We can be quite disconnected from nature, with most of our time spent in controlled interiors, such as our offices, shopping centres, and our homes, so the only real opportunity to engage with nature is on a weekend hike through a forest. But what if you can experience the same emotions and benefits of being in a forest at home? Biophilic design is a concept to increase our connection to the natural environment.
The term 'biophilia' was coined by Edward O. Wilson, and defined as "the urge to affiliate with other forms of life." When translated to architecture, it means our buildings should be celebrating the environment around them. While there are over 20 elements associated with biophilic design, in this video I focus on a few key principles to engage with nature in your home.
1. Light and Air - 1:26
2. Vegetation - 2:06
3. Water - 2:56
Sponsor - 3:36
4. Natural Materials and Colours - 5:19
5. Patina of Time - 6:16
6. Outdoor Space - 6:44
7. Relationship to Place - 7:21

When I initially came across the 93% indoor statistic, I thought that doesn't seem right, but that equates to around 2 hours outdoors a day. That doesn't apply to everyone, but there are days where I'd struggle to even spend 2 hours outside.

Lovely video and it’s exactly what motivated me when I designed my current home. I wanted my house to blend into the local environment and not dominate it.

I really love your channel. I've watched all the videos in just a few days, while doing a major decluttering project on my apartment. I appreciate the peaceful, tranquil feelings your spaces evoke, and I have learned a lot about design from your educational videos. Keep them coming.

It feels like landscape is an afterthought, it’s just the “leftover space”, so I like that you’re incorporating space into the plan so early on for landscape.

Thanking you for the inspiration and helping me understand better my personal design and architecture aesthetic. 🤜🤛. Also very interested to learn how slats are used to create privacy and protection from elements.

Regarding the slats, it’s all in the horizontal angle that will block out the high summer sun, but let in the low winter sun. What that angle is will depend on where you are in the world.

I dont know why many houses made by american architects looks boring from outside, but looks dead inside, how do you convince clients about brutalism, imo architects are the only people who love this.
