Back in the late 40s or early 50s, my Dad took a B&W portrait of my Mom that was reminiscent of the B&W glamorous head shots of famous Hollywood actresses. Mom looks absolutely stunning in that shot-- dark hair, white hat, elegant expression. The irony is that she never thought of herself as the beautiful one among her sisters. That head shot proves otherwise. B&W rocks, for stills and for movies--Casablanca, anyone?

Thank you for that, Peter. A few months ago I set my camera to B&W in square format. Whenever I used Bridge and ACR all went well. However, when I took any of them into Lightroom they were immediately converted to colour. I later realised what I'd forgotten. I'd set a preset for photos that were taken into LR! I still prefer ACR to LR so I didn't change the settings. I mainly use LR for a record of the photos but that's all. Now to get cracking on some more B&W.

I truly love B&W photography. Since there is no color to stimulate the brain, one must be truly creative in B&W in order to properly capture a stunning image. It's not that difficult once you get the hang of it, but it almost always requires some thought and possibly some manipulation before snapping the shutter. Even the most mundane objects can be beautiful in B&W whereas in color that same object would be quite uninteresting. And color filters, as you mentioned, are virtually a necessity in B&W. Excellent video, Peter.

Back in the eighties I was a little child but I already photographed. My big brother gave me a Soviet Zenit camera and we went out for walks all the time. I learned the basics of the exposure triangle there, with the help of meter I learned to nail it. It was fun to develop the images in the bathroom, I still smell the chemicals, I still feel the frustration of getting the film into the developing box in total darkness, great memories! We were even able to mount the camera on a nest of a hawk and to photograph with wired remote control 😀. I will have to dig in the old boxes, maybe I will find some images. It was all black and white of course and it was very enjoyable. Thanks for great tips, Peter.

Having shot HP5 for nearly 50 years (48 to be precise) I will continue to use it till I die or it is discontinued (whichever is earlier). Now the "good light" rule of golden hour/blue hour does not apply directly to BW photography because you can use contrasts to your advantage. Overcast days give nicer lower contrast pictures with more details, though. -- Totally agree with what you said about portraits, this is a very good reason to convert digital pictures to BW. Because I think they show more of the personality itself, and often are more lively,. -- Tip: Print out BW pictures with a laser printer on watercolour paper and then colour them with water colours -- great fun and everybody will be amazed about your artistic skills!

A good video to support the assignment. It's worth reminding people that what you see in the viewfinder or screen is the jpeg that will be produced so even if (like me) you really enjoy the post processing in Lightroom, you should ensure the settings are set to save your pics as raw+jpeg even when choosing mono as your mode of shooting. If you don't save both then you have no colour file to use in post and will be limited to the 8bit jpeg. Another useful tip is that when shooting in streets as it gets dark, it's worth playing with the colour temperature slider when you do your mono conversion. The shop lights will have a low colour temperature compared to the sky and you can use the colour temperature slider to balance the exposure between the different lights before fine tuning them with the colour sliders in the B&W module. This is very helpful in avoiding blown highlights in shop windows. This technique also helps when doing street portraits.

I did a lot of Black & White Photography with film, both with 24x36 Cameras and 6x6 Cameras and some with 4"x5" and 5"x7". For outdoor Photography a yellow filter was nearly always mounted as standard, either a light yellow or a strong yellow filter, some times orange, red or green filter. I did Nature Photography, Landscape Photography, Street Photography, Architecture Photography, "Art" Photography, Portrait Photography, Macro Photography and more. At some point I tried Ansel Adams Zone System where I used 5 film magazines for Hasselblad, but that took much too long time to do, so I found that using the excellent Kodak TMAX 400 which I exposed as ASA/ISO 200 and developed in a thin solution very gently for a long time, it gave film negatives that both had very good contrast and at the same time very good and many grey tones, so I did not need to use the Zone System any more ! I used Ilford Multigrade paper and a DURST M605enlarger with color head. For digital I use Capture One which gives very good control for Black & White, it is easy to combine "filters" to give the contrast and grey tones that you like. It is much easier to do Black & White Photography with a digital Camera than with analog film and analog camera ! I do not use any filters on my Lenses for digital Photography.

Love B&W. Especially film. My rule of thumb. color digital, B&W film. First use the OLY set to monochrome, ISO to what ever film speed I have in the film camera, filter setting, A/P/S/M, aperture and shutter speed setting. with the 25mm lens take a B&W digital shot. Then use the NIKON D90 with the 50mm lens duplicating the settings and use film. I can then print the digital proof picture and get the look I want. Then I go to the dark room and make the silver print.

Hello Peter, ich began 60 years ago to take photos. The first camera was an "Agfa Synchro Box". And the film was called 120 or 125. Later I had a "Bencini Comet S" camera. The film was more modern. All pictures were B/W. Both cameras did not have exposure meters. We learnt how to judge the incoming light. And trhen sdjusted speed and aperture. It was a fantastic learning process. With the time, pictures got better and better. By the way > Do you think a video about B/W and color specific filters could be an interesting subject? Regards from Barcelona, Spain.

I don't want to recreate my recipes whether it is B&W or colour. I just want to get it straight out of my camera the look and feel I did with my recipe. Why only OM Workspace keep the config out of the ORF RAW file and not Camera Raw ? I prefer using the latter software rather than OM Workspace. Is there a solution ? What would you advice ?

Peter gives the (inadvertent) impression that in-camera or post-processing filter effects can achieve the same result as actual filters. This is not correct in many cases, not only for polarisers and UV but also for many colour filters. The red/green window contrast change cannot be done with post-processing for example.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
The red/green contrast change can be done in post. There are ways to adjust only one color. It might look a bit different, but it can be done. Yes, digital filters look a bit different and are not as strong as real filters, but digital ones work.
@tobykelsey4459
@tobykelsey4459 2 жыл бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter OK I was not explaining clearly. If you still have the full colour raw file you can, but if you just have a B/W jpeg you have already lost the colour data. Often digital processing can create similar effects to filters, but usually at the expense of worse noise or detail. It's best to use lens filters if you have the time. I also prefer less processed images in general.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I miss understood. You are absolutely right. There is no color info when using monochrome picture profile and jpg. I might have not been clear on this. Thanks for pointing it out. Real filters are better. I agree. Sometimes many of just wont carry them or even have them.

I enjoyed your video. I agree with much of your presentation but I must say, at least on my computer, the videos with you and a snowy background were excessively contrasty. Only black and white, no shades of gray. Black and White is so tricky. In the modern world, it is valid- to me- only when color is absolutely irrelevant. So many subjects these days... flowers, costumes, scenes of nature, are done in b&w when they should not be. Life occurs in color. That's the way our eyes and brains see life. If the subject matter, and your perception thereof, see color as irrelevant and maybe even distracting then, OK, use monotone. I know very well that many people see the old ways as always better. Photography began as monotone because the then current methods provided nothing else, but that means perhaps no more than that it's obsolete, not better. Black and white is not the pure, essentially true and pure form of photography just because it was first. B&W has its place, but a minor one, and is valid from only a historical standpoint.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think B&W is great for learning. Light, shapes etc. mean a lot more. I also think that B&W is interesting because that shows the world differently.
@HansDeseure
@HansDeseure 2 жыл бұрын
Same here - video contrast appeared quite heavy on my screen. But B&W 'obsolete' sounds like saying that acoustic instruments are obsolete because we now have synthesizers that can produce a wider spectrum. There is a certain magic in making art within the limitations of one's tools that is easy to recognize but pointless to try quantify. When we see what a true master achieves when drawing or playing or photographing, the result touches our heart. Whether we like the medium or not, often has more to do with our own past, education and perhaps, what we need in our current stage of life.
@bsuthe
@bsuthe 2 жыл бұрын
@@HansDeseure I am, by no means, against b&w but I just think sometimes it is used when perhaps it should not be. I have seen many photos of dancers in what are probably beautiful costumes, and I wonder what the beautiful colors were. Or flowers, or so many other things, Sunsets! They're all about color. B&W is great when color is irrelevant.
