According to historical sources viking armor had some influence from Byzantine Empire and Kyivan Rus since some vikings were mercenaries in both. In common conception lamellar armor was the most popular among nomadic tribes of Middle East. Lamellar armor is made of steel scales fixed by leather laces. Each scale is overlapping next one. Finally each line of scales is overlapping a line above. Apparently that the authentic lamellar armor plates were fixed with leather laces, but we use a paracord lace because this material significantly increases the life of the equipment. With paracord you can be sure no steel scale will be lost.
Our Birka lamellar armor consist of eight lines of steel scales. It is equipped with leather straps and buckles on the back part.
Edges of outside steel plates are bordered with leather. Shoulder lines of scales are fixed on the piece of leather because this part gets the weight pressure of all lamellar armor.

I can think of at least one Lombard piece (a silver bowl) that has a warrior in lamellar armor, I would guess they got the technique or even the suits themselves from the Huns or the Avars. Must have been revolutionary, after so many centuries of imported mail or no armor at all! Amazing video, thank you.

guys change the direction of the lamelling, you need to glance of the hit and not jam into the plates.. also a cut to the cord can lead to a complate fail of the armor connections with the next blow You need to cover the lower cord and connect the plates on the top like montain pattern.

Tell me your opinion please: For making an armor meant to resemble steppe nomads, would you recommend these A-shaped plates. I was thinking about D-shaped plates but am getting the impression that those were typical rather for Norse and Rus.

There are variety of shapes of the plates that have been found during the excavations.

There are so many different varieties of lamellar plates around the world that it is hard to keep track of. For example, an excavation of a Han Dynasty tomb resulted in finding more than half a dozen different types of lamellar plates. So that is over half a dozen different types of lamellars found in a single tomb alone. Thus, I would not be surprised if various European, steppe peoples, Middle Easterners, etc also used many different types of lamellars.
