In this week's video I take a look at one of Superman's most sympathetic villains, his defective clone Bizarro. We'll start by looking at his comic book origins, how the character was inspired by a classic movie monster, and how the creative team behind Superman the Animated Series cherrypicked the best bits of the character.

The sad part is that some folks with very heavy mental disorders like Schizophrenia have succeeded in that cause the weight of their disorders kept them from functioning in a society that goes on about mental health but never commits to actually helping them. Even worse is that there are people who make a living off them these folks who have nothing and cannot function much akin to a Freakshow Circus.

Bizarro has always struck me as almost a metaphor for special needs. He's sweet and wants to do the right thing, but his simplistic understanding of the world can lead him to make mistakes. Others demonize those mistakes, interpreting him as a villain, but Superman always shows Bizarro kindness and compassion. As someone with a special needs younger brother, the character has always respnated with me a lot.

I was about to say this. Bizarro has a lot of similarities with folks suffering from developmental disorders and thus they have a harder time grasping concepts tye same as most people. They also are very prime targets of manipulation and at the worst case scenario at the amusement of the manipulators. That is kinda why I have fallen out with most Lolcow Orbiter channels which is made especially worse by their Main Character Syndrome they have especially with some of their targets are actual criminals who are more than capable of hurting women and children.

11:33 Bizarro's return always did kind of bug me, seeing as how he reached a pretty fair living end in STAS. From a citation I found in the Fandom wiki, Bruce Timm wrote on animesuperhero's message boards that the intent in JLU season 3 was that Bizarro's brain had been experimented on so that he'd be "more controllable," with the classic backwards talk as a side effect. The big scar he sported at this point was supposed to imply this.

I think the implication in the later appearances of Bizzaro, and why he was loyal to Luthor, is that Luthor performed some kind of brain surgery on him. This helped him understand the world around him better, but also caused the classic backwards speak that Bizzaro is generally known for. Note that this quirk didn't appear at all in the character UNTIL Luthor joined the Secret Society. There's also what appears to be a large scar on his forehead in a bunch of shots during the series (even a few you included in this video). That being said, it's entirely possible that this "scar" is just an animation error, because it randomly appears and disappears between scenes.

Actually Merry Shelly's monster, or Adam, was quite intelligent. And despite being a walking corpse that would make people gag at mere sight, because he had semi-transparent skin and yellowish hollow eyes, like a well preserved mummy, he quickly learned the world around him and learned by trial and error. Quickly, the monster was able to comprehend reading and even was able to do literary analysis of Paradise lost, where he would identify with the focus character of Satan.

Bizarro was never evil in my opinion. He was just misguided. I consider him to be an unofficial member of the Superman family. Someone who will help out in his own way when the situation is grim but for the most part, is left alone to do his own thing, just as long as no one is hurt. I hate the fact that the writers of JLU brought back Bizarro but had Lex and Grodd lobotimise him in order to make him their slave. If any villain in the dcau Superman rogues gallery deserve a happy ending it is Bizarro.

Superman TAS version of Bizzaro is honestly the most sad version for me. Like every version of him is sad, but his character in the series is especially sad. We see how Luthor created Bizzaro by cloning Clark and programming memories for him. Bizzaro basically was Superman just duplicated and we see how confused he is when seeing the real Superman. Then his mind slowly starts to deteriorate and his makeup comes off which confuses him even more. Imagine just living another day as yourself, then one day your body starts falling apart and you find out you’re not actually you, you’re a clone. Bizzaro even has a mental breakdown when Mercy calls him “Bizzaro” and not Superman which was so heartbreaking especially when he starts ranting “BIZZARO?! THAT NOT MY NAME!!” He never really struck me as a villain, just a damaged victim who was always easily manipulated. He wants to be a hero and to help people, but everything he does just hurts people because his mind is so damaged. It’s honestly sad how often he’s so easily manipulated by people who wish to use him, due to his lack of intelligence and understanding. Because of this one day he’ll consider Superman his friend, and the next day someone will easily trick him into thinking Superman is his enemy. He does have moments of self-awareness with the fact that he is flawed version of Superman, particularly when he sees Superman saving Lois. He realizes he’s not actually Superman which is one of the hardest things to watch with him saying “Me no am Superman, you am Superman. Superman save Lois.” But I was glad to see Lois acknowledge his selflessness and tell him “You are a hero” which puts a smile on his face. I’m just glad Clark seems to always treat him with kindness and understanding knowing it’s not his fault that he’s the way he is. He truly is perfectly Imperfect and deep down all he wants to do is help and be a hero, because once again he is Clark Kent just with a damaged mind.

Actually had an idea regarding him He eventually tries to duplicate the people of Earth using some weird method and bring them to Bizarro World, but pretty much every duplicate is rational (though whenever they can do "backwards" things without hurting themselves, they do it- like selling "cold dogs" and "hot cream", or using kilometers in Bizarro America and the imperial system on the rest of the planet) After Bizarro's duplicate ends up becoming a handsome yet non-superpowered genius universally liked by the entire planet, Bizarro goes mad and attempts to pull a *Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow* by blowing the planet up himself, but the only person he ends up killing in the process is himself

One of my favorite version of Bizzaro is the one that shows up in Superman & Lois, where he was introduced with WEEN music! That and his interpretation is great, he's not dumb, he literally speaks backwards, and the Bizzaro Universe still has the weird silly stuff like all spheres being cubes and all dogs being cats, but still has some genuine interesting drama associated with him.

A giant 60+ kg pile of meat that was unintentionally dangerous, I remember that once when I was playing with him he just grabbed mey arm in his teeth and thrown me across the floor, which of course caused 6yo me to cry in pain and shock. But the thing was the dog shown no signs of anger, it was just playing around for him. And yeah my parrents never let me get close to it again throughout the rest of my childhood xd

5:12 Mary Shelley's Frankenstein's Monster was nothing like the movie interpretation. Her version of the monster was intelligent and cunning. And while in the movie, the monster would come to like humanity, the book's version hated humanity for never accepting him in their society. Sorry for the long comment, but I felt I should clear this up a little. Great video!

No problem, and that’s kinda what I’m was trying to get at. Brutal was probably a better word than bestial - the movie monster became something of a comedic figure over time (much like Bizarro!) but the original was a stone cold killer. He was philosophical about it though!

I always like these types of characters who do want to help but just don't quite understand how to or don't know how to regulate their strength. The Iron Giant reminds me of this too and I'm sure it's just a trend to take characters inspired by Frankenstein's Monster and make them more heroic so the audiences feels even more sorry for them. Bizarro was one of my favourite antagonists from STAS. It's a bit of a shame he was seemingly changed into just a broken puppet in JLU. I did always wish we got to see Bizarro and Grundy interact in the JL series due to some of the parallel's with them being misunderstood brutes who the heroes actually feel sorry for. They don't really have a place in the world so perhaps they could have became friends.

Great video. Two things to note. Im surprised the original scientist didnt try to duplicate poisons if his ray made duplicates that were opposites. Two, my theory on why Bizarro's clothes degraded was because his bioelectric aura was acting incorrectly and degrading his clothes. (The bioelectric aura was the bullshit comic book reason to explain why superman's clothing doesn't instantly get blasted off in battle. His aura extends a few millimeters awayvfrom his skin, extending his invulnerability to his clothes.

Here's a fun thought experiment... So, a lot of Bizarro-style characters have appeared (multiple versions sometimes), including an entire universe of Bizarros in the comics. If you were going to write a story about a non-Superman Bizarro, who would it be and what would be the conflict? I know there are a couple Bizarro Lanterns already, but that's the exact route I'd go and try to really explore the concept. Instead of courage and willpower, Bizarro GL's power would be derived from his COWARDICE with his ring able to create anything he is scared of. He would try to help the League fight evil or even just help ordinary citizens, but his own constructs would terrify him. He then tries to create a new construct to fight the first, only to compound his problem. He will be frightened away to start the cycle over somewhere else. But the real GL would eventually teach him to face his fears, and his newfound courage will deactivate the ring. At which point the League immediately takes the ring away and sends him to much needed therapy.

When I saw the cover to the DC Comics Encyclopedia where it shows Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman up close against their enemies the Joker, Bizarro Superman, and Cheetah, at first I thought Bizarro was Solomon Grundy from the 2001 Justice League show in a Superman suit, based on how similar he looked to Grundy. I didn't even know Bizarro was in Justice League Unlimited at the time, let alone Superman the Animated Series. It was one of the rare moments my DC noob showed, thankfully in private. In fairness Grundy also spoke in broken English just like Bizarro Superman, so at least I couldn't be faulted on that.

I'd have loved a Bizzaro book somewhat akin to Planet Hulk, where Bizzaro ends up on an alien world and becomes its hero. I've never been a fan of the inverted Bizzaro-speak, the broken english/ speech makes sense from a narrative standpoint given that, when he's a flawed clone, his brain would be impaired. While I dislike the majority of the New 52, I did like the version of Bizzaro that came from the Forever Evil arc. I didn't expect to be a fan of the father-like affection that New 52 Luthor had for him. Red Son Superman is probably my favorite heroic representation of the flawed clone Bizzaro type. I HATED what they did to him in the animated adaptation.

Bizarros kind of an interesting hotspot of ableism it seems. And a good example of how the DCA does have its failures and clear problem regions too. The whole curing disabilities business is really kinda yucky. And later on, how his developmental issues serve more as the butt of the joke are somewhat troubling. Plus, the best solution Supes came up with being in essence segregation and isolation "away from normal people" does smell iffy - even if Bizzaros powers do somewhat justify it. Despite it being a very dangerous role due to said powers, Bizzaro sure coulda done with some form of assistant to both help ensure he isn't taken advantage of and that above all else, he could live his life fairly good. Heck, if segregation was really the only available option, Superman could have used his ship to go hang out and check up on Bizzaro every now and then to make sure all is well. Would have potentially avoided a lot of migraines going ahead if he maintained regular contact, making it harder to foul up the friendship (as Bizzaro saw it) thus making sure the happy times continued.
