Thanks to Bishop for lending me the skis and bindings. The Bishop BMF it can be a NTN binding or a 75mm binding. And you can choose the BMF-R to add a free pivot for touring por standard, the BMF3.
Telemark bindings have evolve a lot in the last few years and the BMF line compete directly with 22Design's Outlaw X and AXL binding.
If you want to learn more on how tro telemark, visit my website. I have create a series of tutorials that teachs all you need the learn the sport. From beginners to expert, from the basic turn to the hard to master mogul field, I got you covered.

Great Review Rene! I have three pairs of Bishop skis and bindings, one pair of the Chedi, a pair of Gonzo's, and just got a pair of the new Tele-ark Gonzo's for the 21-22 season. I love these skis...and Kate and Dave at Bishop give you like instant help and service. The small size and resulting friendliness and integrity of this company is incredible, and is one of the primary reasons I am such a fan. As a +70 skier, having telemarked for 40 years now, their technological advances have made it possible for me to keep skiing like I was still just 50! Their skis and bindings are secure, responsive, and undeterred in any conditions. I am a Bishop devotee for sure!

Thanks for your comments. I ‘ll be turning 70 this year and haven’t been on my Atomic TM22’s and G3s in four years! Itching to return to the mountains again next year so I’m looking at all the new (to me) stuff out there. Love my old Garmont Synergy 75mm so sticking with those. At my age also sticking with Vermont resort skiing. This review is very helpful. Thank you both.

Thanks Rene ! I have a pair of the BMF3's sitting here waiting for my new planks to arrive. I've wanted Bishop bindings since I saw a pair 15 years ago - your review just confirms my choice ( and bias ) - but I appreciate the time and effort it takes to put these together.

Hi Rene, Great review. I have the first generation 2017/18 season BMF/3 (non touring) 75mm . Have roughly 80 days over the past two seasons on them. Have had similar issues with the 'Brake Lock' and the Toe cages cracked or broke apart.... Bishop took care of the issues. Purchased the 3rd generation Brake Lock last week . Bishop claims the design is 3-4 times stronger (beefier design ) .They may be right . Skiing the binding is really nice. Lateral control is as close to 100% , as a 75mm can get. If you're coming from an older style 75 mm binding, you'll be in for a shock (as Ben Gordon says below ). Sloppiness is essentially eliminated. But you'll learn to appreciate this very quickly. The binding has improved my skiing and and styles ! From a mid stance, sometimes low , to a high stance . Always under the powerful control of the Bishop BMF-3 . Couldn't be happier. As Bishop says.' Go forward and shred' .

So I made my first turns on my BMF 3's last night - 3cm of fresh on groomed. If you're coming to these like me, having only skied on non frame bindings ( Cobras, Chillis, O3's ), there is some serious adjustment to the feel and particularly stiffness. I'm guessing Rene's demo bindings had seen a lot of prior use, but the first couple of runs, the springs on mine felt like they had to " bed in " to loosen up. Five groomers later and the feel was there, I may yet buy the softer springs but realise there is a need to give these a longer session ( tomorrow :) ), and obviously allow for poor technique. The step in part is everything rene describes. I love it.

Ben Gordon thanks for the input. Great point. Not sure the bindings break in. It might just be you getting used to them.

@@Absolutetelemark Hi Rene - I had a longer ski yesterday, and it feels more " natural " now, and the bindings perform great - but I still maintain it took a few turns to get the springs to loosen up the first time out. I have the softer spring kit coming, and if the snow stays long enough, I'll let you know how they feel - 20 degrees on the North Shore today, not sure how long the local hills will be open.

@@bengordon2330 , how are you feeling about the BMF 4 years later? I've been on Meidjo 2.0 for a bit now and am fed up with how finicky they are, and they are really hard to step into (especially with the brakes). Looking to get a new pair of bindings and was leaning towards OUtlaw X then found out they can break, fairly easily. THanks for any thoughts.

Hey Rene. I will send you some info I have on them. Back then their innovative design really blew me away. They had issue with the first models made of aluminum but later corrected using stainless. Then they just disappeared. Very strange but i think someone bought them out and off the market. They didn’t incorporate brakes tho. I would like to get a good lightweight touring setup and have been looking into the voile switchback (x2). Def Like the idea of the medjio alpine heel lock down for those ‘holy crap’ nfz cols!!

Awesome turns Rene as always. I was wondering about the mounting position on bishops skis. Were you on their tele boot center mark? Or did you go 1-2cm further back? More of a ball of foot on chord type of thing? Thank you for your time. I hope this finds you well.

I am so confused now.... :D. I was sure after 25 years on 75mm I was going to move from 75mm to NTN with Meidjo 3 or OutlawX. Now I suddenly have 2 more things to consider. Still change to NTN but with the BMF's or stay in 75mm and go with BMF.

Welcome to the club, I've been trying all these binding with the same dilema. 75mm is great. I love it. But still I ski most of my days with the Meidjo, the BMF (NTN) or even the rotofella Freedom. In the end, It's a great time for telemark, we never had as much choice to make

Hi Rene, Thank you for this review (and others you have done). Do you know if the Bishop will release a new binding next year (their website show no binding available). Also, in your video, you mentioned that the Chedi and Gonzo are telemark-only skis. What is the difference between skis and tele-specific skis?
@Absolutetelemark
@Absolutetelemark 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know about any new release for next year. This is a small company. They might just be out of the stock they had in production for this year. But really, I don't know. For the skis, this is actually a very good question. This season (2020) Bishop released another version even more tele specific with assymetrical radius on each side of the ski. This is not new, G3, Scottybob and probably other brands had that. The point is that, in general, skiing is skiing and that one ski used for alpine or telemark usually have similar feelings . Back in the days, a lot of companies had tele specific skis. This was mainly marketing in my mind. But in the last few years, the shape of the skis have gone in many directions that are not the best for telemark; like shalow tips that barely lifts from the snow; or full rockered banana skis. In those shape, I found similarly shaped skis that skied super good to terrible. I wanted to point that I like the fact the Bishop offers and combo ski and binding that we know is going to work good.

Rene, really super review! Very thorough. The only thing you didn’t cover is releasability. Any idea how likely they are to release in a bad wipeout? My Outlaw Xs have never released, even though a couple of times I wish they would have (as this is my first season tele and I am spending some time on my butt, especially learning fakie!) Thanks from SoCal!
@Absolutetelemark

Well they are not rated to release. Not are the Outlaws. so this would be hard to test as my expertise is more hands on skiing and not much engineering. But except for the Meidjo, no NTN binding have adjustable releasability.

Thanks Rene. Ive been considering the BMF-R in a 75mm for a while for BC touring but your comment about weight has me concerned. Plus I have been skiing Linken’s for 20yrs with a very easy step in and have had zero issues on piste or off. Albeit with leash and no brakes. Im having a hard time justifying the cost. With a background in industrial design i do believe these are well engineered!

Thanks for the great review! I have a question for the whole crew about the step-in feature. I have about 20 days on my BMF-Rs. Theycski great, but I have trouble with the step-in. When I step down, the heel lever doesn’t seat all the way down on the heel rand of the boot. I have to bend down, pull up on the heel lever to pop the other end of it down, and then pull up the safety lock. I have Garmont Syner-G boots. Anyone else have the same issue, or a solution? Thanks!

Hello Geoff, it might be adjusted too tight. Try to adjust the back heel.
@bengordon2330
@bengordon2330 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff - I have a similar issue with my Garmont Ener-G's. I have the binding all the way to the back ( mondo 30.5 boot ), and though I can step in, I have to close the heel piece all the way with my pole before closing the safety lock. Not a big issue for me - it might be garmont related, I will try moving the heel piece forward one notch, and will let you know how that works.
@bengordon2330
@bengordon2330 5 жыл бұрын
So I moved the heel piece forward a notch, possibly two, so that the fit is really snug, but the binding now closes all the way when I step in - as Rene mentions, I suspect your adjustment for length is either too loose or too tight. Bishop do mention that this might be an issue in their quick start guide that comes with the bindings - so its an inconvenience, but not a problem, I hope. Good luck
