Michael Pollan's new book "How To Change Your Mind" surveys the highly controversial terrain of the renaissance of both the science and popular usage of psychedelic substances. As one of our most brilliant and clear-eyed explorers of such topics as plant intelligence and how we feed ourselves, Michael will share his luminous insights from what began as investigative reportage and became a very personal interior journey into the mystery of consciousness and the nature of spirituality.
Read an excerpt from Michael Pollan's book, How To Change Your Mind, at bioneers.org/how-to-change-yo...
This keynote talk was delivered at the 2018 National Bioneers Conference.
Introduction by Kenny Ausubel, Bioneers Co-Founder and CEO.
Bio: Michael Pollan, a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine since 1987, Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and Director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism, is one of the nation's most influential writers and scientific and environmental investigative journalists. His many award-winning, best-selling books include: The Botany of Desire; The Omnivore's Dilemma; In Defense of Food; and, most recently, How to Change Your Mind.

I hate that psilocybin gets grouped with drugs like cocaine and heroin. Mushrooms are a remedy, not a vice! I went on a microdose treatment for a couple of months and within the first week, every sight of a cigarette got me questioning why I was doing all that to myself. It really works.

childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

Psychedelics in general have done what hundreds of hours of PTSD therapy couldn't. I went from being on 31 pill daily for mental states to 0 over the course of 13 weeks. Like everything in the world. It's not for everyone and experiences will certainly vary. Me and my friends approached it from a lens of healing and learning and it's exactly what we got out of it.

The one time I had a bad trip, ended up being a great learning experience. I took some shrooms, called ALL of my friends. They sounded excited when I told them I was on shrooms. Inevitably they would ask if they came over they could have some. I didn't have any extra, then they would say, "Oh I can't trip sit with you I'm busy". This hit me deep in the feels, causing a bad trip. So I asked myself why I had sooooo many shitty "friends". The answer? "You're a druggy and so are they. You're pretty shitty too. You're a loser. Move away from your toxic home town and stop doing drugs". Felt excited and happy after getting this answer. I moved that same week. Best decision of my life.

So,very slowly and carefully I have gazed myself on the mirror and wawww ....I was soooo beautiful ;my God I didn't know how beautiful I was until then...There was nothing to be afraid of...Everything was beautiful and so did I...So I say do not condition yourself and give yourself a chance to see how beautiful You truly are...

People with depression proceed with caution. I suffered from extreme depression and ptsd from a accident that left me burned and disfigured. I struggled with depression for years but never suicidal. I tried a mushroom trip as a last resort to cure my depression and what happened scared me! The trip made me comfortable with the thought of death. Almost made me think that suicide wouldn’t be so bad, it’s ok to die. These thoughts scared me to no end! I didn’t have these thoughts before the trip. Luckily I spoke with my wife throughout this process and together we worked it out. Later on a tried micro dosing which ultimately I believed truly helped me. The micro dosing made me more open and I was able to lay it all out and work thru things with my wife to help guide me. So just a word of caution. And please let your loved ones know what you are doing so they can offer help if needed.

I was once worried that I might be a psychopath. I told this to my counselor and she said, "I definitely know you're not a psychopath." I asked her how she knew. "A psychopath wouldn't be worried about it. A psychopath wouldn't care." I dont know if that conveys what I'm trying to say, but what I'm getting at is perhaps being scared of being ok with suicide is a good thing... depression is like a living death and a lot of our thoughts while depressed are like being ok with dying like that. So perhaps that is the lesson. Well...I think I really shit the bed on that one and i dont think what I said makes any sense, but I hope you know what I mean. Being scared of beingnok with death is like being afraid of death which, for a person with a wonderful wife etc is a good thing. Kicks your ass into appreciating life.

In the 60s I found LSD and loved it as I learned about myself. After a few years I realised I didn't need artificial drugs to open those doors of perception. I've only smoked herbs and drank beer in moderation. Now at 70 I look back and see my growth as a human who wants to be kind as I would enjoy others kindness. I can go on and on about me, but it's about all of us growing into PEACE as the caretakers of this fragile planet, not the owners. Nuff sed. Peace from California

I tried psychedelics in the form of shrooms also with some really strong weed and alcohol together. And needless to say the trip itself did not go well. However I think it was the catalyst to coming out a changed man. Afterwards i realized I was a very unhappy individual and there was a lot of dark shit buried deep within my sub-conscience. Things ive always thought if i said or expressed out loud people would hate me. My one friend who was with me while i was tripping out stood by me and to this day is probably my closest friend. Needless to say, ive come out a changed man. In 3 months I’ve eliminated all of my people-pleasing tendencies, ive sought professional help for something that happened to me in my childhood, started a new career, I even started dating. I probably won’t go out of my way to try it again but that experience has made a lot of things that i thought were impossible, VERY easy today.

I can relate because my first microdose did not go well. I, too, attribute it likely to be the result of having too much "stuff" in my past that I lug around every day. I was going to not take it again but with this realization, I thought I should give it another go. Hopefully, I will find similar success.

Drugs that alter one's conciseness are for those who need a crutch and have an inability to confront and control their minds and actions and environment. Psychedelics even what is called micro-dosing today is a bandage at best as with most drugs like this even if you keep the dose the same the effect can be drastically different and vary in intensity from one to the next.

I looked in thhthe mirror while on lsd and saw the face of Adolf Hitler. Much later i heard that that house had been used by te Nazi´s for interrogation during their occupation of Europe. In the same house, I did a small experiment: I was not drinking any alcohol then, but my boss had given me a bottle of sherry and 2 glasses for a job well done. So i sat, meditated, and asked a question: what is alcohol? Then i drank 2 small glasses of sherry and lay down. About 10 minutes later a carpet of all black inscts, spider like, entered the room and crawled towards me. Terrifying. I knew it was a hallucination but could do nothing to stop it. I could not utter any sound.Paralised with fear. That was 45 years ago. Mind is a strange and tricky place. Nowadays, i just shift focus and enter the Transcendent anytime. No need for any drugs.

@@sandrastreifel6452 "those natural substances do aid and improve your meditations".This may be true for some, and not so much for others. In the end, even Terence McKenna did not make a lot of improvement compared to Ram Das. With all his knowledge and experience, he still was trapped in the mind. I see Psycheldelic users who have blown up ego´s and think they are so great, but actually horrible people. Psyechedelics, if used correctly, may give some insight using it once or twice, and stimulate to start meditation, but i also see, that it becomes a hindrance once the level of psycvhedelics is reached "naturally", via meditation. The ego strikes back at such a point, and all advance disappears because the "body-memory" triggers the ego back into action. And then it is much harder to get rid of. Psychedelics do nothing to evaporate the ego.

Come back to this comment within a year, to see if it still applies. I don't believe a trip can clinically 'cure' anything to be honest. When you have scientific evidence besides some random fMRI scan of the same single brain on acid. BTW feeling sad isn't the same as depression, if you didn't know that already. If you go to a psychiatrist or doctor and he gives you a diagnosis, you can call tell me you suffered from a major depressive disorder. Depression is a lifelong illness, if you've had 3 depressive episodes, the chance of having a next one in the near or further future is almost certain.

Once I accepted this everything shifted and I was with my mom (who died when I was a child.) Not physically but in spirit and it was very clear it was her. She showed me the pain in leaving me but the beauty in my own life as I am the mother now she passed me a strength I never had and help me climb out of my void. I then met God who showed me how they were constantly with me and how everything was alright and showed me the new person I was. Then all of a sudden I felt powerful jolts of joy and love running through me all throughout my body, I then felt guilty that I felt soooo good and wished the same for everyone. After this I cried with happiness for a while, as if my body needed to release built up tension through crying which then put me at massive ease. Later when things were starting to wear off I had this urge to text my friends and family and connect with people to share the love. Such a fascinating substance, and I believe the mushrooms give you what you need not what you want. I feel it left me a stronger person mentally.

very droll Personally, and sincerely I say that we both know nothing at all. I was shown visually, and spoken to linguistically, but most importantly noticed that love is all that matters in the end. I wish you the best of it all my friend✌️😁

Love the story so much, first time i got the balls to try it i turned into a blue macaw made of ginger bread and flew through an endless palace made of clear crystal and flew through the refracting rainbow light rays. All while being bundled in a blanket. Keep in mind im claustrophobic to the point where i cant hug for more than 5 seconds. I woke up the next day and could function in small spaces. Not perfectly, still get freaked out but i dont panic instantly. Much happy 😊

Some truffles came through the post a few months ago. Shared half with a friend so it was a small dose but still felt something. No intense visuals but I felt some mystical awareness and noticing the way the guitars were propped up at an angle making me think of pyramids from ancient times. My friend said He felt stoned although we were smoking a bit of weed too. Can't wait for the next trip hopefully, it will make lockdown thought as if everything is just fine and humanity's future is gonna be just fine.❤

You don't need any psychedelics just sit in a dark room for 1 week The key mechanism starts with melatonin, which is created in the brain by converting tryptophan into serotonin, which is then converted into serotonin. There needs to be enough tryptophan in the body through diet. Then, the melatonin builds up over the course of the next few days. It builds up at the rate of 2-5mg per day which then tapers off at 15-20mg. The body then recognizes that melatonin is no longer needed and begins producing pinoline, 5-MeO-DMT, and DMT. THis part of the process takes about 3 days. Pinolene is released within the pineal gland (as all these compounds are) and produce “the light show” that is commonly seen in many psychedelics. The DMT and 5-MeO-DMT is a key part of the therapy. During this point, “ego death” can be experienced with an increase in “beingness”. During days 6-8, 5-MeO-DMT (which is normally only found in the womb and in the first few months) is now reactivated. Around day 9-12, there is enough mono amine oxidase inhibition from the pinoline secretion to allow the melatonin cycle to be intercepted by adrenaline and ephedrine activity to be converted into a DMT serotonin pathway. The DMT levels reach above 25mg which allows the body to transcend into “hyperspace” or the DMT realm. So you can have the same Tripp without the drug itself.

It absolutely is, but it's recommended to only do it 3 days in a row, take one day off, and then repeat. This way, your tolerance will have less time to develop as the psychoactive substances accumulate in your body to help ease your nerves
