Joel and TaMiya, who are Black, say they had just left a sporting goods and apparel store after purchasing their young son his first basketball when the white female manager followed them outside and falsely accused Joel of stealing the item.
TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Accused of something terrible?
“Anytime a white woman gets into a conflict with a black man in public it’s not a good situation,” says TaMiya, noting that the manager then flagged down police.

“I was afraid my husband would get tased - or shot,” she says.
Joel says, “She sicced those officers on us and told them that we stole a ball that we couldn’t have stolen, because - obviously I didn’t steal it - because I had a receipt,” adding, “I feel like, just [her] lying to a police officer could have got us killed.”
Joel and TaMiya say they felt they were racially profiled by the store manager. Watch the video above to find out how claim police treated them.

I’ve worked retail and one of the main rules was that if someone stole something and their feet have already hit the ground on the outside of the building, you have to let them go. You don’t follow them bc things like this can happen. Once they’re off the property, they every right to sue the entire store for whatever you do after you follow them outside of the store. That “manager” should know that. So for those saying “this is not about race” then please tell me what this is actually about.

She thought they stole. How do say it is racist? You can't prove her motivation... in fact to prescribe racist motivation is just furthering the problem. Is every negative interaction between a white woman and a black man because of racism? And how can you tell the difference if the aggressor doesn't state their motivation? Can you read minds?

To follow someone a city block over a 12 dollar ball is ridiculous. I’ve been a store manager and we were told if we thought something was stolen we were told never follow people. Also as a woman of color I’ve had this happen to me. I’ve been followed out of the store after buy something and accused of theft. This is why I always get a receipt no matter how small me purchase is. I also will not use self checkout because I want an extra layer of protection. Because I know I will never be given the benefit of the doubt.

You should not live your life fearing to use self checkout. You should not feel bad if you are followed out of a store. You are not obligated to show a receipt (unless the store has a policy where they check everyone’s receipt - and even then it’s still your choice, but at least you know they aren’t profiling you). If they want to call the police, and the police want to falsely arrest you, you should let them.

First off, usually people who steal do so by covering it up, not by having the supposed “stolen,” item right out in the open for everyone to see. And she could have asked the person who charged their purchases if indeed they paid for it, they could have looked back at the purchase items. A small ball is really nothing to make a big deal out of it.

Horrible manager. I feel bad for the family and the cops. The cops did the right thing by the end. The police believed the manager, which is understandable. But they saw the receipt and they said ok. You can't get mad at the cops in the video. The manager is horrible. She should have asked her employees instead of assuming. It probably was because they didn't have it in a bag or something. But this is why you always have a receipt.

How are they cruel? I think it’s cruel to falsely accuse people of stealing, especially when officers kill unarmed Black people disproportionately in this country. Why should anyone ask them for a receipt? If I managed a store, and I was competent, and I was concerned that someone may have shoplifted, I would have asked my employees if anyone remembers them at the register. If I was a more than competent manager, I would have checked the cameras myself.

I wonder why Dr Phil and his staff didn't investigate this more and get both sides to this story. It seems like the store and the manager were in the wrong, but I would still like to hear both sides of the story. There were just a lot of video snippets that seem to be favoring the couples assertions. I wonder if the police were wearing body cams? It seems like Dr Phil wants to perpetuate a problem rather than defuse it.

someone leaving a store without their item(s) bagged looks suspicious no matter what color you are; but all the manager had to do was ask for a receipt (which they had one) and then apologize. The police were totally useless and sided with the manager even though they had receipt for the item. The only gripe I have with the black couple is them thinking the officers are going to immediately gun them down or something just for them being black and her saying that white women always have bad interactions with black people (which is a racist statement).
