Howl's Moving Castle is one of the many exquisitely animated (and profoundly confusing) expressions of destiny, growth, and love brought to us by Hayao Miyazaki. An even more ubiquitous theme in his films, however, is food. Few can so magically inspire hunger as the sizzling breakfast served up courtesy of Calcifer's demonic flames - can some at-home know-how help us bring the magic into our own kitchens?

For any curious fans: Distilled water is emphasized, not because of impurities and dissolved minerals in regular water, as that won't make too much of a difference, but because of microbials, bacteria, and other things that may be living in the water that a filter may not remove. Meat is being cured and you don't want to get sick from any growth due to water, so a previously boiled water is used, whether it is bought or done at home.

Distilled and boiled water are not the same thing. You can boil water without distilling it and it will still be sterilised, and you can distill water without boiling it (evaporation doesn't require high temperatures). They are two completely separate concepts.

@eyeball226

@Jirro Capillo I can't think of a single summarised source. But it should be fairly common knowledge that water doesn't need to be anywhere near boiling to evaporate. If you need distilled water then it's likely to be because of a lack of dissolved minerals, because if you just need some sterile water you'd be better off boiling it yourself. Bought distilled water is likely to be sterile, but buying distilled water just because you need something sterile is silly.

You ever try Fresh Strawberries with fresh ground Black Pepper? Literally just like that, grind up some pepper into a pile, and dip fresh Strawberries into it as you eat them. I promise, it's amazing. This isn't just some weird thing I came up with, it's a real thing. Trust me, it's mind blowing. Something about these two ingredients just clicks. It tastes like what you would imagine beautiful flowers tasted like as a kid. No salt, _just black pepper, and regular strawberries._
