Another great review ! I'm planning my first pota outing still a month or 2 out but was getting close to acquiring a marine deep cycle those always do well for repeater backup but not easily "portable". I've never heard of this battery until now its definitely one to look into. Thanks bro

They are incredible batteries. I can use my 30ah battery over a weekend trip without worrying about running out. On CW at 90 watts (low sunspots mean more power) it will draw the battery down. I was operating yesterday starting with a battery that I used for about 4 hours a few days before, as well as running my VHF radio for a few nets and was able to operate for 3 hours. It dipped to 11.7 volts a few times (that is the level that I have for my battery warning) but it did not stop putting out full power. I need to get one of those meters you have so I can be more quantitative, but I agree with you these batteries are nothing short of amazing.

Very Nice! (In my best Borat voice). Those 7300s are very good radios. I used one on VHF field day. Being able to loop your CQ call makes it very easy. The battery performed very well as did your antenna. I have my full/extra exam next week so hopefully will have access to full power from then onwards. 73s

Hey Mike! Thanks so much for that review... I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on one... it will serve 2 purposes... 1, my car makes SO much noise in my radio it's rediculous... Talked to Kevin at Bionno... what a great guy... emailed me back on a Sunday evening... did not expect that.,.. he gave me great advice... get the bioenno battery, 20 amp and a West Mountain Power Gate and I'd be completely isolated from my car's noise... anyway..... lol ... my 2nd use is doing what you do... I've been doing the POTA activation thing a little lately...think i've activated 7 parks so far.... I've done all my stuff so far from my mobile setup (7100, Diamond multiband HF/vHF/UHF mobile antenna (works good) and have a Diamond Screwdriver that I'm going to get going after i get the battery. but... sorry... blah blah.. I want to get my butt out of the car during nice weather and put up a good antenna... Thanks so much for doing this vid... I was going to 'be a man' and go for the 30 amp battery... after watching this.. why would I? BTW... we worked FT8 back in sept of 18 on 40... glad to see you making vids... been doing this craziness for over 25 years now.. anyway... thanks again... keep up the good work...

Yeah Kevin is pretty good people. Service second to none for sure. Its way better in my opinion to actually be outside operating POTA. I do a lot of car activations on my lunch breaks, (before the apocalypse) and its fun, but I just love being outside. Looks like you will be too soon. 73

@@hamradiotube Yer quite welcome Mike and not to worry. The Prez of the local club (klub) lives 1/2 mile down the road and he loaned me his old IC 726 and a KW AT-130 tuner so I be on da air here. Unfortunately we're surrounded by low mountains 1500-1600 meters (or is that feet?) that seem to be keeping me from DXing the USA. Got 4 summits within sight of the farm that have never been activated tho so next trip i'm packing my POTA gear (and the new 891) with me for some SOTA.

Great video! I have the 30ah in a Pelican 1510 go kit and based on Bioenno specs at 100w, I should get 15 hours of runtime, 20ah 10 hours, amazing and worth the extra money for sure 73 de N1AD

I was inspired by a video from K7IJF a while back. He built a battery supply into a Pelican 1430 Hard Case. I stepped it up a bit, and installed a Bioenno 40 Amp Battery, along with a 20 Amp MPPT Solar Charge Controller, MC-4 to Powerpole Adaptor, TWO Powerpole Dual Plugs, Two Powerpole Cig Sockets and TWO 2 Port 3 AMP usb outs on the control Panel, along with a Samlex 350 Watt Pure Sine Inverter. The thing is AWESOME!

I have a used 7300 still sitting in the box need to get my radio room put together. Mostly bought the 891 and Bioenno for portable use only with the Wolf River. Really enjoyed the video!

I just drop-tested my 20AH....it didn't go well. Tore the shrink wrap, and the PVC case separated on the back end. Totally my fault, but won't take a charge now. Hats off to Bioenno though. Sent them an email, and they said to ship it in, and they would take a look at it. W6BKM

Oof, that sucks. I'm sure its prob something that can be fixed. Most likely a wire came disconnected on one of the cells or the BMS.

That is the HamRadioWorkbench 12v power supply. Its really just a power pole distribution box. I did a video on it.

Thanks for doing another great video, i'm considering getting a 10AH battery for portable operations. I use an ft857D. I'll be running about 20 watts for about 3 or 4 hours. Will a 10 AH be sufficient?

That should be fine. I don't know what the 857 draws on RX and it would really depend on your duty cycle/mode of operating. I don't think you would have any issues especially running 20 watts. Kick that up to 100 watts with a full on pileup and you will go through that 10 ah in prob 2-3 hours.

Great video. I am curious, what do you have connected between the voltmeter and the radio? Never really get a good look at it in the video, and I am guessing it is some kind of voltage regulator, but not sure why you would need one? I agree, for me the most important, crucial part of the review is the actual set up. Everything after 0:40 sec is obvious, but the dc power distribution and connections specific to your test and your transceiver and other peripherals are skipped. These details wouldve added a great deal more utility to your review, even if you think they’re “obvious”. Video and audio of you operating are frankly, superfluous. It’s the setup, power connections, and data collection that matter most, then skip the actual operating, then cut to the chase to analyze the data.

Thanks Mike. I’m using a no longer available app called HamLog. You should be able to download an App called HAMRS by Jarrett Green. I use it on every device I have except my iPad because it’s too old. It is by far the absolute best app for potable logging. It’s designed for POTA and won’t really replace a full blown logging program, but it’s perfect for what we need out in the field. When I’m done I upload my logs to the POTA website and transfer the contacts to my main logging software on my Mac called Aether.

We have several good repeaters in our area but the best is the Cold Springs 442.150 the antenna is at 400ft and has great coverage, the Livingston repeater is pretty good 147.040, we have several more that on the Lake but not too high so coverage is not great. I will keep up whit when you have your PODTA Dow here and try to get over to the park and meet all you great GUYS ❗️73. KV5P

Mike, what is the make/model of your little laptop? Is it also capable of software updates for your transceiver and programing? I'm a Mac OS guy, new to HAM, so I'm looking to get a small Windows laptop as I too normally operate remotely from the field throughout CONUS. Regards~ JD

I cannot condone the use of any windows computer, even though I had to use one for field day. That's an iPad mini with a bluetooth keyboard. Logging software is called HamLog.

The antenna is the PackTenna linked dipole. The mast is a a fishing pole.

My 20aH just arrived today. Using the Bioenno charging brick. How long should first charge take, and how long can the battery be on the charger? Concerned about damage from overcharge. I have a 7300, too, and will be operating portable using a homebrew buddipole dipole anntenna I recently built.

Congrats. I think the charger puts out 2-4 amps so if your battery is totally depleted maybe 5 hours or so. I honestly don't use Bioennos charger a lot so you may have to experiment.

Is that a voltmeter/wattmeter between your battery and radio? I am looking for something that I can continuously monitor the voltage of my new Bioenno 20A battery while I am operating. I see that Powerwerx carries one, but I don’t know if it the best out there. Ok now I see you are using the Powerwerx meter. I see it for $49.99 on their site. Is that the same one you are using? Do I just buy the meter with the Anderson Powerpole Connectors and I am good to go? What powers the meter?

Yes I am using the Powerworx meter. It’s the most accurate one I have. It goes between the battery and the radio and is powered my the battery.

What is the voltage as you transmit? Does that battery drop to 12(ish) like a deep cycle lead acid?

It drops down to the upper 12V range. Prob 12.7-12.9 depending on what mode you're using.

Will a set of standard 12 VDC "cigarette lighter" connector work to connect the IC-7300 to an Li-ion battery or do I need to go with Anderson Powerpole connectors? The reason I ask is that the external 12 VDC outlets on my RV are female "cigarette lighter" type and it would be great if I could use the same cable setup to connect to the Bioenno battery as I use to connect to the RV.

It should. I use my cigarette port in my car to power my 50 watt vhf/uhf radio as I cannot get through the fire wall. I just put a bigger fuse on it. A lot of people will tell you not to do it but I don’t have a choice. You could also make a cigarette to powerpole adapter so you could just have power poles on your radio and use the cig adapter when you need it. I’m a huge power pole fan so everything I get 12v DC immediately gets them. That way everything is standardized and if you need adapters you can do that too.

Mike , Really needing some input from you been away from the hobby for way too long like a decade and I never did do much portable or field work, and with the holiday weekend coming up soon I need to figure out what battery is going to work best for me I want to take my 100 W radio with me and use it from inside my camping trailer most of the radio work will be confined to the evening hours , i’m guessing between five and nine or 10 PM so roughly about four hours . I need something that’s going to work for me for about four or five days using it like that so during the day I could try to figure out how to recharge it back up I will be dry camping but will have my generator with me can you help point me in the right direction as to what would be the best for me

Depends on how much you’re going to tx and what mode. If you’re doing light casual ssb operation this battery should last you a couple days without charging. If you’re planning on calling CQ POTA and running a pileup you will need to recharge it most likely every day. If you have a generator just get the charger from Bioenno. It’s like $20 and charge it off that. Or get a solar panel and charge controller and pray that it’s sunny while you’re out.

Well your 100 watt radio is prob going to draw about 1ah on rx. So 5ah's will be used just being on during that time. You'd prob use at least another 5ah but prob closer to 7-10 if you're going to be talking that much. To put it into perspective, I used ~14.5 amp hours of battery in about 3 hours running an almost non stop pileup doing a POTA one day. Got about 300 contacts. I usually only run 90 watts though and was using the 891.

Remember that one time you used your Tarheel and memory controller, I ordered the memory controller today from HRO and it will be here in time.. my Tarheel on my truck is working fantastic. So for now I will will be running longer coax and a longer control cable into the travel trailer with me and operating that way

hello, i need help on this question; I am running a ft-450d ham radio that pulls 13.8 volts at 22 amps my question is, i want to run 8 Pack Headway 38120HP LifePO4 Battery Cells to operate the radio but have the battery pack connected to a bus bar that is fed by a 220 amp alternator that will be shared by 2 deep cycle batteries that will power other devices. when pulling power from the lithium battery pack the lithium battery pack might pull the charging juice from the deep cycle batteries because they are sharing the same bus bar and alternator is there a resistor that i can put in place to minimize this from happening and to draw more power from the lithium battery pack than its charging source without killing the lithium battery pack? it will almost be the same concept as my car battery mod with the lithium battery and supercapacitors.

You have a Bioenno 20ah...I have a Bioenno 20 ah...what are the chances!? Last winter field day, I worked VHF simplex all day long at 50 watts and the battery held steady at 13.25 V.

This gives me hope. I just bought and received a 30ah Bioenno because my fully charged deep cycle RV battery on its own will not power the 7300 after 3 digital mode transmissions at 25 watts. The draw from my 7300 is too much for it.

Thats odd your deep cycle wouldn't supply enough current. The Bioenno surely will. You should be able to go for quite a while with that 30AH too. Good choice.

@@hamradiotube Just an update...I got a 50ah bioenno because the 30 amp hour will not keep the 7300 going on digital modes. My guess is that it being a digital mode is the problem. The 50 won't keep it powered either, radio shuts down even at 10 watts of digi mode. I haven't tried on voice but maybe that's the difference...

@@hamradiotube On JS8 Call I get probably 3 transmissions before the radio cuts out. I just put my 30ah on it and did voice and sure enough it doesn't kill the radio. Had a 10 min. QSO to Florida. Higher duty cycle on digital mode maybe? But on dig modes, yeah, it's not good on a battery. I've tried so many batteries with pretty much the same result. On my 857 though, I can run the dig mode a little longer. Ok on both radios for receive, but transmitting, the 7300 just takes too much power.

I'd like to be able to power more than one device off one Bioenno battery, like a transceiver, wattmeter and computer, provided the battery can safely supply that much current. How would I be able to do that? Would I need one of those RIGRunner panels? 73 VE7NDE

Thats certainly possible. You'd prob want a bit bigger battery than the 20AH though if you want to charge your computer.. For your radio and watt meter you can just get an inline watt meter like the PowerWerx one I use and that would take care of that. For your computer, unless you have a 12V input on it, you would need an inverter to go from 12V to 120V and then plug in your computers power cord. This is really inefficient but it works. I've done it with my computer, inverter, and 10AH battery. Pretty sure I used most of the battery just charging the computer. You also have to consider the current draw of your radio and your computer while they are both in use. The only reason you would need a rig runner or some type of distribution block would be if you want to plug multiple power pole devices into it, which with this configuration you probably wouldn't. Also, another thing to consider, as I was going to do this same setup for Field Day last summer, is the quality of inverter you get. We picked up a couple from amazon for about $30 each, and they put out an incredible amount of RFI, rendering them totally useless while we were operating.

@@hamradiotube No, not that variety of wattmeter. I'm referring to the one on the other side of the transceiver, like an MFJ-849. And you would really need a "pure sine wave" inverter if you want to avoid RF hash from it.

@@denelson83 Oh that kind of watt meter. That's no problem, they draw very little power. But yes you would need a power pole distribution block for that, the radio and the pure sine wave inverter.
