It’s 1992, and Konami is rocking the arcades with TMNT IV: Turtles in Time. It becomes the best selling arcade game of the time. So of course, they decide to port it over to SNES and Genesis. But what’s this? The Genesis can’t seem to exactly handle the entirety of Turtles in Time, so instead we got a somewhat different game, The Hyperstone Heist. But is Genesis game really as half-assed a port as most people say it is, or should it get some real recognition alongside Turtles in Time? Let’s take a deeper look into both games!

The Genesis could handle a port just fine, and even improve on it in some ways, while suffering the usual drawbacks in others. The real problem was the small ROM size. Konami was hedging their bets, because Sega didn't exactly have the best reputation in Japan. (The Megadrive launch was a bad joke - Super Thunderblade and Space Harrier II? Two full priced arcade length Super Scalers without any scaling?)

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Actually, Nintendo had one-year exclusivity contracts for Turtles in Time (and SFII) throughout 1992. Hyperstone Heist was released in late 1992, so it had to be drastically changed from the SNES version to keep it from infringing on that contract (a similar but less radical case is SFII Turbo being renamed to Street Fighter II' Plus/Special Champion Edition).

@@Holothurion Special Champion Edition proves my point.There was no need for the dramatic downgrade. Sunset Riders ran into the exact same problem of Konami playing it too safe.

There was no reason why the Genesis couldn’t replicate the SNES intro. If you really look at it Konami did a half-assed job bringing the TMNT over to the Genesis, it’s even made more obvious with Tournament Fighters. They took no care unlike Contra Hard Corps which was its own thing completely different from Contra 3, better in some aspects too.

While I agree with you and have liked your comment based on the wasted potential for the Sega Genesis in general and not just TMNT, I loved both beat 'em up titles. I definitely didn't care for Tournament Fighters on the Genesis in its gameplay but I thought it was an interesting contrast on how the Sega Genesis version of TMNT:TF was the edgy version while the SNES version had its Saturday morning aesthetics remaining with a minor blood effect, and you can KEBAB SKEW your opponents with an even bloodier effect on the Genesis using Leonardo. 🤣😂🤣😂

Anyone notice how the SNES version says Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles instead of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Due to censorship in the UK that is the title of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the cartoon show. In the UK it was called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

Unfortunately didn't play Turtles in Time, but me and a friend played through Hyperstone Heist. Fun beat em' up, but it felt almost like Streets of Rage 2, just with a TMNT coat of paint. Hell it even had the iconic truck backing out of an alleyway hazard.

Grew up with both but I prefer the Genesis version. These turtles look like the prime turtles and the 6 button controls made it feel like I was in the arcade.

I actually prefer the genesis version! I know it is missing features and levels when compared to Turtles in time .. however if you look at it as a totally different game you will notice that the combat system in it is smoother an spot on because of the dedicated run button. also the smoother animation gives you an overall better game experience.

The Sega Genesis moon intro looks better with its multi layer background of clouds as the camera pans down the sewer cover. The Snes version takes the rest with its scaling effects and music.

It's obvious the point that the SNES was an arcade port that had the capability of doing " Mode 7 effects and the Genesis didn't that's the main reason for the difference between the two, they just made the stages longer on the Genesis.

Fun fact, the reason why the NES version says Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles is due to the fact that there was a period of time in which the word "ninja" was blacklisted, due to it basically meaning "assasin" so including that word made it "not for kids"

Tuve la suerte de tener la SNES y la Genesis de chico, en la genesis tenia como 40-50 juegos, y en la SNES apenas 6-7, pero uno de esos era el Turtles in Time y por ese juego creo que le meti mas tiempo a la SNES que a la Genesis.

The only game I owned was Turtles In Time on the SNES, and that game was top shelf. While I have spent a little time playing the Genesis game, it seems like a quality effort to be sure, just some what different. At this point, I may even rate it better than the SNES, as that version is somewhat boring to me, as I've played it so many times. LOL
