Biology: Blessed But Biased | What The Hell Navya | Navya Naveli Nanda | IVM Podcasts | WTHN E 08
Follow us: linktr.ee/what...
Life as a woman never settles for us. We're constantly governed by phases, going through cycles of good and bad moods, with countless things to stress about, and a million precautions to take, all the while being strong and smiling. It begins with periods, followed by pregnancy, then menopause, governed by an unkind biological clock that often pits us against unfair deadlines.
In this episode, our hosts talk about their period stories, navigating a masculine design of society and logistics, sex education, the awkward and the embarrassing, and much more.

Before I started listening to this Podcast I didn't expect Shweta Bacchan Nanda to be the person that she came across as. This depth, warmth, knowledge, awareness about almost every subject without losing the realistic perception of thing happening around. We human usually tend to restrict our ideas of things within our experiences and that's why despite coming from well to do family, she's so relatable to everyone (irrespective of where they come from) in every podcast. That's what a well read person is. I want to sound like her when I am of her age.

Jaya is so right. Biology and nature have been unfair to women and it would have been more difficult to deal with in past when there was no medical science or ways to manage hygiene during periods and even today it affects work, mobility of women

These ladies are so intelligent ! Listening to these podcasts has changed my perspective about families who belong to film industry. Jaya bachan ji is an incredibly intelligent woman . She dresses so simple and yet her thoughts are way better, modern and forward thinking than so many other woman who are just out there and pretenders . Shweta bachan is such a knowledgeable woman. Glad I came across her podcasts

I love how Ms. Shweta was realistic about everything middle-aged women go through! It's a lesson! For young generation the changes are coming, and they get to be hopeful, coz they get to hope it will happen in their lifetime, but we have to understand the perspective of middle-aged women, who see, that it is just not fast enough. And as a female Indophile, I love learning about the society, Indian women etc. I also read the comments, to learn.

Pertinent episode. We don't talk about Menopause at all. There is not even enough science or discussion about it. It is time to discuss and make it a relevant topic. Most of the times even the family does not understand how it is to go through menopause. Thank you Shweta for talking it loud. It is about time.

Omg Navya I so love your podcast n convo with Nani and your Mom especially this topic about menopause. When I started menopause it was very tough for me having to deal with it by myself , hubby was no help but I turned to my drs and talk and found some relief. I wish this can be a subject to be taught in school to teenagers the boys so they can understand from a young age. Men needs classes to let them understand what woman is going through. Most of them act dumb. Very nice topic love it . Navya your Mom and Nani left out the sexual part . When one is going through the menopause phase they do not sometimes want to be touched nor have any sexual relations and that cause lots of problems in a marriage because again men does not want to understand they just wants their needs fulfilled. Tnks NavyA 🙏❤️

Nice podcast Navya. All the 3 ladies spoke well. It’s the women n girls in the villages of India that need more help n support with this issue, n for them n their men folk to know and realize it’s not a taboo, n the woman shouldn’t be treated as an outcast during her days of menstruation.True!a very long way to go but at least there has been a start👏🏽

Hey Navya, just a quick suggestion, kindly consider implementing it, if it's feasible. 1. I think, especially this episode, has to be in Hindi (or in any most commonly understood language) so that it reaches to the girls, who need to actually hear this out. The least which can be done is to have a Hindi subtitle for this. :) 2. I wish we have a complete video of this podcast instead of those snippets, so that it's easy for the audience to correlate the fact that 'Yes, it's completely okay to be vocal about periods.' When they see you guys talking, rather than just listening, I think, it will have such a bigger impact! :) Thanking you in anticipation! :)

I’m going through pre-menopause, so what Shweta said was informative. In our home, we were made to use my grandmother’s saris which were made into cloth pads. The saris were white with a red border in Bengali style. Later, we used an old katha with beautiful embroidery which was coming apart. The women guardians of our family thought that sanitary pads that were sold were an evil Western influence which would supposedly trigger materialism and vague obscene thoughts in girls. The TV was switched off when sanitary napkin advertisements came on Doordarshan. Grandma would cover her eyes and sigh, “Kaliyug!” Many expensive saris were used to absorb blood as sanitary pads were thought to be vulgar by blood relations. Our family guruji had instilled these views.

Shweta Bachhan is hilarious and channels my mind here. This feels like a conversation with my mother and niece but the public discourse hopefully helps move the needle on empathy towards women’s health. Women’s sexual health is a topic that deserves to be spoken out publicly in a sensible discourse and safe space and I hope you can take that on sometime. These are not easy discussions, so thank you for having the courage to use your platform to facilitate these conversations. I have enjoyed the series so far!

This episode truely makes us count our blessings.... I went to an elite school in Bangalore which followed the curicullum from Cambridge University of London ( the curricilum has shifted slightly now as it follows our indian curriculum, which is just as good) ..... Sex education was a part of it... They would educate us about this through educational movies...... So as& when, any of my group of friends had period, we would share our experiences with each other... about what it felt like & the sanitary napkin we used which later shifted to tampons( I used the latter through most part of my pre- menopausal years. .. ... untilt they brought out articles on why tampons were not as healthy as sanitary napkins.. . . & the menopause phase.. was a little confusing when we suddenly realize we are not young anymore, but being someone who believes in growing old gracefully, I handled it pretty well too.... ... all thanks to the impeccable school education where 60℅ of a childs personality is moulded......!!! .

Please think of initiating as a host /anchor on the lines of Simi Garewal ( Rendezvous)and Sabira Merchant ( What's the Good word) whom I rate as the best English speaking persons. As a 32 old woman who has major depressive disorder and doesn’t want to be bothered about removing body hair( been blessed with a lot of it), it is difficult to block out the noise. When I walk around wearing a sleeveless shirt, I can feel people judging me for it, and it’s not a nice feeling to be judged for it. Shweta is right on this one-people in general including women NEED to be more sensitive in this day and age. One should always try to put oneself in the others shoes if he/she doesn’t understand what they’re going through. Not everyone has mastered the practice of blocking out the noise.

I think shweta is very articulate about menopause here, and even with all her privileges is highlighting how much women are struggling, and also providing practical solutions such as womens community or discussion groups. Jaya has also eloquently put across the terrible reality of her experience of menstruation lack of sanitary wash facilities on set, lack of education and even the draconian style of sanitary wear she had no choice but to use. With Navya, as her mum points out, she is young, her hearts in right place...unfortunately, when she talks about a gap in market for menopause items such as vitamins?..i think she is just looking at these subjects i.e. periods, pregnancy, menopause as mere business opportunities...you can hear her glee at the thought of cashing in on these issues, and that is a sad indictement of the youth of today! Insincere....

In this episode Navya was irritating... She was so interruptive and not allowing shweta to talk it through... The thing she doesn't understand or at the point when Shweta gets at her she tends to overhaul and Jaya is silent cus she finds someone to get to Shweta. I found her struggling to talk as she is going through menopause and wanted to vent and Navya was only dragging it to periods.... Just because it's her cause... Just my question... When people start understanding period better across India.... What job will she have??? Please address menopause also even though you don't understand it
