Bisbee, Arizona - The Massive Lavender Pit, Mine Tours, & A Sad Historical Event. Bisbee is a small town located on the southeast corner of Arizona only eleven miles from Mexico. Historically, it was founded as a mining town in 1880. It was once the third largest town in Arizona Territory. Now it has less than 5,000 residents.
There have been many mines in the area, which eventually became quite productive. Most mines are not currently in production, but that can change at any time. This led to several massive open pit mines, as well as underground shafts. In 1917, miner went on strike for better conditions. The mine company and the local sheriff "deported" the strikes 200 miles into New Mexico to get rid of them. They were threatened with arrest if they returned to the town. A Presidential Commission later determined this to be totally without merit. This was called the "Bisbee Deportation".
