Well done sir. Excellent content showing your journey. My first spring providing a blue bird house. I was sort of forced to do what I wanted to do anyway - a pair of bluebirds kept making a nest in our dryer vent. I set the b.b. house near the vent, they went right for it. I really feel joy to have them as neighbors. Happy to provide a house for them. Thank you for this content

You are so clever to build a home meeting all the birds’ needs. All the details! Well done! (A number of years ago, my late husband and I built a bluebird house. Before we had even gotten the post securely in the ground, a bluebird couple was moving in!)

I wish everybody were as thoughtful as you. I see so many birdhouses that are wrong or in wrong spots. A birdhouse should always be on the north/north-east side (of the building or the tree trunk that it's attached to). Never on a pole that would be fully exposed to the sun. That's like leaving your kid in a hot car in summer...

Just building this years round of bird houses and found your channel from Lesley. This is a really well designed house! I built some houses a few years ago where I scorched the outside for weather protection, but then was concerned about the charred outside heating the box up too much, so I also added a floating roof. Seemed to work.

Thanks so much for your info...Leslie Bird nerd suggested your video. I love our swallows that nest here each year. but last year we had very unusual heat dome, 120* three days in row and I knew I'd loose my 5-6 nesting babies like had happened a decade prior when we had temps up to 100*...but this 120* was epic but I was determined to keep my babies alive....so I placed bags of ice on top of the bird house every 2-3 hours and it kept the nest cool. But wasn't easy starting at 5am, and on into the middle of the night....I'm disabled with serious arthritis, so isn't easy getting up, then walking over 100 feet to where I have the nest on a wall outside my deck....it was here when we moved here 8 yrs ago, is a miniature vintage travel trailer w a tin roof...perfect for conducting cold air. But i'm determined to NOT let these unusual heat waves destroy my baby birds as it had happened over a decade ago in a home 2 doors up from us...I was beyond distraught finding all 6 babies dead when we had over100+* temps At the time I have 2 swallow families started....one is a nesting box, but I'm worried about excessive heat thats forecasted for this year. I know its not allowed to promote ones YT ch, but maybe you'd be interested in my docu/videos of putting ice on top, to keep them cool.

@@BirdsWalkingDown My husband and I both agree your modified birdhouse is very NICE. I'm sure your birds love you for it. Is the hardware cloth on the bottom also a preventative against the bottle flies larvae? Or some fly? All I remember is they can't crawl up and feed off of the baby chicks if it's there. Maybe you know what I'm trying to talk about? lol Anyway your plans are on my dear hubs To Do list for this winter. Thanks so much for sharing the detailed plans. Some of the PA birds will be able to keep their cool now too.

TY for sharing this & what you have learned from all of your hard work & dedication. My husband is going to be making some bird houses as gifts (& for us). I will share this with him for sure!! May I ask... the slanted roof; is it wide open at the top other than where the roof is attached? You mentioned another piece of wood? Is that part of the roof? And, do you think it would be of any help to attach a piece of screen over the opening of the roof angle to keep bugs &/or debris from bothering the chicks, etc? Or would screening be a hazzard? Thank you again for your insight! 👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙋‍♀️🐦🐣🌞
@BirdsWalkingDown
@BirdsWalkingDown 3 жыл бұрын
I am working on detailed plans which I'll be posting on birds.walkingdown.com. But yes the roof is open other than where it s attached. The second piece of wood is small and encloses the top of the birdhouse. The roof is attached to that piece. I haven't needed a screen but maybe I don't understand what you mean. The birds general take care of any bugs that go in there. I'll let you know when the plans are on the website.

I like your ingenuity. I like that you're thinking about the importance of box temperature. I think it may be more complicated for the average landlord than is needed. They may not want to tackle it because of that. Personally, I've had luck with a simple cypress box that has a 31 sq. in. floor which appears to be 40% larger than your floor. (Your floor is 4" x 5.5".) This allows the nest cup to be constructed away from the frame if the bird desires, keeping them warmer in winter while allowing older nestlings to move away from each other on hot summer days since nestlings need to spread their wings to dissipate body heat. The addition of large white roof and 1/2 inch vents along the length of each side (which can be closed with clear tape or plastic on cold days allowing light in while reducing drafts) keep the nestlings cool as cross ventilation slots have been shown to do in studies. A second entrance hole can be easily added to a larger box, too, increasing light, enhancing feeding efficiency, while adding a safety measure. Thank you for taking heat into consideration. A natural cavity is cooler because the walls are thick. We should mimic a natural cavity by keeping it cooler, too.

I don’t have a 3D printer. I have seen your video for the plexiglass glass. Would you recommend. Say spray painting the plexiglass say a light pale white or grey transparent so then the birds wouldn’t be confused and try to exit through the clear plexiglass. Or since I’m not using a camera would u need to have any way of the house to be lighter inside??

Hello, I just bought a bird box and I have a blink camera, but the only way to place the camera is by sticking it to the ceiling because the height of the entrance did not allow me to use a camera mount, but after seeing your video you gave me the idea of the false ceiling for the camera, and I am going to have to adapt that.
