Biréli Lagrène is a French guitarist and bassist. He came to prominence in the 1980s for his Django Reinhardt-influenced style on the guitar, as well as for being a jazz fusion virtuoso on the electric guitar. He often performs within the swing, jazz fusion and post-bop mediums.

when Pat Martino was 14 years old he went to see Wes Montgomery in some club in N York and then he met him at his Hotel and Pat was asking him questions about modes and scales and licks etc and Wes answered hi" i cannot answer your questions just listen what i am playing " see sometimes a musician cannot say some improvisations secrets that took years of practice to discover. and i respect what Birelli said

I used to work at the bar in the Pizza Express jazz club in London. When Birelli would do week residencies he'd just hang out with the staff in the local late night coffee shops after work. Just like another member of staff. Just a nice down to earth guy.

This is an amazing example of how when someone has a truly gifted mind that was born to do this, everything just naturally flows to him quickly without much thought or hesitation. A highly advanced musicial mind that wasn't trained in school with years of fundamentals and theory is a special gift from God.

A God that Bireli and all in a disarming modesty! He may not know how to explain what he does, but he feels it with all his heart and knows how to play it ... unlike some who can explain well what to do but are unable to play it!

I think what Bireli has and those like him is something akin to a photographic memory. The only thing is he can hear something just once and pretty much knows exactly where on a guitar fretboard to go and pick it out to duplicate it. You saw him do that twice here. In a very crude fashion most people can listen to a very simple melody line on a song and repeat it by voice. I’d venture as he’s learned chord positions the biggest key I think is first to get an ear trained so for one note; such as C you know the sound of it as a Cmaj, Cmin , C7th, Cdm etc, etc, etc. Once you learn or can hear those flavors it applies to all the rest of the notes. It will also give you scales based off this. The other thing is being able to hear in your head the harmonizing notes and going to a fretboard to pick those out instantly.

Over D major he was thinking G# (Ab) MAJOR pentatonic....tritone sub...not f minor. Subtle difference, but evident if you consider how easy it is to "see" the b5 on the guitar.
@DCMusicSchool
@DCMusicSchool 7 жыл бұрын
no, Fm pentatonic is a common sub for D7 not D major, it's a derivative of the altered scale. Doesn't have much to do with tritone sub, although the tritone sub can be found within the altered scale as well. Last but not least, Fm pentatonic is the same as Ab major pentatonic, so it really doesn't matter what it's called. But Bireli often uses an Fm shape when using this concept

A lot of people can give a technical explanation of what bireli is playing. A very small handfull might be able to improvise at his level.Lagrene is not bound by theory. Describing music is not playing music. Django was illiterate, yet he invented a guitar style to this day, guitarists worldwide, aspire to play.

Watch George Benson talk about playing - it's the same thing. It's not that he doesn't know, it's that it's intuitive and he can't articulate it with a bunch of Jazz math. Benson will say, "And then, you know, you go 'bo be bo be do do do be doooo, blop dooooooooo...over the 5th. Then you can always make it go bleeeeeee if you'd like." - that's literally his lesson :)

Amicalement, Didier. Bireli don't know the name of scales and cadences he plays !! In short, basically, he doesn't know written music theory or barbarous names of what he plays ?? It's been a long time since I know that, for many discussions with him when he came to play at "Funambule", jazz bar in fashion in Strasbourg (France) in the 1980s - 90s. But, is it really necessary to know it all to play an instrument, whatever it is ?? He managed to free himself from all these unnecessary information for him, so that we have a cluttered brain. He preferred to train and lead his ear, which is, in my opinion, the most important. He knows more about music theory and its application on the neck of a guitar than many others guitarists. No need to know the name of a given scale to play well, proof !! For this and many other reasons, it has become, for me, the best jazz guitarist of his generation. I salute you Mr. Bireli Lagrene. Sincerely, Didier.
