Great Western Railway 'Dukedog' in action on both passenger and freight trains during a number of photo-charters at the Llangollen Railway in March 2009. Video includes some footage taken from the footplate. Many thanks to the various charter organisers and railway staff that enabled these events to happen. Special thanks to Geoff Silcock and Russ Hillier for facilitating the repainting the locomotive into early British Railways black livery.

I think this engine also took the cab from 3425- you can see where a much larger boiler used to be fitted up against the cab- and the Bulldogs had straight frames, while the Dukes had curved frames making the side plates to the cab totally wrong for the straight frames. Anyway, a wonderful series of videos of this fine engine back in Wales.

My favorite outside frame gwr loco. I like her lines better than City of Truro for some reason.

Same. I think it's because the boiler is lower down/smaller and the smoke box is curved along the sides.

Even though she was "built" in 1938, I see her as 1899 vintage. Her boiler (built in 1899) was basically put onto the frames of another engine so it's basically like giving a torso a new set of legs.

Yep, that's right - a bit of a hybrid! The loco used the frames from 'Bulldog' class number 3425 (built in 1906) and the boiler/cab from 'Duke' class number 3282 which I think was built in 1887.

@@vincentberkan605 This is what the Bluebell Railway says "Class: Earl (later 90XX), but often known as "Dukedog" Wheels: 4-4-0, double frames Class Introduced: 1936 Rebuilt: Swindon, 1938 using frames from "Bulldog" No.3425 (built 1906) and boiler and cab from "Duke" class No.3282 (originally named 'Chepstow Castle' and built in 1899)". They say that this is from 'official GWR sources so I assume it is correct. Looks like 1899 it is!
