When comparing methylated spirits and bioethanol for use in an alcohol burner like a Trangia, there are several factors to consider: 1. Performance: - Methylated Spirits: It's a common fuel for alcohol stoves, including Trangia. It burns efficiently and is widely used for camping and outdoor cooking. - Bioethanol: It can also be used, but its performance might slightly vary. It typically has a lower energy content per volume compared to methylated spirits, which might result in a less intense flame and potentially longer cooking times. 2. Availability and Cost: - Methylated Spirits: Generally more readily available in hardware stores or outdoor shops and might be more cost-effective. - Bioethanol: Availability can vary depending on the region. It might be more expensive than methylated spirits, especially if it's marketed as a specialized fuel. 3. Cleanliness of Burn: - Methylated Spirits: Burns relatively cleanly but can leave some residue, depending on the additives. - Bioethanol: Often burns very cleanly with minimal soot or residue, which is an advantage for maintaining your burner. 4. Safety and Toxicity: - Methylated Spirits: Contains toxic additives like methanol, making it unsuitable for indoor use without proper ventilation. - Bioethanol: Generally safer in terms of toxicity when burned, as it produces fewer harmful emissions. However, like all fuels, it requires proper handling and ventilation. 5. Environmental Impact: - Methylated Spirits: Not particularly eco-friendly due to its chemical additives. - Bioethanol: More environmentally friendly, being a renewable resource with a smaller carbon footprint. In summary, while both can be used in a Trangia burner, methylated spirits are more traditional, potentially more efficient, and widely available. Bioethanol is a cleaner, greener alternative, but it might not provide the same heat output and can be more costly.

Cost seems to vary wildly on Meths, B&M had it at less than £2, tesco £5 and halfrauds £10. All for the same 500ml brand, Toolstation also had a 2l bottle for £10. In the end I went for Bio-ethanol for the clean burn at £10/2ltr. Good comparison though.

Bio Ethanol 100% 12 litres for £36 on Amazon. Meths nowadays, £4.50 for 500 ml on average. Bio burns 16% hotter, plus you can add 10% water, still same burn time, cleaner though. Meths used to bd dirt cheap, but for some reason, its now dearer than a bottle of wine?? Good video though buddy 👍

@@jasonnalagowild3070 it helps a little bit. I use bio all the time tbh. Bulk buying makes it 9 pence a burn for around 20 + mins, depending on which stove I use.

$13 for 2L of bio-ethanol. In Canada, all I can find is 3.78L for $45 for bio-ethanol. It might be cheaper in larger quantities. It's only use here seems to be in bio-ethanol fireplaces.

I had really good experience with bioethanol, it was a bit more expensive than denatured alcohol that smelt bad and taste real bad. Then couple years ago I found an ad on facebook marketplace for 30L of denatured for 30 EUR and I had to take it. Lifetime supply. Thankfully that brand had less odor and taste than my previous experience. I think the seller wanted to make some hand sanitiser during covid but denatured is not suitable for that.

There is no difference in the energy density of these two fuels. Bio-ethanol 21MJ/L, Methalyted Spirits 21MJ/L. Additionally I'm not sure where you are buying your meths but I just paid £21.45 for 5litres. So I would suggest that the costs are comparable.
