Before the fabled pony car first hit the streets a team of Ford designers and engineers was assembled to create a concept car to test the public's interest in a sporty new car. One of the treats in the video is seeing Phil Clark at work on the original Mustang logo. We also see Clark hard at work shaping the clay on the buck and his sketches adorn the walls of the studio. It's a tribute to an extremely gifted designer who died when he was only 32 but left behind a legacy of automotive design and a daughter, Holly, who's dedicated to making sure the world remembers her father's contribution to the Mustang.
This Ford PR film captures the inside story of the team's efforts that put the first Mustang on the road.

what the heck does this prototype have to do with the real mustang that rolled out from assembly lines, different engine,different body style and materials it's a totally different car.

Yeah its a different car. There is one thing they kind of kept. This car had a real scoop on the side. Mustang have that scoop shape in the body.

After Lee Iacocca witnessed crowd reaction to this prototype, he discovered that it appealed mainly to car nuts and not the market segment that Ford was looking for. Plus, Ford realized how much more profitable a 4 seater is to John Q. Public after changing the T-Bird to a unibody 4 seater in '58 and finally making a profit with it (Ford almost dropped the T-bird after 55-57 production!). FWIW, FoMoCo sectioned a first gen. Falcon to design the Mustang unibody. FWIW, I owned a '67 Mustang convertible, a '65 Mustang notchback, a '67 Falcon Sports Coupe and a '63 Falcon Tudor Sedan (sold in 2018 in Hemmings). (Sigh!) The '70's and 80's were the good old days, when one could buy a rebuildable car for less than $1,000 and expect it to last awhile, before planned obsolesence, gov't emissions, crash tests, mileage and corporate greed took over the auto industry!:(-John in Texas

People wonder what happened to the original Mustang design? Lee Iacocca "value engineered" a cheap replacement by using a falcon frame and components and slap a T-Bird like body over it and sell it cheap. Capitalist success and basically crap with a fresh wrapper.
@TheGearhead222
@TheGearhead222 4 жыл бұрын
The Falcon outsold Corvair and Valiant by a huge margin! The only thing hurting Falcon sales were Mustang sales. Remember also that Falcon and Mustang were MUCH less $ cars than most of what GM offered and offered ALOT of value for the $-John in Texas

I just read where someone posted that Ford never stopped making the Mustang like Chevy did the Camaro. Let's be honest and admit that Ford did stop making the Mustang from 74 to 78.
