As late as summer of 1945, the US was still prepared for an all out invasion of Japan. The Operation code name was Downfall. Ultimately, that invasion did not happen!
But what if a similarly ambitious operation was planned today? Could today’s US military force successfully invade Japan, defended by the modern day Japanese military? Watch the video to find out!

Japan didn't surrender as result of Atomic attacks. What were weaker then infamous Tokyo Firestorm caused conventionally. Whole argument was made up to calm guilt when US citizen realized how bad this weapon is. In reality Japan was democratic country, what lost control over military resulting with Junta. When crippled military was distracted, Emperor escaped house arrest exposing treason and majority of anti-war citizens forced surrender. Idea of house wifes fighting with bamboo spears was as false as German Operation Werewolf.

So many comments are not used to the fact that Binkov follows these rules: Morale is rarely a factor, if at all. (E.g. everyone is eager to fight to death) No Nukes (else the battle will be a draw or one-sided) War is sudden unless specified otherwise Real World Allies and Enemies are NEVER going to be involved unless stated otherwise (e.g. they do not care at all) If multiple nations are involved, they are treated as if under the command of a single commander.

I think the first issue is morale is not a factor. In war that is a huge factor. Soldiers will fight to the death to a point. The Russian invasion against Ukraine vs. The Russian invasion of Georgia shows the difference between morale and stalwart defense. That’s very hard to do, and binkov is more of a numbers comparison channel. For example comparing the US military to say China just based off numbers is useless when you take into account training, combat experience, moral, and troop equipment and logistics and force projection. There is a lot to compare and look and there’s a lot of missing information that would be purely speculative. The world thought Russia would conquer Ukraine in weeks but look what happened, even the vast US intelligence network failed to anticipate what really happened

I did a lot of comparisons a few years back, and made my prediction based on old info. Japan has had more forces for a while now, but the overall advantage in operational and training experience is with UK. That said, Japan is set up for self defense, while UK is set up for power projection and expeditions (not as good as US, but better than most). The thing is, there is no SINGLE nation on earth right now that can win a conventional war against a committed US. I understand that's a bold statement, but I think it holds true (and before anyone brings up Afghanistan, the US was never fully committed to winning that.) China would be the only country that could give us a run for our money right now, but eventually their population would starve and we'd win (it'd be VERY costly though.) A Chinese/Russian federation would ultimately end the same as well, because while China would have Russia as a breadbasket, NATO would most likely be involved which would probably lead to a "Russia first" strategy and the war ends the same way, just with Millions more in casualties. NATO as a whole could defeat the US if that scenario ever came to pass, but I don't see that happening unless the US goes "Full Fascist Authoritarian" for a decade or more (think Trump 2.0 with full dictatorial powers.)

Japan is not like Vietnam in that they are not self sufficient. They import almost all their food, have almost no natural resources, and are completely surrounded by water which is good and bad. All the us has to do is a naval blockade and bomb the top 3 cities and Japan's entire economy collapses, their people begin to starve, and they sue for peace. This isn't at all like Vietnam which has many countries boardering it, has a lot of arable land and farmers, and was not reliant on a small number of central economic hubs like Japan is.

A video on the 1945 scenario would be interesting. No nukes and the Allies invade Japan. Note that the conventional bombing campaign would be far more extensive and by the time shore landings were attempted every Japanese City may have been burnt to the ground. By that time the science of creating firestorms was well understood, and creating Dresden's in every Japanese City or town would have been within the capabilities of the Allied Airforces. And with Japan using a lot of wood in its construction due to earthquakes, they would have been even more vulnerable. There were even crazy ideas like the "Bat Bomb", which may have actually worked, but even if not having widescale success, it would still distract the Japanese as they would have to search for bats in the predawn hours in every attic. So the ground landings could take place against a completely destroyed nation, and maybe the firestorms would be enough to convince Japan to surrender?

Millions of casualties on both sides for the invasion. If the invasion succeeds then 10s of milions more casualties on the allied side due to guerilla war. Note Japan could switch to a guerilla war at any time if they got tired of the allies. In the end the allies would be driven out like the Vietnam War with way more casualties and higher costs.
