I've been watching your videos and really appreciate the work you put into them. I noticed you shoot a lot of your landscapes with the D850 and nature with the Z9. I currently use a D780 for landscapes and a D500 for birding. I was going to get a D850 for my landscape work but would like your opinion if the Z9 would be a good replacement for both the D500 & D850? Thanks for your time and please keep sharing your wonderful videos.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question. Now before I share my thoughts, ever person, situation (finance, camera knowledge...etc) and use in the field is different so regardless of what I say it might not be right for you 🫣🙂 In my opinion the Z9 is a great replacement for the D500 and D850. Even with my F-mount lenses it is slightly faster at auto focus on the Z9 than the D850. Especially if I add my 1.4 TCIII. My D850 is used as a backup or second camera for landscapes while I use the Z9 for filming. Once the Z7 Mark III comes out or a Z8, I will upgrade my D850. I still love the D850 and my wife still uses it when I don't. I hope that makes sense. Let me know what you think and thanks again for the compliments to my video! Cheers

Matt - No I don't have the 500mm PF. I am a Nikon shooter and have the D810, D500 and the 200-500mm lens usually on the D500. Good combination but the lens is on the heavy side. Would like to have the PF but at times having the zoom is a plus. Very sharp lens and usually gives me a decent percentage of keepers. Keep up the good work Matt.

I have a few binoculars that I sometimes/rarely use in the field....but I am not an expert on what binoculars are best to buy. I've used Vortex Crossfire HD, and Nikon's Prostaff binoculars. I have a few Bushnell binoculars kicking around that I sometimes bring along. Sorry I couldn't be more help. It's one more piece of gear I have to lug around when I end up looking through my telephoto lens anyways to view my subject so I ditch the binoculars most days. I am interested to know what you and other photographers use and do in the field. Feel free to share. Cheers!

No the lens is the 500mm f4 G ED. The f5.6 PF is a great lens, super light weight but as long as I can muscle the 500mm f4 around, I am happy with it. Be nice to upgrade to the fluorite lens or even better the new Z mount telephoto lenses. Thanks for the compliments and encouragement. I’m happy I seize the day and walked away with some fun footage and pictures. Do you shoot nikon and use a telephoto too? Perhaps the PF? Curious to hear your thoughts

Great video! I'm just wondering, doesn't the low temperature damage your equipment? I'm always scared that the sudden temperature change would damage my lens.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
Extreme temperature changes will not harm your camera equipment. for ideal optical performance, I do allow my camera equipment (Mostly lens) cool down to the ambient temperature. Especially for astro photography where the shutter is open for a long time and I want the clearest image. Your battery on the other hand can suffer from getting cold so I keep them warm in my pockets and I have spare batteries. Humidity and condensation is what is more concerning than extreme temperature changes. Condensation and moisture can damage your camera and lenses if you are not careful. Moisture can effect electronics. Changing warm lenses outside before letting your gear cool down to the outside temp can cause condensation inside your camera body and on the contact points...etc. I hope that explains some of it. Let me know if that makes sense.

Thanks for watching and the compliments, that means a lot! Still love my D850. D5 is such a great camera too which I’ve used for wildlife before the Z9. I know what you mean with regards to the Nikkor 200-500 f5.6. I still have that lens and my wife uses it from time to time. For the price it is a great lens but you have to turn it so much for that zoom, worry about dirt, image quality at the limits of the lens….it is what it is. Big glass is expensive. You might find a good used 500mm f4 G lens. Heavy but good quality

@Matt Shannon thanks for your reply Matt. To be honest I've not used it a great deal, I need to use it more maybe. I tend to only use it at the long end anyway, hence why I'd prefer a prime. Living in northern Scotland where its dark quite alot, F4 would definitely be an advantage too

Thank you. And yes, 3500 has good specs to get the same results with a sharp lens. The Red wing black bird doesn’t move around much when it is sitting on the cat tails making its call. Plenty of opportunity to practice and take your time if they are in your area around ponds and swamps ☺️

That’s a good question. D500 shoots 4K at 25 and 30fps but 1080p at 60fps so you have options. For a full breakdown on shooting video with the D500, I would read this fantastic post by Jason Polak on D500 videography: jpolak.org/photo/2021/03/04/how-to-set-up-the-nikon-d500-for-video/

@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliments to my shots! A darker background is best for viewing the breath out of the back birds mouth. You wouldn't see much of the breath against a bright background. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any more questions! Cheers

@@MattShannonPhoto if I’m not shooting for the breath out, just the normal bird shooting, is it better the background darker or brighter?
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
@@wongchenjiang641 A brighter background is fine then. It depends on your personal preference. I try to avoid bright sky since it will be blown out against the black bird, but a lighter backdrop would be nice. I hope that makes sense and helps! Thanks for your question.
