And you know how far back this devalued black wool goes? See the following: Baa Baa Black Sheep is about the medieval wool tax, imposed in the 13th Century by King Edward I. Under the new rules, a third of the cost of a sack of wool went to him, another went to the church and the last to the farmer. (In the original version, nothing was therefore left for the little shepherd boy who lives down the lane). Black sheep were also considered bad luck because their fleeces, unable to be dyed, were less lucrative for the farmer.

It is a positional trick. If you put ANY sheep in that position, they are slightly paralyzed. They do get used to having shearing done once per year and most ewes just give up and allow it. Most rams usually fight, because they are used to being the Alpha in a herd. Some acquiesce easier than others.

I’ve wondered if the superfine Merinos have had any black genes totally bred out of them or if mutations still occur? I’ll have to ask my Tasmanian farming friends whose generations of sheep farmers have bred the finest wool for over a century. It’s a fascinating anomaly in any case. Nature is wonderful.
