As soon as you did the first split I thought "needs a bigger workspace" 😊 Looks like a decent unit though. I hope it works well for you. Cheers!

John Great video & well done putting that together- I have no need for wood here in Brisbane but if I ever needed a wood splitter I would definitely look at that (as a woman of an older age). I believe you are going to get a lot of use out of it, especially in Tassie. Yes do agree more work space area would be great. Looking forward to future reviews. Cheers Denise - Geebung Brisbane

I'm 50 and I feel the same way as I get older, I bought a 40 ton hydraulic splitter from Nubco in Mornington. It's slower but it splits some really big stuff too and can be moved to an upright position as well. I did look at a kinetic one but it was electric it didn't have the power I needed.

we have been using a hydraulic wood splitter for over 10 years ( still using our original splitter). We have a lot of very knotty wood so an axe or splitter is not an option It make short work of the knots, but you have to be careful cause they can explode so don't stand in line of fire. We split for 4 house holds and like you we keep at least a year ahead good luck looking to see it working

You won’t know yourself this winter, I was concerned to see the made in China, but it looks ok. I agree work space is important I looked at your movement and concerned re your back long term. Though you did say you wouldn’t be able to keep up that speed, good. Be careful you don’t get rid of one problem and create another back injury.

G'day. Thanks for the good vids. Any six month update on this splitter. I'm looking at this one and the Forrest West but as you say this one seems more solid and doesn't have a Chinese motor.
@homesteading
@homesteading 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite six months, but I did make another video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9NgqpWTusClYZ8.html&t. It is pretty good, split the seasons wood no problem. One does need to use the oil can quite frequently. To be accurate, while the motor is a Briggs, it is still made in China!

Well that machine is amazing. Honestly never seen one before. I use a hydraulic dual action splitter from a discount store in the states and do keep up with maintenance to keep it going well. Question, is their a safety mechanism or is their no stopping the ram once the handle it engaged?
@homesteading
@homesteading 3 жыл бұрын
I believe pulling the handle back will disengage it and allow it to retract. Both hands are required to operate it and no else should be close!
@ricardobaeza8064
@ricardobaeza8064 3 жыл бұрын
Might wanna try a mod that uses a foot operated pedal to engage the front lever. That way it frees up your left hand.
@homesteading
@homesteading 3 жыл бұрын
The sole purpose of the second lever is to ensure your left hand is out of harm's way! If a person wanted to "risk it" they could simply reverse the spring on this lever, making it permanently "live." But this would mean you could accidentally have your left hand "in the firing line!" If your hand was in the wrong place it would be crushed or severed...

Would be great to see a follow up after 20+ hours of use. That's when handles and stuff fail from cheap metals. Not saying it will fail, just that I'm keen on one but hate wasting money on cheap stuff that doesn't last

Jan, 2023 - Hi John, how's this log splitter holding up for you? Just about thinking we really, really need to get one now we've got tons of wood to split & considering this against the Forestwest kinetic 34-ton from Melbourne, who keep parts & give support. Be interested to know if you've had any Issues or if all remains sweet? HAPPY NEW YEAR!
@homesteading
@homesteading Жыл бұрын
Have had two seasons with it - haven't started this seasons firewood yet! The only problem so far was the soft part of the handle, which was replaced under warranty. So still happy! Judging from the pictures, the Forestwest splitter is a lighter build than the Black Diamond.
@homesteading
@homesteading Жыл бұрын
I should add that all kinetic splitters seem to have the same design problem - the end that you tow it from is the end that the wood pile naturally is created! This means you have to pull them backwards before being able to hitch them again...this not always an easy task!
@SmallWonda
@SmallWonda Жыл бұрын
@@homesteading That's what I'm thinking looks a bit fragile & my hubby, who will be using it won't want something that's a bit delicate. Good to know you didn't have problems with getting the replacement, which concerns me & I wonder if you need parts if they are easily available? I kinda think they should be, as I do see this seems to be sold all over - we've got a mountain to split. Interestingly, at the chainsaw shop they only had hydraulic ones... Thanks for the advice, do appreciate it - still love those videos!
@SmallWonda
@SmallWonda Жыл бұрын
@@homesteading Yes, I saw one video where the demonstrators completely blocked themselves in!! We've dropped the mountain in front of the sheds, so we'll have to be creative with the splitting - so appreciate the head's up. Have a good evening & happy gardening.
