please his abuser takes it’s toll. The abuse went well beyond not hearing “I love you,” “I’m proud of you,” etc. Sour grapes? Perhaps. Nightmare childhood? Probably.

Unfortunate that lightly educated young mother Dixie Lee likely had no idea that her alcohol drinking could harm her unborn babies. It seems she inwardly was torn, regretted the stardom she might have had, had she not married and begat four children (sons, no "mini me"s to girl talk to). As Bing's star rose, hers lay in cinders. And his career continually paired him with the era's most glamourous stars, some he had affairs with. So she must have felt chronic deep despair. Bing the hollow man nonempath (about whom there were at least three suicides: two of his sons, and actress Inger Stevens after he refused to marry her) just kept his mood shallow and light, and glided on ... buh buh buh boom.

Sometimes the most creative-and groundbreaking-artists are the most complex and complicated. Bing was low key, intensely private. But he also demanded order and careful planning, a mandate which he extended to his family. In those days, the 40s and 50s, you could lose your career if some personal reached the press. Balancing that with trying to maintain normal household is difficult. Tough as Bing was to his first four sons, they became grown men and were responsible for themselves. Alcohol was a problem, yes. But they also received much financial support from their dad. So come on.

But I was not a fan of his movies though I do have Bing Crosby and Bob Hope road movies which were sort of dumb. My father use to deliver milk to bob hopes house in Toluca Lake back in the very early 1960's but I met Bob Hope at a USO show when I was a wave in the US Navy in 1968. I think Bing was talented but over-rated. I liked perry como better.
