Hey everyone! So been meaning to this project for awhile. I did not realize how poor the efficiency of single vent portable air conditioners are, had I known, I wouldn't have gotten this unit. Decided to make this a bit better without breaking the bank. I use this unit for cooling off my garage during the summer when working on my small engine projects. It does very well for a two car insulated garage.
***For the dehumidifier mode, it's actually not a true dehumidifier. Normally a dehumidifier runs the humid over the evaporator coils to remove the moisture of the air leaving cooler air, but then directs the dry/cool air over its condenser coils to heat the air up before dumping the warmer dry air back into your room. The dehumidifier mode is basically still air conditioning as the unit does not redirect the cool/dry air over the condenser coils. The fan is locked to low speed you cannot change it. It still dehumidifies, but it is also still cooling. Not the worst thing during a hot summer. My apologies I did not touch upon this point in this video, but I did an update on this below.

I had the same problem with my portable device. My device has two suction grills and a hot air outlet hole in the middle. I realized very quickly that it is a design mistake and the efficiency is very low because the cold air coming from the room is reheated and taken out. In addition, a vacuum is created in the room and heated air comes back into the room through other ways. I searched everywhere on KZfaq which of the two grills must be connected to a new hose so that the aspiration can be done from the outside. This video was the most revealing. I give A+++++++ to the creator of this video. Bravo!

I found this issue when I discovered the vacuume in my room. I screwed the window adapter to the back where the intake vent is located (you used foam insulation board), I used plastic around it to create the seal. The hose clipped on like it would to the window adapter. Then I installed the airconditioner in my closet to cool my servers and network equipment. The hoses went into a plywood attic access door where I cut 2 holes for the hoses. I insulated the hot hose and taped around any holes where the intake hose would pull room air. The airconditioner has been running well for 2 years with this fix. Nice video.

If the air coming from the condenser is hot, you might have too much restriction / too much pressure loss in your ducts, DIY adapters etc combined. That in turn increases the power consumption and at the same time decreases cooling. Try to at least have the hoses as short and straight as possible and with gradual turns instead of sharp kinks. Hope this helps, and thank you for the video!

Actually I do like the fact that your machine gets noticibly quieter with the mods than be4, I have a portable ac unit too with a massive 6 inch single hose and I am still trying to find a way to modify it, because aside the room negative pressure issue with these single hose units another thing is the noise it makes. Mine has a large condenser vent behind it with a very powerful and noisy blower fan. The compressor also makes a lot of noise through the condenser vent. Thanks for a great video, very educative too👍

What about turning it into a window unit and using the exhaust tube on the air being cooled, and just looping it? My window is really tall, so it would fit my portable ac. So I was thinking about doing that, then sealing everything and just hope it works. Right now it's just a slightly cold air in front of me (I live in a 20m2 studio and it doesn't work that well).

Great video - I am doing this now with some experimenting with intake to my ductwork to the basement. Two things I did that changes everything. 1. Insulate the exhaust pipe. 2. Vent through the wall so the exhaust pipe would be 12 inches (and insulated). AC comes with a nice adaptor and cover for the wall for the winter. Looks better as well. Made my comment before watching the whole video... you can get form fitting insulation for the exhaust - it is not crazy and makes a big difference. If you look at the adaptor for the GE model to convert 1 to 2 hose, it has vents so it is not 100% sealed as yours is... something to think about.
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 Жыл бұрын
It's too bad that the GE kit would not fit this particular machine. I like what you did and yes I did get some insulation for the exhaust pipe. It cuts down on the radiating heat that inevitably comes out of that so all the heat goes out the window. Some others have mentioned creating a 3D printed adapter plate to fit this particular model just like the GE kit but unfortunately I do not have access to such tools but in theory that could make this conversion much easier.

Wow, it works. It is 30C (86F) outside and 21C (70F) inside (14,000 btu 1000sqft room) - normally It would I would be 23C (74F) - would not be able to get this low before. I think the big factor is the air is taken from my basement (outside air with your setup) and not from the air conditioned room, which would suck all that cool air out. Make with foam now - will make something better looking later.

I did this to my midea 8000 BTU unit, the difference was negligible. Almost like the engineers designed it to be efficient using the rooms cooler air. Not sure. Smaller condensers aren't going to be as efficient using 20 degree warmer outside air. I think this is why they say a single hose unit has to work harder to get the room cool, but once it's there it's fine.

Thank you for the insight. I still think the advantages of a dual hose outweigh a single hose unit. Window units operate the same way with warmer air cooling their condenser coils, and compressor size is about the same too. The negative pressure issue in the room is a big issue in my mind, you don't want to pull air away from another room. If you are in an apartment and someone is smoking, ick. Hello, another question for you, I’ve got two portable a/c units, plan to use them side by side in the living room to cool an 850 sq foot condo. Do you feel the two units can operate together a few feet apart, so if one unit fails to keep up with higher temps, the other unit would kick in, versus the 2nd unit never kicking in, where the first unit is doing all the work? I supposed I could extend the hoses and have them about 10 feet apart. What are your thoughts?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 Жыл бұрын
Using two units will certainly help your cooling capacity. You can set them to the same thermostat settings to achieve this. I would not set them up as a master and slave meaning one unit is constantly running trying to get to its lowest possible temperature and the other one simply running at a lower thermostat setting. You can run them right next to each other or a part I don't think it will matter.

Will 4 inch dryer vent hose work as the second vent?
@SSJ0016
@SSJ0016 4 ай бұрын
Confused as to how this might work if your unit only has a single fan. Are there two intake fans inside the unit? One intake for the compressor vent, and another intake for recirculating the inside air? It's these two air streams you mention are sealed off from eachother, right? I'm wondering what drives the airflow over the cool side if the air intake for the compressor comes from outside, over the compressor to cool it down, and then right back outside. There must be some other fan for the evaporator side as well, right? Or do they use some kind of clever engineering with a single fan to draw air in through both intakes while preventing them from mixing together?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 4 ай бұрын
Two fans. One for evap and other for condenser. The evap drip pan drips on hot condenser coils and condenser fan evacs moisture. The rub is the intake vent for condenser fan steals inside room air to cool creating negative pressure in the room lowering efficiency.

@@Bassguitarist1985 Awesome, thanks! I have this model, slightly different molding on the back, but it's gotta be basically the same on the inside. I'm in the process of converting it to a dual hose unit. I really hope it helps because when I got it last year it barely did anything! But I live in an unconditioned apartment building, so any air it sucked in to replace what it stole for the compressor was already hot and humid, which basically resulted in a net zero temperature change. I hear the single hose units fare much better in a home that is already air conditioned, just you want to extend that to another room. That way the air that it draws into the room is already at a comfortable temp. My apt. is basically a worst case scenario for these single hose units.

Valid question, but I have been running this for the last year or so since this video came out during the heat waves and no issues. I took the advice of another commenter to keep both the exhaust and intake hoses as short as possible to prevent any air resistance. It's also reduces the amount of radiated heat from the exhaust hose going back into the room. Window air conditioners cool off their compressor and condenser coils with the hot air outside all the time. The exhaust fan is drawing air from the vent I made the hose for over the compressor/condenser, same as a window unit.

There are so many of these types of videos that do not take into consideration the fact that you are indeed using the previously-cooled air to cool the condenser, but you will lose a lot of efficiency if you use outside (presumably much higher temp than the inside air) air. Of course there is a little bit of savings by converting to a dual vent system, but if you do the calculations, it is very small, so take your results with a grain of salt. Now the vacuum issue is a problem if you are in a very tight room, but most people are just augmenting a bedroom, so the issue is also negligible.
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 Ай бұрын
Appreciate your response. I ultimately see that a dual vent is best, even if gains are small. The vacuum condition is a problem bottom line. The warmer from outside cooling the condenser does lower efficiency slightly yes, but it's not an adverse effect to the point the AC doesn't cool properly. It was a worthwhile project to do in my eyes..others have found value in it as well. Thank you again for your insight too!
@mikafoxx2717
@mikafoxx2717 28 күн бұрын
While that's true, the cold air getting heated gives a much higher coefficient of performance than heating hot outside air, you also have to think that you negate that when you realize that you're pulling in outside air. If the air outside is just as hot as the cool inside air you've heated and thrown outside, it can't be efficient at all. It can't pump heat if it's not moving more heat outside than it is inside.. that's the major flaw with these single hoses. The cooler it is outside the better their actual efficiency. Heating the hot outside air always heats the outside air more and therefore more efficient. I do have a portable AC unit, but the irony that my new unit has a COP of 2.3 and my old 90's window AC has a COP of about 3.. new split systems probably get a COP of over 4 or 5

Hey! I'm trying that right now since it's 87⁰F and 56% RH out today. Yes it will dehumidify with either single or dual hose with a caveat. The unit is not a true dehumidifier where the incoming humid air moves over the evaporator and then through the condenser coils which are hot back into the room since the hot exhaust is exiting out the window. Basically the units dehumidifier setting is air conditioning but on low fan. You still gain the benefits of the dual hose with evaporative cooling and dehumidification all in one.

So when you set this unit to dehumidify it changes the damper inside between the evaporator coils that get cold and the hot condenser coils. It draws air from the back side over the evaporator coils to cool it taking out the humidity but then the damper sends that cool dry air down through the condenser coils back through the evaporator coils warming it back up. When you set the unit to AC this damper closes and then you have your traditional split system where the condenser coil air and the evaporator coil air are separated.

How did you establish the unit was sealed top to bottom on the inside of the case?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 Жыл бұрын
Seals between the evaporator pan and the rest of the case insides, with exception to the evaporator drain which drips onto the hot condenser coils, which evaporates and goes out the exhaust. As a result very little condensation comes out of the condenser drip tray/drain plug.

How often do you drain the unit if you leave it plugged?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 2 ай бұрын
On really humid days once a day. Very little condensation hits the tray since it is evaporated over the condenser coils and out the exhaust tube.

@@Bassguitarist1985 I just found out today that I do not have the plug (missing) on my unit so I am looking for a solution to plug it which made me look around on how long people keep it plug and I read around that there are people that had never had to drain theirs for 3 years.

@@kymberhsantaisabel3401 it is possible, very little is leftover as the heat from the condenser evaporate it out of the tray and out the exhaust. Unfortunately yes that is a side effect. Someone way more capable than me will likely come up with a 3D printed insert to basically attach in place of the existing plastic grill grate on there now

This mod doesn't do much since it will still take in air from around the rest of the chassis. I just use it as it came and it works fine for me.

The evaporator and condenser coils are sealed chambers within the chassis. It does make a big difference in efficiency

@@Bassguitarist1985 my BPACT14 is over-amping after about 4 minutes of cooling. Any ideas? Makes a slight worn bearing sound, but the heat blower spins freely.

@@TreeLuvBurdpu if it's cooling and blowing cold air for 4 minutes it may just be the overtemp sensor on the compressor. A worn bearing though is likely the cause if it is truly a bearing. Make a video and post it and I'll take a listen

@@Bassguitarist1985 i already ordered a new one an started disassembling my unit. It's definitely bearings. A BN-Link Smart Outlet outlet helped me identify the over amperage. Did you get a warrantee? My unit died 3 years to the month after i bought it. Additionally, on your two-hose upgrade, it looks like you may have covered the condenser fan inlet. Maybe I'm wrong, but i think you might need more in-flow opening area.

@@TreeLuvBurdpu Yes that is the inlet for the condenser inlet. Part of it is on the side of the machine and part of it is on the rear of the machine thus why the adapter covers the entire area. So far it's been running in my garage during my small engine repair stuff and no issues.
