This is an old post but African American culture is jazz, blues, rock n roll and neosoul. In Louisiana, it's zydeco music, zydeco dances, second line parades, umbrellas at weddings, jumbalaya, gumbo, voodoo and crawfish boils. On the Georgia coast and Sea Islands in South Carolina it's the ring shout dance, the Geechee and Gullah dialects, fanner baskets, red rice and sea food. In D.C. it's go go music. In Harlem it's the celebration of black American artist like Augusta Savage, and Charles White. Our culture is writers like Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Octavia Butler, Lorraine Hansberry. It's step dancing, j-setters at HBCU's, black fraternities and sororities. In the rest of the south it's sweet potato pie, collard greens, peach cobbler, cornbread, fish fry gatherings, barbecues and line dances at weddings. Historically it's the gourd banjo but most AA don't play it anymore.

In another interview he mentioned having a white fiancee. I could imagine the tension between them arguing about their cultures.

Its sad that the deterioration of the black people in my opinion as come along in the 2000's , blacks had done great strides and had won so many battles for equality , but in my opinion the glorifying of gangster culture is growing rapidly and is not helping young black men and woman, Henry Louis Gates is a great role model for black and whites and should be applauded for his efforts.

Thy evolution of the culture today is a reflection of how the majority feel. Poverty has been scientifically proven linked to criminal activity. 20% of blacks have been found in in 2015 through new dna technology. Many served lenthy sentences 0 was compensation. Fathers were taken away, homes destroy. Discrimination and document proof of housing, business loan, bank and job discrimination is occurring till this day. Many of blacks who were wrongfully incarcerated raped in prison, harassed daily ect will possess thy mental fortitude to over xenophobia and many other obstacles. While many who have been psychologically damage by america and have had dysfunction passed down since slavery, will reflect the way society treats them daily. As animals and criminals. Research the winnapeg native indians and tell me if their culture has always been how it is today....

It's amazing that some people try to pass off violence, academic failure and degenerative music as a vibrant subculture.
