Not true. When I was in Yellowstone a few years ago, a guy got laid out by a bison and then got fined for being too close. They have signs posted all over the place there that you need to stay 20+ yards away from the animals. And 100+ from predators

Yellowstone is not a zoo. This is their habitat, and signs are posted everywhere. Im pretty sure the only way a Bison will get put down there is if it attacks multiple ppl unprovoked. Otherwise it's fair game and is natural selection for the weak minded there. Tread lightly 🤷‍♀️💯 Heck ppl burn in the thermal ponds, springs, whatever ya wanna call em, quite frequently too 🤦‍♀️

I can know that we are at the beginning of a new dark age when there is so much human self-loathing on such loud, ostentatious display. "I'm always rooting for the wildlife." The only time I'm tempted to 'root for the wildlife' is, perhaps, when I hear a recording of that one-time celebrity human self-hater, Timothy Treadwell, being noshed on by his grizzly bear friends. Ever see that Werner Herzog documentary about him -- what was it called, "Grizzly Man"? Were you rooting for the wildlife then? ...You have to. You know that Timothy would want you to. (So sad about his naive girlfriend though.)

I used to work remotely and the first year I got on my site I had Bisons around (fenced in from distant farmers). I was walking my dogs and that Bison charged me from quite the distance. When I say "a fence", I'm being generous. It was more like a fragile little rope. Really scary. Horses did the same thing as well, they ran fast towards me and I got scared too 😅. I couldn't help but imagine how terrifying it must have been to participate in Napoleonic warfare and having hundreds of Warhorses charge you. Anyway the Bison got to know me over time and I was able to approach and pet him. He wasn't wild after all. This one time there was also a baby Bison that got stuck on my site going trough the "fence". I scared him back the right way. It was great experience but yes, Bisons are scary, I would never approach a wild one.

@Zek Kiel I know what you mean, but I must admit I myself am an animal lover and mostly a HUGE cat lover, as you can see on my channel. If I was near a tiger or jaguar and they seemed calm just sitting etc, I would have an immensely difficult time not walking up slowly and attempting to pet them. But yes, I know it is super foolish and I would have to refrain. After all, just look at what happened to Sigfred and Roy, or one of them, can't remember which.

I sat in my car because it's the smart thing to do - it's what the park regulations suggest. What I am saying IS true and it's our laws, parks, and rangers who are trying to make people responsible. EVERY PIECE OF LITERATURE IN YELLOWSTONE advises visitors to stay clear of the bison. My point - EXACTLY - is that when people provoke animals by approaching them against safety regs, the animals end up suffering for doing exactly what they are supposed to do - be wild animals.

The National Park Service recommends staying at least 25 yards away from bison and elk and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves. A yard is 3 feet. Are these people 15 feet or 5 yards apart from this large, dangerous beast? This same distance also applies to a bison that is lying down. The saying “quick as a cat” applies to bison. Since the mountain is wide-open, these animals are used to being in plain sight, so people think they can just go and approach, like they're in a petting zoo. Then of course, these are tourists, so they're like "aw, how adorable, they are now forming a strange half circle facing me, for some odd, inconcievable reason! Yep! This unfortunately happens too much! I was at Yellowstone years ago and witnessed 2 foreign tourists get out of their car, one person walked up to the bison and slowly tried to put his arm around it while the other person started to take a photo. When the bison suddenly jerked it's head, the guy jumped back and they ran back to the car. We tried to yell to them that it was dangerous, but we were to far away for them to hear.

I entered Yellowstone shortly after the first few opening days when it's pretty low on people, and the experience is really a spiritual one: Elk and buffalo grazing between hot springs and the new grass just coming up. You take one of the loop drives around hot pools and almost have the place to yourself. The RV's and bigger vans come later after school is out, and the "tourons" arrive. If you can, go early or late near fall closing.
