Afternoon in the Archives: Student Showcase Event

The UB University Archives and Global Gender & Sexuality Studies presents “Afternoon in the Archives: Student Showcase Event,” an event highlighting undergraduate student research related to archival collections and social justice-oriented conceptions of the archive. Speakers include:
Hope Dunbar, University Archivist for the University at Buffalo. Dunbar will discuss the role archives and archivists play in preserving/describing the human experience and creating evidentiary records in the interests of democratizing information and facilitating societal transparency.
Jeff Iovannone, historian and historic preservationist. Iovannone will examine the history of LGBTQ archives and their importance in constructing a holistic and geographically diverse accounting of the past, particularly our understanding of LGBTQ place-based history.
Jessica Lowell Mason, Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies and Madwomen in the Attic Co-founder. Mason will discuss the politics of archives, particularly where systemic violence is concerned, and the importance of community archives to the survival of the marginalized and to social justice projects in GGSS classroom spaces and beyond.
Following the speakers’ presentations, undergraduate students will share presentations on archival works produced within the Global Gender and Sexuality Studies university classroom, in a celebration of student excellence that demonstrates how feminist analyses and work in the classroom contribute to archival knowledge(s) and social justice.
