I remember reading the book Caesar, the Colossus, by Adrian Goldsworthy (great read, I recommend it) and the part of the Civil War had me hooked and I was upset as well when I read about how Pompey died. It was an unglorius death for one of the greatest men of his time.

@@generalhyde007 yeah, Cicero is one of my favorite politicians in history. His Philippics towards Antony are some of the best speeches, and everything he says about his rings true for many tyrants in history minus the more personal attacks. His death saddened me, but at least he went out like a champ, bowing his neck for Antony's assassin and saying, "I go no further: approach, veteran soldier, and, if you can at least do so much properly, sever this neck."

You might be right. However, I’d ‘ put my money ‘ on Trajan, possibly Hadrian, and almost certainly on Constantine, who both detached himself from the withering West to establish a Roman capital that survived to within decades of the voyages of Columbus. Not to mention his almost literal destruction of paganism, and standard-bearing of Christian monotheism as a faith completely aligned with the state.

Doubtful. By the time Caesar was at his peak Pompey was just an old man. Still a solid military administrator but he wasn't gonna be putting down rebellions left and right. He barely beat Serotorious with the full support of the Senate when he had the vigor. It was sooner or later that other Senators would have challenge him.

@martijnvanderzee5215
@martijnvanderzee5215 Жыл бұрын
I suggest you read into Cicero, one of the greatest statesmen to ever live and a contemporary of pompeius and Caesar. He stated that pompeius was already acting like an autocrat. Cicero stated that whatever the outcome of the civil war would be, it would probably mean the death of the republic. I think another optimate senator mentioned it too, maybe ahaenobarbus, but not sure. So no, Rome would probably not have remained a republic.
@jerm70
@jerm70 Жыл бұрын
The difference between Pompey and Caeaar in that regard is quite simple. Pompey would have killed his political opponents and after those purges no senator would be able to stop him from seizing absolute power. Caesar wasn't that interested in absolute power for the sake of it. He just had policies that could only exist with the senate being abused.

Interesting. To me, he's a bit more like Robb Stark. Both were great military leaders, and both were assassinated through treachery. Littlefinger came from nothing but he plotted behind the scenes to rise to the very top.. His lineage was insignificant and he didn't appear threatening, hence his moniker. Pompey's family was already prominent when he came on the scene. He was a central figure in the Roman politics, and not at all a "behind the scenes" kind of guy. Most importantly, he rejected absolute power and fought to defend the republic.

Pompey was a great logistician and planner, not a master of the battlefield like Caesar was. In fact during his war against Caesar he was actually winning by boxing Caesar in and cutting off his supplies. Had he stuck to this plan rather than meet him on the open field at Pharsalus (due to being pressed by the Senate to give battle), Pompey could have ended up the victor.

Great show. The first was more detailed though. I was hoping to hear more about his flight from Caesar, but it seems like you sped things up at this point. Maybe there are scant accounts of time, or you’d covered it in a related video. Keep em coming though Simon. Can’t get enough

I always think of the HBO show Rome when people talk about the first triumvirate and the roman civilwars.

What about Marcus Agrippa? He might’ve been the best of the lot but he was a career loyal 2nd banana.

4:15 the senate was unwilling to grant a triumph on a victory over slaves. They thought it would sully the prestige of the honor. I think they granted Crassus an ovation, which is a lesser form of triumph.
