About 35+ years and more than 100lbs. ago, I too ran the mile, in high school. I always used to think "there must be some way to put a springy, flexible blade in between the layers that made up the sole of your shoes. The idea being to give more push-off with each stride and make you faster, as well as to give you more endurance, as the shoes would be doing a lot of the work. It seems like I have heard of someone trying to do this, not long ago, but maybe I am wrong.

I believe he made a US Olympic team in the 800 meters. He's the real deal! I never had an opportunity to meet him. This video shows a side of him I never knew as I only saw him of TV in big races. It's the fact that he has such a great sense of humor that I appreciate! And he doesn't mind making a few pratfalls in public for the whole world to see. Thanks for the great video! Please be smart when considering Nick's "never dnf" mentality. There is bravery and persistence in that mentality for sure.. But sometimes intelligence is far more important than determination. Don't risk the rest of your running career for the sake of maintaining an arbitrary goal like this. Sometimes the best decision is to just stop. Protect your body. Live to runanother day. I guess the moral of the story is, find the difference between "pain" and "injury". You can run through pain.. But you should never run through injury. It's just not smart.

@@bindi123pepper123 how do you mean they hurt themselves more from quitting? Do you mean that the psychological effects of quitting are worse than the physical effects of running through physical injury?
@tarikedwards1858
@tarikedwards1858 4 жыл бұрын
@@williamdowling7718 In some cases yes, it comes down to a matter or pride, although logically it dosent make sense, as an athlete the drive to push ones self beyond their limits can have serious repercussions but in the moment can change everything. For example I was cheated out of the 100m, and 4x2 so i trained incredibly hard everyday without any breaks. I went from running 13.32, to 11.8 within the span of a week. After that I came in 2nd place in the mens conference for 100m. However I tore my hip flexor, later I would go on to run 11.57, then 10.9 but never again, what I gained was the speed I needed fulled by anger, but I was never able to run that fast again. My pride gave me a semi-permanent injury, but looking back on it I dont think I regret it, however I wish I wouldn't have gotten so angry, because maybe I would have then trained smarter

Thank you for this. I am a varsity athlete and I have DNFed one race. I was in middle school with under .25 miles to go in XC. I pulled a muscle in my side and every step I took was jabbing pain. I was out for the next week and a half but it could of been so much more if I would’ve powered though to the finish line. Never risk your body. There will be more races.

They do not give to much of an advantage, especially in running with actual prosthetics. They do not increase your stride length and you can only get as much energy out of them as you put in. With a muscle you dont have that problem. Maybe in long range running you can save energy, but if the distance is shrter you give up quite a bit of feel and control in exchange for having less muscle to propel you forward.

Bionic feet while retaining most of the leg does give an advantage. The energy transmission is more efficient than a human foot. But yeah...losing more of the leg would take away the benefit. But that is only for running. There is no benefit for climbing and other activities.

@@FantasKanal Maybe. Maybe it robs energy from the wearer. Just kidding. When competitions are measured in thousands of a second, even very small advantages matter.

as a kid i always used to run at top speed through the woods and tight playgrounds. that changed when i became 6 foot in my mid teens and fell down. falling over when big doesn't just hurt, it's deadly. if i had fallen just a few inches in any, and i mean any, direction i would have suffered serious injury or death. that was the moment i realized that i was gonna die if i kept up my favorite pass time. i tried learning parkour, but no amount of skill would save me from one small mistake. and that's all it would take to kill me. for context, back then i sprinted 18mph normally and capped at 20. (tested using recorded video and two poles exactly 10 feet apart) later i switched to sprinting only on clear straights. this was a lot safer since there were no trees, rocks, pits, ladders, poles, etc like in my previous areas. i kept this up until i needed to work absurd hours to support my family in my late teens, and had to give up almost all forms of exercise completely. moral of the story: falling while big is no laughing matter. it's dangerous. and 6 foot is only above average, not nearly your height in this video.
