Forest and Bird is working hard to determine who the public have picked for Bird of the Century. The delay comes after US talk show John Oliver sparked a giant voting surge. Forest and Birds' Nicola Toki spoke to Breakfast's Jenny-May Clarkson about the controversy surrounding the vote.
The winner will be announced on Breakfast this Wednesday.

I was honestly entertained by John Oliver's campaign for a bird I didn't know anything about. I can tell you all about game birds near my home, but I was honestly excited to learn something new. I think John certainly did bring awareness of wildlife to millions of people around the world, and I think it's wonderful. -Olaf Seattle, WA

Tino Pai! They need the money! NZ government consistently underfunds conservation. It's a disgrace. Ka nui te pai John Oliver for your huge amount of awareness for our fragile ecosystem. I hope the world holds the newly elected National party (right wing) to account. Every time a species goes extinct, that's the end of that taonga forever. Hopefully, the huge amount of donations coming in helps Forest and Bird to massively increase their conservation efforts.

🌿 Hello! John Oliver has spoken often of his hobby of bird watching. He has also spoken of the frayed nerves the entire world is feeling & the isolation which is at pandemic levels here in the USA. That John found a way to bring fun & awareness to these beleaguered birds & address the latter is lovely. I couldn't donate much but I'm hoping this brought in donations that will help on wildlife preservation. That this old Crone participated in anything in New Zealand is a wonderful gift. I'm delighted. I researched all the birds & had great fun. I'm reminded of the beauty there is in this world which is a drastic switch from staring all day, grief stricken, fear filled & horrified at the news. Hoping New Zealanders aren't salty at this. Thanking y'all 🌿 Book 🌿

I think the very common kestrel should have a standing chance (or thrust) at the hustings herein, especially since the famous antiquarian Thomas Nashe named this fowl *"windfucker"* in 1599 (I kid you not: the "fucker" in this (im)proper and very common noun refers to the older Germanic usage here of - to beat, to thrust, to push, to strike and the philologist within said Nashe must have been referring to how the kestrel thrusts it's wings to stay aloft in ghasts of winds). Good old Nashe. It must be said that "to fuck* already meant in 1599 what it means to-day and that men (as is their wont) upon learning of this novel nomenclature started joculararly referring to one another as a windfucker. Alas, men remain children at heart no matter the age. 🕊

@@MaxSweet1 As a conservationist, rather than a "conservative" I find Nicola Willis's cuts to DOC abhorrent. It's taken years of hard work. mostly by volunteers, to hold extinctions at bay since John Key forced them to prioritise tourism over pest control and species conservation. If that's the sort of "Straight-up" that appeals to Jenny May perhaps she ought to get some new researchers! I agree that Nicola Toki does an excellent job!
