Biochar has many uses, including in the production of livestock. The Nebraska Forest Service and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Animal Science have teamed up on two projects to investigate those uses. Biochar is being fed to cattle and is being used in feedlot pens at the UNL Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center. To learn more, check out our newest video!

Would be interested in seeing a second part, after taking all samples and collecting all data. Compared to previous operations to new operations.

Make biochar from corn cobs and feed that to the cattle. That way you can get a local source and reduce the waste generated on local farms. I hope more research has been done.

Отличное дело девушки! Если докажете научно свои теории, можно будет сократить выбросы метана от скота. А это, уменьшит глобальное потепление.

This is very interesting. Is the biochar activated/inoculated with nutrients before being fed to the cattle? From my understanding, if biochar is put into the soil without being activated it robs nutrients from the soil. Just wondering if it affects cattle in the same way.

Biochar is activated by soaking up liquids and solids like manure and cattle urine and it holds those nutrients because they are VERY poures like a sponge and when you add it to your fields or pasture.

Hi there, have you tried organic coating of the biochar to increase its ability for nitrate capture? I can send over some research papers on the topic (Claudia Kammann) if you're interested.

Please explain just a little....how do you coat the biochar, with what?
@claudiakammann6339
@claudiakammann6339 3 жыл бұрын
@@curiousbystander9193 An organic coating develops over time in the soil, or during co-composting of biochar, by labile water soluble organic carbon that gets attached to biochar's surfaces. It helps biochar to retain mobile anionic nutrients such as nitrate. If you're from the scientific community you can reach me by mail and I'll send you the respective papers. Recently, we started experimenting with a tea or coffee (spent coffee, cooked again) solution that we soaked the biochar in and let it dry. Having such a biochar in soil reduced nitrate leaching by up to 70%, but that's ongoing research at the moment.

@@claudiakammann6339 i"ve been building fair quantities of white pine bark/hardwood bark and leaf mold soils for quite some time..it takes time........always amended with wood ash and lime, rabbit poop, bug fraise, and worm casting. It's been quite effective growing just about anything in multiple settings, yet am of the opinion it;s N can be enriched....thus my interest in biochar (which I have anyway and inevitably is a small part of my ash). Yet, I want to layer in biochar in my working piles on the front side......thus I believe I would be achieving this organic coating of the biochar and it would be part of this soil system when screened on the back side of the process. ANyhow, thanks for your response here. Oh one question...... does biochar neutralize acidic soils similarly to ash (is it basic)?
@claudiakammann6339
@claudiakammann6339 3 жыл бұрын
@@curiousbystander9193 Yes, it's quite basic (due to the ashes) and has some liming capacity :-)

@@claudiakammann6339 thanks, as I suspected....I need to do some work here to see the capacity my piles have for how much biochar. I suspect, time brings it all back to the middle.....gosh I hate adding another year to a pile....or maybe, a good soak of the biochar in acidic urine prior to adding to the pile would do...plus the nitrogen from the urine.....that's a reasonable direction to counter over application of alkaline matter as I would foresee when trying to add significant quantities of biochar......so as to increase the amount per yard in the end product. anyhow...thanks again.

Great idea but needs to be fed to the animal....we found amazing results in our chickens. Also put molasses on it and the cows suck it down

They are feeding it to one group of steers at 1% of the feed. There were two experiments going on with biochar.

Biochar is the same as activated charcoal !! Surely you can feed it to livestock!!!!

Biochar is just charcoal activated charcoal needs something done to it (not 100% sure) to make it activated charcoal like you'd get at a pharmacy. Activated biochar I believe means it was put into waste/compost system to capture nutrients to be applied later.

And poisoning ALL affected soils with antibiotics excreted by cattle and other livestock. For at least 1,000 years. Which is the half life of charcoal/biochar! Correct?
