What a goof on my part! Must have mixed up names in my head with Taylor of Jockstrap and Tyler of BCNR. Then the comments on Tyler’s solo stuff got me further jumbled. How embarrassing !

It was rewarding to watch them develop these songs from the early shows (where they are understandably nervous) to the Bush Hall gig months later (where they sound rock solid after playing the songs for months). My favorite moment is the bit where the backing vocals come in during "Across the Pond Friend".

I think you can draw an analogy to pink floyd. They lost their singer early on and then had to change their sound a bit. It took them a few tries but they eventually peaked past syd and i hope bcnr do as well.

Professor skye- I have a thought. Love your videos, and there are occasionally visual cues, but this would also work great as a podcast. I like to listen to your videos while I work, but can be difficult to do so having up on my phone. You should take the audio from all your videos and start a podcast feed! Would likely grow audience a bit as well!

Saw them preform in Dublin just the other day and it was genuinely the best concert I've seen, the way they built off each other was amazing, the slight changes to the sound of the songs. The new songs were amazing too! I had restrained myself from listening to any live uploads and wow horses and Nancy takes the night are really something else. Tyler played an alternate intro to I won't always love you, altogether insane. Great review as always, my personal favourite track is the wrong trousers, I think Lewis' voice can convey so much emotion so easily because of how vulnerable it feels, an extremely moving track.

Skye, how did you not use the example of Joy Division reforming into New Order at the beginning of the video? That’s a way better analogy than Lynyrd Skynyrd 😂 And YOU’RE the one who said it in the original video you made about Isaac leaving! Lol

he says he was sick in the Live From Bush Hall concert video - i completely took that excuse on face value and unless i missed something i still think it was absolutely true with the way he held back in his songs. i'd love to hear him belt out Across the Pond Friend when his throat and nose wouldnt be filled with sickness and even as is, it's one of the top 3 to me in this album others are Turbines and Laughing Song

Apologies for being the BC,N(e)R(d), but I thought you might find it interesting to know that in terms of the rest of the band members singing and the PaulJohn/George/Ringo dynamic that exists on this album, since its release they have begun to perform a song written and sung by Georgia titled "Horses"! And just to be extra annoying and round it out there are actually two more officially released songs with Charlie and Luke on lead vocals, albeit on their vinyl-only covers albums. Charlie sings on the second half of "Happier Than Ever" and Luke sings the cover of Magnetic Fields' "I Think I Need a New Heart." Also I couldn't find the source again tho I had read it myself at one point, either in a random reddit post from somebody who met him after a show or on their recent r/indieheads AMA, Charlie stated they were working on a song for him to sing in live shows as well.

I get slight Jethro Tull vibes from some of their newer stuff, in a good way. i wasn't completely blown away when I saw them perform this stuff live a few months ago but when the live album came out I realized that I remembered most of the songs very well which kinda surprised me. I think it's really memorable and great and am really excited for whatever direction they go in

For me, the Isaac situation could be compared to Ian Curtis or Kurt Cobain but in a positive way, since Isaac decided to leave the band and take care of himself. Also, it really is obvius that the material in Bush Hall doesnt come to the same level as their debut and especially Ants from Up There. The band knows that, they made the songs in 3 weeks and just wanted to keep in a live setting, they never were meant to be on a studio album(because they werent as good as their other songs). But, and here comes a big thing. Their new unreleased songs that they are perfoaming show a lot of potencial, they are gorgeous, Nancy Takes The Knight is a marvelous song with beautiful arrangements and Horses is the first time Georgia is on lead vocals in the band. So, I really believe that BCNR next album, will bring it all back. And for the Isaac fanatics fans, the door is open, the band said that they wanna do a big number of songs to the point that if one of them is not feeling well to sing, they can simply dont play the songs from that person. In that way, Isaac could come back to the band and dont feel the same stress as before. That is what I believe at least.

To your point about a sports team getting better (or staying the same) after losing its superstar, sportswriter Bill Simmons has a theory about this called the Ewing Theory (named after Patrick Ewing). Basically, it's the theory of a team that has not achieved meaningful success loses its superstar (injury, trade, etc.) and is written off, but they exceed expectations and sometimes even get better. Not achieving meaningful success might not apply to BC,NR, but the overall thought of what is expected of them might. Are the expected expectations (is that a thing?) of them even higher then they should be? A better sports metaphor...maybe the Red Sox after David Ortiz retires?

Thank you for the Lewis appreciation, his voice honestly reminds me a lot of mine and it’s so cool to hear that kind of less confident singing style used in something like this. And I also really appreciated how your thoughts in this review shifted from the first one, and you took the time to acknowledge the emotions around the album that made it hard to process for you at first

about the sports metaphor, theres something called the "ewing theory", which is the concept that after an underperforming teams star athlete who attracts a large amount of attention and gravity gets injured or leaves that team tends to get better. obviously it isnt exactly comporable because people really like those other bcnr records but thats what i thought of.

Most of those songs were actually writen and played by Tyler in some solo shows she did 2 years ago (there's a video of her live at the Windmill). I ear a lot of people saying that ''Live at Bush Hall'' is all about Isaac departure but I think the songs were writen way before it happened.

Recommending you (and anyone who likes Griselda/Mach-Hommy, etc) listen to Mickey Diamond from Detroit... he did two albums with Big Ghost Ltd, _Gucci Ghost I & II,_ and has a new project, _Nobody Bleeds Like Flair,_ with beats produced entirely by his wife, Mallori Knox. He's got a bunch of projects from the last couple years, but those 3 are remarkable and the best place to start. His wife builds tracks around incredibly soulful samples... 🥰

the way you said "you have demos of them playing this in 1948? i dont care it's about Isaac" has me trying to figure out a BCNR 9/11 joke like uuuuuhhhh "you're saying they wrote and performed this live on September 10th 2001 so it can't be about Isaac and it's probably something coded about how they planned and executed 9/11 but news flash, BCNR Supernerd, it's about Isaac"

It's pretty unreal how they were able to pump out some of the songs in this album so quickly. Can't really complain about lack of clear direction, it's obviously understandable given circumstances. But, I still have my qualms with vocal range. May Tyler and Lewis never hit levels of intensity volume dynamics Isaac did. You can argue this is from the calmer direction of the album, but I don't really think that's true. Across the Pond Friends has instrumentals with enough intensity to support louder more clear vocals for instance. Charlie seems to have some fuck you loud levels to his voice at least in that Happier than Ever cover, but again I have doubts over his range just because we haven't heard enough of his vocals and his main role is not vocals. They all have nice voices don't get it twisted, but their range at least as far as we saw was limited. In theory, if you can have many potential vocalists in the band it makes vocal diversity higher. But sometimes it feels more like talking than singing in this album, like their accents are still very strong and less getting your voice to a certain note. Unless one of them can really rise up in vocal range, I still think getting a bonafide main job vocalist in offseason is good. Anyways, gonna give them time. I trust those behind the band to improve direction and make something that declares their presence on the world stage

I love the first two albums, but I don't connect with this live album. As I listen to the these new songs, I keep wishing there were more compelling melodies and more vocal consistency. I think the band would greatly benefit from adding a new member to be the primary lead singer and lyricist.
