It is my understanding vermeil is French and pronounced "ver may" It is gold plated onto silver, but better quality than regular electroplating. Excited to see your Japan trip. Outside of Japan "lacquer" objects are not often recognized in the US. It is a painstaking process that lacquer is applied to thin strips of wood. Trays, Bento boxes, rice/soup bowl with lid, even the spoon. The lacquer becomes a mirror like shiny surface. So I was intrigued with the red bead.
