Hey guys I'm back with another video this time testing out the Nikon 600mm f4 FL that Nikon UK wonderfully loaned me for a few weeks.
Whilst out of lockdown over Xmas I headed out and shoot a local photography project on Short-eared owls! (Video shot pre lockdown, I've just had a busy week, so a little slow on the editing) Sadly the 600mm has had to return to Nikon, but what a few weeks we had!
Over the Last few years I've been thinking about adding a longer tele to my kit and the 600mm has always taken my interest as a possible addition, but as it's a little out of my style with the super tele reach being far longer than the 300mm I am used too, I wanted to test it out in the field and get some hands on experience. From my first few days it was pretty evident it was going to be a winner and with the local Short-eared Owls showing spectacularly close to home. They were the ideal project for a few weeks before we plunged back into lockdown. It's safe to say that the 600mm is even higher up my list, although I'm planning to wait for the Z mount version...! Or maybe a 400mm 2.8!
Just for context all the images in this video are shot on the 600mm FL some with the TC 1.4 E III for an awesome 850mm reach! (Headshot)
If you fancy one... tidd.ly/39QP41C I don't think you'll be disappointed!

I decided to trade my 400mm f/2.8E VR FL for the 500mm f/4E VR FL and I'm so much happier. It's only 6.5lbs and it's so well balanced it feels even lighter than it is. It's lighter than the 180-400mm or 120-300mm lenses and gives you all 99 cross-type AF points on the D5, D500, D850 while the 600mm FL featured here only offers 63 Cross-type points. The 500FL is unbelievable with the TC-14E III and you don't lose any IQ, maybe 3-5% but it's not noticeable, especially when you consider the 600FL loses more like 15-25% IQ when using the TC-14E III. When I had the 400FL, I almost always had the TC-14E III and or my D500 to get extra reach. However now I can get 700mm f/5.6 with the 1.4x and 1050mm with a D500 and TC-14E III. So I no longer want for reach, my AF remains extremely fast, my image quality is slightly higher than the 600FL, especially with the TC-14E III attached. Now having said all of that the 500FL is also cheaper and easier to find used for a decent price. I've seen them go for between $7499-$8000+ USD used, but I've heard of people getting them for even less. While the 600FL is hard to find used and if you do it's more like $9500-$10,500+, but it does have an advantage and that is the out of focus blur. No lens can match a 600mm f/4 as far as parallax or the opening of the aperture known as the entrance pupil, which is a mathematical equation. The 600mm has an entrance pupil measurement of 150mm and the 500mm f/4 only has measurement of 125mm. While the differences can be apparent in many instances, background blur is more about subject distance, distance to background from the subject and your distance to subject. This where things can start to equal out in some instances, the 600FL has about a 17.5ft minimum focusing distance and the 500FL has a much shorter 9.3ft minimum so it can help the 500FL as far as background blur when close to your subjects. My main reason though for switching to the 500FL from the 400FL, and for not buying the 600FL, were weight savings and handholding ability. I can handhold my 500FL for long periods of time with some rest in between shots. I also can easily use it on my very sturdy monopod, the ProMediaGear TR42ML which is a beast...42mm diameter and 81in height. These lenses are very expensive, but ask anyone who has bought one or multiple, I've had about 8 super-tele lenses over the years, and myself and anyone else you ask do NOT regret it. Ask anyone who has emptied their bank account or kids college fund and they will admit its very much worth it, lol.

Hiya Tom. A new 600/4 is out of the question for many of us mere mortals with short arms & shallow pockets ! But I seem to have found a workaround to be able to afford some top-draw glass. As I'm sure you know, there are some serious bargains to be had on F mount kit these days, as lots of people are migrating/upgrading to mirrorless & the Z mount. I have spent a lot of time thinking about whether I should follow suit, or not. You see, having already invested a lot of money in F mount glass, upgrading everything I own to Z wasn't ever going to be affordable. So I made a compromise decision. I decided I will (eventually) invest in a Z7 II body. But use a F2Z adaptor so I can use my F glass collection. In the meantime I pounced on a couple of dream lenses I never imagined I'd ever be able to afford. The first was a 600/4G mint condition from MPB. Then a couple weeks later another opportunity came along. This time a 400/2.8G from Park Cameras again mint condition. Total spend £7k. As you know, to buy these two lenses 'brand new' would have cost £13k each (yikes !) Which isn't really an option for most of us, unless you happen to be David Beckham. I guess all I wanted to point out to people reading, is - there are some bargains around if you're willing to compromise a little & settle for G glass / use an F2Z adaptor. Which is exactly what I will be doing when I have enough in my depleted foto kitty to fund a Z7 II. Until then I'll keep on using a couple of trusty old workhorses .. an old D810 & a D750. Happy snapping ! :-)

I think optically nothing is ever going to be significantly better than that lens ever. However the older, heavier AF-S lenses are reportedly about as good, even the non-stabilised AF-S models at a tenth the price used for amateurs. Wonderful video.

Awesome as always Tom, good to see that beast in action! would you say a very good condition D3s is a better option than a heavily used D850 with 125K shutter actuations?
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
In regards to the cameras if the D850 is heavy used BUT with a scratch free sensor, fully working etc, I'd probably go with that over the D3s. Reason is the D850 is so flexible, low light is really good to about ISO 3200/6400 but also the resolution is amazing for detailed images, cropping etc - although factor in you will want the battery grip + D4 batteries for the 9fps... All round its a beast. If low light is what you do the D3s might be better, but the AF is more outdated and the sensor tech not as solid as the D850. The reason I bought a D4 was SPECIFICALLY for low light work, but If I could only have one camera the D850 would be in my hand.

Hi Tom, great video as always. What are your thoughts on the fl versions of the 400 f2.8 and 500 f4? Would you choose any of them over the 600 as they are slightly cheaper and lighter lenses or would you still go with the 600?
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Ben you're trying to read my mind, they are all things I'll be weighing up, need to test the 400mm 2.8 and see how it fits as I feel it might be more my style than the 600mm. With a TC especially with the Z mount quality ones it would be super flexible and maybe a more all round combination. The 500mm is a great option too, however IDK its just never been my "go to" focal length. I must admit I'm still tempted by the amazing 120-300mm 2.8. However I doubt I could part with my 300mm 2.8!

Great photos Tom and very nice "story," development throughout your video. I definitely understand the appeal of the 600mm f/4E in terms of its image quality and f/4 bokeh, but that lens is a beast when it comes to travel and hikes beyond two miles. The size prevents one from carrying other core gear, and thus one must often decide to shoot with only that and one other lens or leave it home. With your current use of a 300 f/2.8, I'd think the 500PF would make for a nice addition to your bag. Use it on a D500 (for 750mm field of view) or on your D850/D5 when 500mm is needed. I currently use mine on a D500 and leave the 200-400mm f/4 on my Z6II. While I'd gladly trade both towards the 180-400 w/ built in converter, the newest version of the zoom costs just as much as a 600E. The "price to play" becomes a decision between travel or new gear... given the choice, I choose travel every time! Always great to see your work. bruce
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the 500mm FL is certainly worth a consideration and in regards to F mount I'd be keen, however with the Z development and no 500mm fixed on the roadmap just yet I'll have to wait. I certainly think the 500mm would be a good mid ground and using a 1.4 TC my 300mm 2.8 and 500mm f5 combo would give 300, 420, 500 and 700mm on my D850 that would be nice! The 400mm 2.8 also is pulling my gaze, especially as it will likely be the only Z mount super tele I'll be able to fund!

Guessing the Z mount version will be even more expensive ! It's a significant point that a 600mm puts 44% more pixels on the subject than a 500mm that can make a difference if you want frame filling images. I had the 400mm f2.8fl which is perhaps more versatile if you need it for different subjects besides distant wildlife, the 400 performs amazingly well with teleconverters too.
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
The 400 2.8 is another lens I’m Hoping to test out and especially interested for the Z mount. The flexibility will be very nice indeed with TCs. The 600mm certainly makes it’s easier for frame fillers, I’m just waiting, testing and seeing what fits with my style and images I want to make before investing! So I’ll likely do a video on the 400mm at some point!

Good, informative content Tom. Have rented the canon 600mm version in the past, eventually settled on the sigma 150-600mm sport. Found it to be a more versatile lens for hide work, small birds and small mammals, dragonflies and butterflies, also for distant larger birds and mammals. I have to use higher ISOs but the noise can be reduced with practice in Post. Some practice in Post can save you thousands of quid. Have an old 300mm f2.8 for low light situations, astro photography etc Good luck with your Short Eared Owls, you've got some nice images already.

Thanks Tom for another awesome video. I have a Nikon D500 and I would like to get your opinion on which is the best Nikon lens for shooting BIF handheld. Lens weight and fast and reliable AF (both in acquiring and maintaining focus) are key factors for me.
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
My 300 2.8 is great for BIF especially with a 1.4TC for some extra reach, AF is super fast and light enough to hand hold. If you need more reach the 500 PF is a good shout, but the 5.6 can be limiting. Of course with the D500 the 300mm is a 450mm / 630mm with the TC so has some great reach for wildlife work and is a very flexible solution.

Used to use the D500 with 300mm FP (450mm equivalent) very good BIF and doubles as a macro focusing down to around 1 metre

Hi Tom, interesting video. I use the 600mm f4 on a D5 body for cricket photos here in Aus. Have ordered a D6...will be interested on its low light & high ISO performance. I find the 500mm f5.6 PF on the Z7 an interesting combination for wildlife. Keeps me busy in retirement from teaching. Cheers from Aus.

The D5 is a workhorse and I loved using it whilst I was in Botswana. Great for fast action work. The D6 will certainly be a killer with that combo. The 500mm PF is a great lens too and I've enjoyed using it, not really my style as the aperture range but did make me think hard about a 300mm f4 for hiking work, the weight drop is lovely!

Hi Tom, thanks for video, which I enjoyed. Never likely to be spending that sort of money on a lens I'm afraid. I think I know where you have been to see the short eared owls and I have got a few decent shots with my D500 and 500mm pf lens at the same location. Only trouble with that set up is it's not so good when the light goes. Sadly, some photographers at the location have been nailing dead mice to posts and trampling the undergrowth, but I believe the rangers are on the case now, thankfully. Anyway, it's nice to get out for a change!

Yes I have heard of some bad ethics by some people and its a real shame with no need. Having been there for a good few days I had many chances and encounters to shoot great images without needing to do anything other than walk the paths. The 500mm PF for sure is a great walk around lens especially on the D500, I will review at some point, but for me the only issue is that low light ability, Its why my 300mm 2.8 just always comes back to being in my hand!
@IAnneee26
@IAnneee26 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, love to watch your video's! Keep inspiring us in these difficult times. Why did you not use your D4 on the 600mm f4 for the Owl shoot? Its has a much better iso performance than the D850 I have been told. Or did you have to cropped the images and benefit from the 45Mpeg of the D850?
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, depended on the situation really, I used the D850 a lot because the extra res was really nice especially for larger prints that I'll likely be doing. On quite a few of the days the light was great for the D850 and found it worked well, I had the D4 and used in some low light, but mostly as I was returning daily I tended towards the higher res cam and working with the light as it changed. The D850 is pretty good up to around 6400/3200 ISO but for anything passed the D4 is great as the lower MP makes the apparent noise less in the final images. The D4 is super sweet for evening work and night time shoot that hopefully I'll get to do a few more of this year, but for this shoot working from a tripod as well with the 600mm the d850 did great. Also I was there for a good few days and did use the D4 just sometimes I don't video all of my shooting and changes!

Nice one Tom. I have the same setup and noticed that the Gitzo Gimbal will not stay in place and the lens shifted upwards, when I carry it on the back with the tripod. Did you also see that with your Gimbal?
@TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t found that with mine, do you have it balanced fully? Especially on the rise axis, sometimes if the centre of balance isn’t raised the camera will drop. When I was setting for the 600mm and swapping from my 300mm I needed to raise the plate attachment by about 4cm to get it balanced
@simons9952
@simons9952 3 жыл бұрын
I meant only when I carry it (so it is balanced), because it seems that the Gimbal can not lock that tight(I locked it as hard as it is possible, but it seems that with my Version the lens always gets pushed out of the locked position when I carry it like you did. When using it and both knobs are loosen, everything works fine :))
@TomMasonPhoto

Hmm that’s strange, I haven’t had any issues with mine moving about when carrying it. I don’t know if the internal screw maybe loose and then even tightening wouldn’t fully lock the position? I don’t know to be honest, the guys a Gitzo might be able to help!

I do used TC's with the 300mm however only the 1.4 TC III. I have used a 2.0 in the past but just don't find it the best performance especially with my higher MP D850 now, more often the IQ is nicer using the more modern 1.4 TC and then cropping on the D850, also this preserves my f value for better low light shooting and AF speed. @TomMasonPhoto
@TomMasonPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
The old 600mm f4 for sure still had the awesome optics, the larger size just being the downside. In regards to the Z mount for myself it's mainly about video for me, the new optics and Af mechanisms are designed for it and with the decrease in the flange distance the optics can also be perfected especially at the edges allowing for better performance, especially I hope when TC's are in play. I don't think the Z will be double the FL price but I know the increase will be enough that for many it will put them off and for myself I'm still waiting to see how the new 200-600mm lens and 400mm 2.8 look before any final decisions! Enjoy the 600mm f4 and I'm sure on the D500 and D810 its creating some crackers! Cheers, Tom
