The Beauty of the Unknown - A Perfect Morning's Bird Photography with my camera. One of the joys, and indeed frustrations, of opportunistic nature photography is not knowing what you will encounter in the field - and what wildlife photos you'll get! On this frosty morning I have a particularly exciting photo session - and two very special bird encounters! I'm using a Canon EOS R6 mirrorless camera and Canon 400mm f/5.6 Lens for my photos, with a Black Rapid Strap. Exposure settings vary between AV with Auto ISO and Manual with Auto ISO - I use each technique depending on the natural light conditions.

Man-o-Man, those coots meant business. i've never seen a battle last that long. It looked as if one was going to drown the other.

Very enjoyable, the fighting looked brutal and the Kestrel video was lovely to watch. I'm in the early stages of my wildlife photography journey, using Panasonic G9 and Leica 100-400mm lens. I'm having a lot of fun and getting a few nice rewards. All the best, MMMD

Hey! That 100-400 Leica is a great lens. I started with a canon EF 75-300 myself. Lol. You’ll find yourself shooting at 400mm all the time and that’s when you decide to just get a 400mm prime lens lol. Prime lenses are so awesome when you get into longer focal lengths. 😊

Kestrels always seem to be pointing away. They want the same as us photographers, they want the sun behind them. So we’re all pointing in the same direction.

You need a morning when there is some wind from the east. They may like to look away from the sun, but they sure don't like flying backwards.

I was so worried that one coot was going to hold the other under the surface and drown it! The footage was excellent, as was the hunting kestrel. Love these type of videos because they show wildlife photography as it really is - sometimes frustrating, sometimes very rewarding, often entertaining, but always fun and great to be outside with the camera!

Those Coots were amazing Paul. Any idea if that was two males fighting over females or defending territory? Amazing either way. And the kestrel, icing on the cake.

I've been to that site and got my best Kestrel pics there. They like the big slope that has often has SW winds blowing up it. Great to see coots going at it.

wow, I love it when action occurs!! it gives the impression that the dominant was trying to "drown" the intruder....here in Brazil we have a species very similar to your, "White-winged Coot". thank you for sharing !

Loving the fantasy battle music for the coots haha! As for the kestrel, I recently photographed one catching a vole myself. It was the first time I'd seen one catch prey so I was very excited, especially when I realised I'd got the shot!

Have you tried walking around with your 500/4, the IBIS has made it possible for me to hand hold the R6-500/4 combo which I could never do before. On a Black Rapid strap it’s opened up more possibilities for me………….. 😁 Crazy Coot fight, I thought one of them was going to be drowned by the other for sure.
