They actually asked permission from Decca, the label, but The Rolling Stones manager (Keith Allan) refused permission and sued them. Mind you, what he did to Jagger and Richards, and also George Harrison really was shocking. The Verve thought they had all the permission they needed until he got involved. In any case, the Rolling Stones track was itself almost an exact copy of an even older song, yet the rolling stones paid no royalties.

@@_starfiendJagger and Richards should have been embarassed to have their names attached to it, they had an opportunity to do the right thing there and just looked like knobs. Not a fan of Noel Gallagher but his cheerful approach to openly ripping stuff off and admitting to it served him well back then
