Welcome to the Bitterroot Valley. Nestled between the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountain ranges in western Montana, the Bitterroot Valley is a true marvel, encompassing the best that Montana has to offer, where recreation becomes a lifestyle.
For thousands of years the Salish and Kootenai people thrived off this fertile landscape, hunted its forests, and lived in rhythm with nature. Lewis and Clark were the first explorers to take notice of the lush valley, and its magnificent mountain ranges. Famous mountain men such as John Colter, Jim Bridger and Jerimiah Johnson wandered this land, not for riches but for the pure adventure.
In 1840, Father Pierre De Smit accompanied a brigade from the American Fur Company into the Rocky Mountains and started the St. Mary’s mission in present day Stevensville.
Settlers flocked to the Bitterroot Valley, seeking its fertile soils and warm climate. To this day several families can trace their roots back to the original homesteaders. To the west of the valley lies the Bitterroot Mountain Range, known for its awe-inspiring mountain peaks, lakes, trails, fishing and hunting. To the east lies the equally breathtaking but vastly different landscape of the Sapphire Mountains, with grassy slopes, timbered draws and rushing creeks. Scenic destinations are scattered around the Bitterroot Valley; Trapper Peak, a massive mountain with its pinnacle extending ten thousand feet above sea level. Lewis and Clark made comments in their journal about the peak, and its rugged nature.
Blodget Canyon opens the canvas of time, with its massive rock formations and rushing creek. This geological spectacle provides a rare glimpse of the world behind the wall of mountains.
Lake Como provides breathtaking vistas, water sports and miles of trails to explore.
Skalkaho Falls, its crystal-clear water originates high in the alpine meadows and plunges over 100 feet. The Bitterroot River is the heart of the valley. The headwaters begin high up in the Sapphire and Bitterroot Mountain ranges and flow north through the Bitterroot Valley.
Situated along the banks of the Bitterroot River are nine small communities; At the southern tip of the valley lies the quaint towns of Sula, Conner and Darby. Hamilton is the largest town and epicenter of the Bitterroot Valley. With just under 13,000 residents. Hamilton provides fine dining, shops and all the necessities. Historic towns like Corvallis and Victor have retained their western charm. Stevensville holds the honor of being the birthplace of Montana. Well-preserved buildings and historic artifacts give a glimpse at beginnings of the Montana territory. To the north lies Florence and finally Lolo, which is just minutes away from the city of Missoula.
Life in the Bitterroot Valley is centered around the rhythm of nature, inspiring mountains, lakes, and the Bitterroot River. This wild country beckons, whispers, and calls to the adventurer in all of us.
