So refreshing to hear someone not break physics when speaking about crop factors etc. Too many people seem to think that apsc is somehow magically converting their lenses into something else! Great stuff all round, as per usual Espen.

Recently purchased a used Canon 500mm F4 version 1. When received and not withstanding the DPD driver dropping the box on the road when he opened his van door, when we opened the case the lens was as new as advertised. Sadly when I turned the focus ring something didn't feel right and when attached to 3 different cameras the lens focus kept hunting. The upshot is we returned the lens for repair under warranty but were told that there are no spares available for the version 1 autofocus. The fault is confirmed as common and virtually unrepairable by Lehmanns due to spares problems - £350 for a used part condition unknown from US eBay if they could find one and then no guarantees it would work. Thankfully we managed to get a full refund. I only post this to make folks aware of what they are risking should they buy one - mine cost £3200!

@@EspenHelland Canon only support lenses for 7 years once a mk2 version is released, I had a similar problem with my mk1 500 when I found out about the spare parts issue I had a choice keep the mk1 500 and hope that nothing ever failed or off load it and buy something else, I chose the latter option, tried Sigma 150-600sport couldnt get on with it, did get some cracking shots but doesnt compare to a 500 prime, eventually a fellow togger was selling his 500mk2 at a price I could not turn down and that is where I am now, I normally go out with 5dsr on my 500mk2 with a 1.4x and 5dmk4 with 100-400mk2 for closer stuff.

Frank Anderson No Frank, I didn't do that because Park Cameras who I bought the lens off were very good in offering a full refund or an exchange lens at a discounted price once the fault and prognosis became clear. I decided I couldn't take the risk so I bailed. Sad to not even have taken a single frame with it though and there was not a mark on the lens - truly as new condition except for the fault.

It is a joy to see you photograph ducks and company and see the equipment you are using. Photography can be lonely and it brought in a sense of shared experience and confirmation. I am currently using an EOS 90D which is well worth the trouble. The extra resolution of the sensor adds more than just extra resolution, it adds in a wow factor that is quite unexpected. The images are more vivid, something that can' never be put in by post processing! For example water now comes alive. I use the 90D with the Canon 100-400 L etc., lens. I tried using it with a 1.4 x extender but it slows down the auto-focus too much in less that optimal light to capture fast flying birds (Osprey coming at you head on). I was saving up for the 500 mm but my car just died. But it was very useful to see the comparison!.. Many thanks...

Looks like you had some fun. I was lent the 500 f4 IS II from canon last year, got a free loan here in France through CPS, it's a great beast when you are in a hide but I didn't find the f4 aperture that exciting. In the end I purchased a 300 f2.8 IS II that I use either naked or with a 1.4x and sometimes 2x, I really appreciate the 2,8 aperture, I use a 5d4 and if you can get close enough to your subject the results are stunning. I also have the 100-400 II which is a great lens, it doesn't focus as fast as my prime and sometimes hunts through branches, but the image quality combined with the 5d4 is also wonderful, it also gets used often for landscapes. I recently tested the versions 3 of the 400 2.8 and the 600 f4, crazy light and can definitely be used handheld. But what a price to pay.

I’ll say on your video what I said on Paul's: where’s Trond? I still shoot with my Sigma 150-600mm Sport. I was going to upgrade my lens this summer, but with my health and medication I’m not getting out anywhere near as much as I like. In fact I’ve got my Swarovski scope up for sale. Then I think I might get a 4x5 and a bigger enlarger and try to get more arty shots. I’m keeping the rest of my birding stuff my 5DIII, 7DII and my Swarovski EL 8x32 etc. However, it just ain’t worth keeping the stuff I’ll rarely, if ever, get to use again. Great video, really enjoyed it.

I think your photos are pretty good at all. I have also struggled with various lenses in recent years from the old Sigma 150-500 to Nikon 200-500 / f5.6 and finally a 200-400 / F4.0. It's not always about the lens and the sharpness and the bokeh, but rather the moment and subject you get. Here you show just that and you have great pictures that you should be happy with. But I know how it is. We strive for the perfect.

Tip: If you're using a 7D on the 100-400, you will get better results by NOT using an extender, and cropping. The 5DIV works well with the 1.4 III extender on that lens, but not the 7D.

Hello, I have the Canon 600mm prime and 100-400. I upgraded from the zoom because of the sharpness and autofocus speed you mentioned. Not a lot in it between them though. I have found that carrying the 600mm any distance quickly becomes an endurance test though!

I upgraded from 7D original to 7Dii and use it with ef70-300L IS USM ( which is my go to lenses for almost everything ) and sigma 150-600 contemporary. This gives me some good results then I borrowed a sony A6500 and use sigma mc11 adapter for my ef glass. Wow, the images IMO are slightly sharper than my 7Dii plus the A6500 has 4mp more for cropping in detail retention. From what I have seen from of amateurs set up is that the Nikon D500 is a very Sharpe, has good AF and a good choice for wildlife.

@@ozmid40scouple If I had to buy again if starting out I would go sony even though the lenses are bloody expensive. They are very sharp and probably slightly better than canon. When first started driving my dad said to the best car for him would be a Vauxhall engine in a Ford body. For me with cameras I would like a canon body and menu with Sony sensors, and eye detect that can use sony glass. To be fair canon glass is still probably some the best out there.

The 500mm is one of Canon's sharpest lens check out their MTF chart on this lens. The 100- 400mm mii version it tack sharp as well. Plus it has a four stop stabilization. And combined with a crop body or the newest tele extenders miii 1.4 or 2x images are still tack sharp and increased auto focus points with high end camera bodies. I prefer the Canon 600mm for its reach but I use the 100-400mm mii version as well. Along with 300mm f2.8. 1Dx mii, 5d miv , 5D Sr , and two 7d mii bodies. I have most situations covered. There are times a zoom comes in handy and this zoom allows very close focusing for macro shots. I eliminated my 70- 200mm L lens buying this little useful zoom.

I checked his video as well, you both had great images and videos. Watching on my ipad, the difference in lenses did not stand out to me, both were very good. Was the mat worth it? It seemed to work well for this project. Loved the dog scene, made me smile...lol. I also find the 1.4 makes it a touch softer at full extension, but still great for most things not moving real fast. Might just be me, I’m not that steady handholding, but BIF with the extender seems more difficult to get sharp that I miss more than I gain. (On the crop sensor anyway) Curious what you think!

Do you use both the 500 mm f4 and the 100-400 mm lens. Both in the version II. Camera's are the 1 DX and the 1D Mark IV. In the past the 500 mm was my most used lens, regularly with the 1.4 TC. In case of small birds I do use it on the 1D Mark IV, as this has a 1.3 crop factor. Sharpness and softness of front and background are much better, even with the TC. Mobility is an issue though. In combination with the fact that I do more and more wildlife photography I tend to go out more and more with the 100-400. As I do photograph more and more at night and during the blue hour, I do experience that the 100-400 has its limitations given the f5.6 at 400 mm. Compared to f2.8 on lenses that I sometimes rent like the 400 mm, that is a big difference at night.

Great setup. I've been wondering about the 400mm f2.8 instead of the 500mm f4 and just add an extender when needed. Love the sound f2.8 at 400mm!!

Hi Espen, my 100-400mm Mark II arrived a short while ago and I have been testing it out indoors (it's raining out). Amazing especially compared to my 300mm f4 IS. Photos as sharp and the IS is a lot more effective. I have noticed that the manual focus ring (on my copy) is slightly loose, it moves slightly and I can hear it as if it is hitting against meta when it is gripped or pushed laterally. It turns very smoothly and focuses but the lateral movement does not seem right. How is yours - completely solid or slightly loose?

Paul Bailey mine seems to be the same. I've never actually noticed it before, haven't been an issue for me when using it.

@@EspenHelland Thanks. I've arranged for mine to be returned - it could get worse over time and I always think ahead to the time when I'll want to sell it. I checked my other Canon L lenses and their manual-focus rings are all fit tightly allowing for a smooth turning action. Thanks again for letting me know. Funny this is, the last one they supplied me with had a loose lens mount (physically loose!) - so this is a disappointment especially as it performs very impressively.

Hey there, I got a 7Dii and the 400mm f5.6. I used a Kenko 1,4x TK on this set, making the lens slower of course but i wanted some extra reach. When i compared shots with the TK vs. shots without TK and cropped to the same image I didn't find big differences - a bit more detail with the TK on maybe. With flying birds I got way better results without the TK as the autofocus improved. Can you recommend the 400mm f5.6 (more or less the same as your 100-400 in sharpness) plus the 7DII and TK on? Do you prefer cropping with software or do you prefer the TK to get closer and better results? I was wondering, if the Kenko 1,4 TK is so much worse than the Canon equivalent.

Great video. So for a lot more money the 500mm f4 is just a tad sharper, but probably not that obvious to most people especially depending on size of print or image, and has a creamier bokeh, I suppose at f4 compared to 5.6 or 8 with the TC you can also use a faster shutter speed by allowing more light in with the wider aperture. Seems a lot of money for just those things though, to me the bokeh on the 100-400 looks great and also the sharpness. Don't get me wrong I would absolutely love a 500mm f4, superb lens, but that's what you're essentially paying a few thousand pounds for is a bit better bokeh and a tad sharper, does make me wonder whether I'd pay that much for one.

I'm looking to buy the Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM II lens and I came across your channel. I don't live too far away from the pond where you are now. Don't worry I won't say where it is. You can see the odd deer and bird of prey now and then if you're lucky. Great video as are your other videos. New subsriber here. 👍 Edit: I usually go walking there. Dogs are annoying at the place. You may have seen the bird hide on the side where you were taking photos? well, I've seen dogs charging around within the viewing range of the hide, which I don't agree with, but no one cares.

Hi, very interesting outing and some worthwhile examples. I have just ordered the 10-400mm mark II to use with my 5DM3 and 7D II, but I was wondering about your examples. Because the 7D mark II and the 100-400 would give you a FOVCF of 640mm, using the 1.4 extender would probably degrade the results too much - or do you see it differently?
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul! Yeah I think it degrades the quality using the 1.4x with my setup. I've done a video recently on my thoughts using the extender if you're interested.

@@EspenHelland Thanks, have just viewed that video and it does address all the issues that I would most likely encounter. Based on my experience of using the 300mm f4, with the 7DM2 - where the lens is already hunting for focus on overcast days, I am not surprised by your findings. Keep up the good work and best wishes.

Good video, I subscribe to you both. Dogs, or I should say those owners who have no control over their dogs, are a pain in the bum. When I owned Canon gear I had a 7D mark II, a 70D, 300mm f2.8L IS (secondhand), 100 - 400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II and a TC20III. I always felt that the 100 - 400mm was a great lens but the 300mm was fantastic - even with the 2.0TC fitted. I preferred it to the 100 - 400mm, though it was a bit heavy when handheld. I was never able to justify the expense of a 500mm f4 - even secondhand. It's always a compromise between reach, quality of the image and weight. I now own a Sony A7R4 + Sony 200 - 600mm and this combination is the easily the best I have ever owned - even better than my Sony A9 + 200 - 600mm. Another brilliant combination, which I owned prior to my Sony gear, is a Nikon D500 + Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6.

@@EspenHelland. If you stay with Canon it's a good option because there are secondhand copies of all versions. If you move to Nikon the 500mm f5.6 PF ED VR would be very tasty (I had the 300mm f4 PF ED VR + TC14EIII). Move to Sony and purchase an A7R4 + Sony 200 - 600mm - it's my current set up and is positively outstanding.

Great video, thanks. I understand there is no magic with the crop sensor, but it uses full sensor resolution e.g. 24MP on my Sony. In some Full Frames you can use APSC crop mode but lose half resolution. I'm just starting off the bird photography with limited budget. I am able to do comfortably 50% crop in post for social media of the 24MP photo. I'm using sony 55-210mm with Tcon 17x converter, not an ideal gear, but lot of fun. Merely considering the reach on budget this works best for me. instagram.com/manoj23.86/
