HBD! I have a friend in Queens, and we've gone down to visit her a bunch over the years and always made it a priority to go to different indie bookshops. Our last trip happened to be last month, and we went to Book Are Magic (owned by Emma Straub), Books of Wonder (YA), The Mysterious Bookshop (mystery), The Astoria Bookshop (small but good), and Greenlight Books (Fulton St was well curated). It was a very busy trip, but we've also gone to The Strand, McNally Jackson, and a couple used bookstores. And of course, B&N lol.

I can’t wait to see your content on exploring independent NYC book stores and reading the book that strangers are reading on the subway! Your content always encourages me to pick up whatever book I’m currently reading and get back to it! 😁💜 Here’s a suggestion for you since buying books new in America is so expensive: explore your local thrift stores, second-hand book stores, and libraries when sourcing your reads. A lot of American thrift shops have some very cheap book sections that have a few gems every once in awhile. The big chain thrift stores like Goodwill usually require quite a bit of digging for a good read, but family-owned thrift and antique stores generally have some really cool and easier finds (just keep in mind that the prices vary from dirt cheap to bank breaking depending on the store). I recently bought a twenty volume series printed in 1910 that was still in good condition for $20 at a store like this, so you really never know until you look around a bit. In America, you can sometimes even barter in an independent thrift shop when you’re buying a bulk amount of books. I just wanted to point this out since bartering is not a common American practice and should not be done at the big chain thrift stores where the prices are set. Second hand book stores, while a lot like thrift store book sections, tend to gravitate towards the middle of the pack price wise. A common American chain for second hand books is Half Price Books, but most family owned book stores sell them second hand as well. They’re generally cheaper than Barnes & Noble but more expensive than most thrift stores. Lastly, libraries. A lot of American urban areas have a pretty good selection of libraries. If you are staying in America for any amount of time, I’d recommend getting a library card because they’ll give you access to all of the libraries in your city/county. And sometimes you can even have a librarian put your card from a neighboring library region into their system so it’ll work for that library region as well. In America, with the price of new books being insane, I’m surprised that American booktubers don’t often mention library hauls or finds. Especially since in a lot of cities they’re eliminating charges for late books as long as you return them. 🤷‍♀️ Also, most library regions (whether done by city or county) have websites that you can browse their entire collection on, and when you request a book at your nearest library they’ll get that book to that library for you so you don’t need to travel to a far away library to get it. This might be standard outside of America as well, but I just figured I’d mention it because I really love this feature of requesting books. 😄 Hopefully, these suggestions and explanations help you and any other travelers better traverse America’s book buying scenes without breaking your wallets. Sorry for the long explanation. 😅

Woo, for once I’ve read a book before seeing it on Jack’s channel! Also happy birthday🥳 I bought Tokyo Ueno Station because the cover was so pretty and I too love Japanese literature, but sadly it didn’t live up to my expectations:/ It wasn’t bad by any means, but I found it a boring reading experience even though the ideas and themes were so interesting.

If you would like find more bookstores (in Brooklyn) theres actually a nice couple ones (also barnes and nobles!) that goes between 7th ave-prospect park. They are a bit smaller to be honest but they're so nice and the staffs are so sweet and heartwarming
