This is my second "comparison series" for legendary 70'-80's music & artist. The Second is that Black Dog (Led Zeppelin) by original version Robert Plant vs Lou Gramm, a former Foreigner frontman.
Some rock fans don't know Lou Gramm sang 3 songs of Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven, Heartbreaker, and Black Dog in 1997. Black Dog and Heartbreaker are the best reversions by Lou. He looked like almost Robert Plant and voice also same as him at that time. I know no one can beat original Led Zeppelin songs but Lou Gramm stays closer to correct tuning, sang more wildly. The two legendary vocalists of all time are still alive and touring!
Who's your favorite Black Dog?

Lou sings and sang with his whole heart - always made me feel as if he was singing to me..and I don't say that about anyone else. I like Plant and Krauss.

The two singers have different vocal timbres. Both are great. (I'm a singer and Lou Gramm was my biggest influence.) Few guys could touch Lou in his heyday. Not just range, but intensity, power, passion, and control. Just ask Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bal8qcWXprLQeps.html Still hoping for the day he decides to teach vocals.

1. Robert recorded this song in the early seventies. Lou recorded this song in 1997. 2. They both have very bright and gorgeous voices, but completely different manner of singing. Lou mixes the voice is stronger than Robert. But by the way I never heard anyone else except Lou sang this song as closely as possible to the original. Because these two voices are very close in sound. If you don't know how to use your vocals properly, you just can't sing it! It is a talent from God and a lot of work. 3.As for your comparison of the place where they sing " A..ah, a.. ah....." there will be many opinions. And from the point of view of vocalists, and from the point of view of ordinary fans. I love their voices. 4.Listen to the song "Heartbreaker." I think Lou sang that song a lot better than Robert. In my opinion this song is the highest vocal aerobatics for both of them. 5. I still love Lou. )))

Lou kept his range for much longer than Plant. Didn't Plant have vocal surgery in the 70's to remove nodes on his larnyx? Smoking is a killer on the vocals and Plant smoked both cigs and weed. Gramm never smoked. Both are great, but I much prefer Lou's singing for its range and emotion.

Two of the greatest voices in Rock! And, no disrespect to either one of them, but IMO three other greats that still sound as good as their first album and their all over 70. Paul Rodgers,Sammy Hagar, & Glenn Hughes still rock the mic!

Both are fckn awesome but you can hear it is more effortless for Robert Plant here. However, as some others have pointed out, this is a moot point as Lou was way past his prime when he did this rendition.

Inspector711 Plant’s voice is not gone. He just stopped sceaming as he got older but started singing with much more finesse. It took some of us a minute to adjust because our ears were accustomed to that distinctive one of a kind wailing by Plant.

Robert had vocal cords surgery to remove nodules in 73/74. This sadly, I think, explains why his voice never was the same...

So I love Lou Gramm's voice, always have. But Plant to Me has been my vocal idol since 69' when I was 7, Zeppelin & Plant's voice just blew away all those years ago. Never heard a vocalist since, that had that specific tone, wail, air raid siren power & prowess & bravado, many imitators over the years, but they're not Plant.

Easily Plant. I love lou though. Robert damaged his voice in 73 or so. He regained most of his range and see it in 77 tour by early 80s either lost more range or because he was singing different style solo wasn't kept trained for those zeppelin songs

You don't know Lou Gramm? The lead singer of Foreigner. Feels like the First Time, Cold as Ice, Long, long way from home, Double Vision, Hot Blooded, Blue Morning Blue Day, Head Games, Dirty White Boy, Juke Box Hero, Waiting for a girl like you ,Urgent, I want to Know what Love Is, That was Yesterday, Say you Will, I don't want to live without you and solo Midnight Blue and Just Between You and Me. Lou is only a few years younger than Plant, but this is 1971 for Plant and 1997 for Lou.
