I have been in this sport for 16 years and until recently this info was not taught. It still isn't in many schools. I had to figure all of this out on my own. I have asked many high level blackbelts about guard retention and none of them could explain any of this in any meaningful way. When I wanted to teach what i learned i ended up creating exactly these same drills. There isn't any other way to do it. Jiujitsu is incredibly amatuerish in its coaching. So it is refreshing to finally see people like Chris Paines, Priit, Greg Souders, not teaching technique by technique, but giving real working info and more importantly real working training methods. This route is faster and more efficient in every way than the traditional way of teaching Jiujitsu. You can develop a working guard that frustrates upper belts in a few months of focus. This material isn't complicated or hard to learn. It doesn't take 5 years and a purple belt. It takes a coach that understands how to transmit the knowledge. Most dont.

Growing up in a boxing family, now attempting to learn some BJJ, I deeply appreciate all these boxing references but Priit and Chris. It takes out the mystery, and just makes it so understandable for me. Thanks!

Game changing principles. Everytime I watch your videos (and pritt's) it feels like I have uncovered the hidden scrolls of defense.

Another enjoyable seminar by Chris. I love the Priit/Paines combo. Its like Batman and Robin (you figure out who is who) in the conceptual BJJ teaching world. Thanks for sharing your superpowers and knowledge. It has made BJJ so much more fun and cerebral again. Learning like the first day, every day....and Ive been doing it for over a decade. Well done once again.

Most (probably including myself) would NOT have the courage to upset the status quo in such a radical and generous way so thank you my man. You guys are an inspiration.

Thank you! Priit instilled a great ethos in me that this is science, and by saying anything out loud we are publishing our ideas, so they should be open to critique. It's the only way we get better. So I will critique and be critiqued in return.

Tremendously helpful video! The trap of technique collecting has been the bane of my BJJ journey, and to hear it simplified in such a way places the onus on me to be aware of myself more than ever during rolling. Would love to see how you structure this more in your own gym, and also how you deal with smash style pressure which I assume would be maintenance of the concepts you showed here. Truly excellent stuff! Thank you!

I love your videos Chris. They instantly improve my game after a single watch. I was wondering if you can make a similar video on takedowns. Takedowns are something for me where it is strictly a rolodex collection of techniques, which of course means you instantly forget about them when you go live. Can you make something similar, going over the higher concepts and principals of what makes an effective takedown?

Absolutely! I've been working on some takedown theory recently in classes. I'll add it into my new series.

@@ChrisPainesBJJ Much like after watching your 'defend everything' seminar, I have felt some instant improvements when passing others' and even playing my own closed guard. It has given me a better understanding of what a good open guard is and why specific passing/ retention techniques work. I like your idea of treating BJJ training more like boxing instead of the predicament/ solution training often found in traditional Martial Arts. This makes sense to me having trained in both. Cheers!

Chris is a really good teacher! Honestly like him better than Priit even. Has a much better way of explaining things and i dont think i can here Priit say the words "jab jab cross" one more time lol.

this is why I just play sit-up guard with shin to shin. the moment you aren't holding me down I am coming up. Why would I let them grab my feet when I cant grab them? sounds like a bad deal to me.
