Great video Paul, I will be their Monday 20th with the very same goal as yours, birds in flight. And may go for some BIH shots you seem to have invented (bird in hop). I also hope to do some reflection shots with my Z9 and autocapture. Looking forward to it rain or shine.

Hi Vic. LOL.. Bird in Hop shots! Yes, there were lots of hopping and diving - that seems very characteristic of Jays. Best of luck in the hide. If autofocus struggles, I would just manually focus on a perch and fire when bird lands or takes off. Thanks for the support.

I was at the hide today Paul (my 4th visit) plenty of Jay action plus Thrushes, Woodpeckers, Finches (even a Bullfinch too far away) and many others. Thank you for the video it is helpful. I now have many pictures to work through. Unfortunately the Sparrow Hawk didn’t appear today but I have been privileged with a decent visit previously and have some good pictures as a result.

Excellent. Sparrowhawks are definitely around but not guaranteed they'll land. The male last year was incredible!

Really appreciate that. Yes, this kind of subject is tricky. I can't tell you how erratic the jays were at times!

Very nice video again. At my local reserve I often try to take photos of Kingfishers diving and in flight needing a high shutter and hence high ISO. When the birds perch, I try to remember (meaning that I often forget!) to drop the shutter speed to also reduce the ISO to get a cleaner image.

That is exactly what I do! And yes, it's a case of remembering at times

Great “down to earth” video as usual. I didn’t realise that the zone focus was able to track birds so well. Will now be giving that a go instead of my usual standard tracking setting.

Very useful video, and nice to see it's not just me that gets fuzzy out of focus shots sometimes. I've not tried the focus zone you were using on my R6, but I think I'll give it a go for birds sometime soon.
@PaulMiguelPhotography

Thanks Paul. Honestly, that focus option works really well for me. It's now my default for BIF.
@ScottRitchie-bw9ls
@ScottRitchie-bw9ls 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for that Paul. I love your "straight talk", or "straight shot" approach. Let's face it, BIF is fun, a lift. But mostly fails. But a fun game. I use a dot sight to get the ibrd in the frame. Then its the AF's fault if its not sharp.
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 7 ай бұрын
Cheers, appreciate that! It can be fun.. these days I am trying to enjoy it more and not worry as much about getting 'perfect' results. What is 'dot sight'?
@ScottRitchie-bw9ls
@ScottRitchie-bw9ls 7 ай бұрын
It';s an external "gun sight" that allows you to place a dot over the target. You can keep both eyes open, and as it is not "through the camera lens", very easy to locate and track the bird. I use PGD Tracker. Check out videos on it. @@PaulMiguelPhotography

Love watching your channel. Been watching for around a year or so. Wondered about your lens option for bird photography I was looking at the ef 400mm f5.6 for my r6. Or would you recommend the 300mm f4 IS and a 1.4x extender. Thanks Craig.
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 7 ай бұрын
Thank you so much. Personally I would go for the 400mm. You can get one for about £500 these days.

I have an R6 and only use manual focus for macro now. Modern cameras focusing is fantastic but I think we get used to it and sometimes we expect too much. I think having high expectations is good and driven by the desire to get the image we have in mind. I have had issues with rolling shutter on the background when panning , following birds in flight at high speed , sometimes the wing tips look a bit odd on small birds and on insects in flight when using electronic shutter. Thanks for the vid, inspiring and informative as always
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for this. I've never had that background problem so far, but it definitely happens. Yes, we can expect too much, I agree. Rolling shutter is a good example of how nothing is every perfect! I'm going to try use mechanical a bit more often now.

Hello, a pro-capture function is very useful for photos like this. I also think it`s great that you show that even a professional doesn`t just take perfect photos.
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 7 ай бұрын
Thank you. I think many of us should probably show our failures more. Yes, absolutely, pro-capture would help, it must be great for take off shots, and sudden interactions between birds.

I presume you utilize double back button focus, however I wonder what focus mode you select for each focus button. I have never used focus group and you briefly mention it in the video. Can you elaborate?
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 7 ай бұрын
Hi there. I have never got on with back button focus. I tried it again when I got the R6 but I have now gone back to shutter button focus. I love it and it works great for me. I use the back button to disengage / lock the focus. I will try to make a video including this at some point.

Hi. I’ve just watched your video on Jay photography. I see you are using the ef lens, please were you able to get the maximum fpm in mechanical and electronic, I am thinking of the R6 mk1 , and I can’t seem to get a definite answer the ef lens will reach full fpm .I have the ef L series lens ,70-200, 300,and 400. And hope they will be compatible with both maximum fpm Many thanks. Bob.
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 3 ай бұрын
Hi there. Its difficult to get a definitive answer. I use my EF 500mm and EF 400mm with R6 mark i and you only get around 7 or 8 fps max. with mechanical shutter. Electronic shutter cannot be changed, it's fixed at 20 fps, works fine with my lenses.. If you check Whistling Wings photography he also talked about this in a video.

To be honest Dslr were more reliable and single point autofocus always win for me. Do you still own 1Dx.? I am thinking to buy used 1dx ii with my 6D II.

I still have the 1DX yes, and I will give it an outing for a video at some point. Amazing cameras and built like a tank. But I do enjoy the benefits of my R6
